  1. is there any reason why shell32.dll exists twice in "supp" and "sp2" folder?

Sp2's shell32.dll is not modified, it is for 98lite Sleek and slipstreaming. Supp's shell32.dll is our old friend (from SP 1.6), it is modified for icons.

The same problem/annoyance as RC1 at the end of the installation it prompts for restart, then says it cant close the dos window, so I cancel, the dos window says something about a missing batch file (post?) and then prompts for restart again.

windows2k colours, have they been removed?

No boot logo, the only time I saw it was the first time when installed RC1 from CD, then I saw it just before windows reset itself, it wasn't 'animated' though.

OK, I hope I will fix "restart prompt" problem soon. Win2K colours and boot logo should not be installed because of this problem.

  2. 2.0 RC2

    What's new in RC2?

    - ADDED: 2 new hot-fixes (192425, 246817).

    - ADDED: All cosmetic enhancements of SP 1.6 such as Windows 2000 Desktop Icons. (Sorry, but they are not optional).

    - FIXED: Lots of bugs are fixed. (MaxCachedIcons typo bug, %DosNameHere" bug, Verinst.exe uninstallation bug, 256-color tray icons bug, Notepad patching on Sleek bug, Executing SP from different drive bug.)

    - REMOVED: General USB Mass Storage Device Drivers. (I recommend a much better generic drivers: http://rapidshare.de/files-en/516500/nusb20e.exe.html. My drivers doesn't support some devices and it has some bugs, we have a good alternative, so I removed it.)

  3. All, I've not released RC2 yet, I'm sorry about that. (I have some exams at school). I follow all your posts, and try to fix all these problems. Hopefully, RC2 will be very stable, and I hope I'll release it asap. Thanks for your patience.

  4. Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the delay or lack of responses. I've been very busy and then I had to get my password reset because I misplaced my information. ( I know....  Lame).  Anyway, I have those two files from Microsoft and I can sent them to you.  I originally emailed them to alper@wolke7.net. So I assume this email is correct?

Please let me know. I'll stay online for awhile while I'm at work.

    Thanks.  :)

Yes, it's correct. I got your emails.

    Thanks.

  5. Um, I'll let Gape answer your question.  I'm still not comfortable in mixing system files with different languages.  Gape might have a better response than what I have.

In general, mixing DLL files with different languages is not a problem. But, SP (and some hot-fixes) is not just DLL files. It has some registry settings, some directory locations and some other files (VXD/SYS etc.) that can cause problems on different languages.

  6. Ok, here it one of my strange problem; I couldn't install a SMC bluetool device driver on my 98SE. When I try to install the driver, it just prompted "Please install this software on Windows 98SE or later".

I called up the SMC tech support, they just told me that my 98SE is corrupted!  I told them that I can install other software(really, I can install other software..) but they just insisted my 98SE is corrupted.  :realmad:

    Hi,

Probably these drivers are checking a Windows 98 SE file such as KERNEL32.DLL which is updated by SP 2.0. So, can you learn that which file is checked by this SMC drivers?

Also can you try to install this drivers manually? Some drivers can be installed manually.

  7. Gape

When using RC1 in 98sleek I get an error from patchnps.exe that says,

ERROR: File is neither original nor patched!

Ran patchnp.exe by hand and patched sleek notepad ok. Did a binary compare

against an orig notepad patched with patchnp.exe and the only diff was

    the string shell32.dll and shell32.w98.

Thanks for the info. 2.0 RC1 has problems about patching. I'm working on it now. After solving these patching problems, I'll release 2.0 RC2.

  8. is there a listing where i can can see what each patch does exacly? I know for sure only patchnp.exe (which patches notepad) what does the rest patch?

PATCHE.EXE -> Explorer 256-color patcher. This will be removed in the RC2.

    PATCHNP.EXE -> Notepad.exe patcher.

    PATCHNPS.EXE -> Notepad.exe patcher for 98lite Sleek.

    PATCHRE.EXE -> Regedit.exe patcher.

All patchers are made by WinPatcher. But, because there is a lot of problem on the Explorer.exe's patcher (i.e. file-in-use problems), I have removed it for the RC2.

RC2 is ready, but I have not solved the problems about Windows 2000 desktop icons optional feature. So, probably I will return the old method (1.6.2) for installing desktop icons on the RC2.

  9. Gape, since you no longer mention the Q265528 vnetbios.vxd patch on your

Needed Updates list page I wonder if you have this patch.  I've tried at

least 3 times requesting the Q265528 hotfix from Microsoft and MS hasn't

given me the patch with their responses.

If you have it, can you send me Q265528 patch?

I don't have it. Different Microsoft employers said that this patch is only for 98 GOLD (FE). It isn't for 98 SE.

  10. I think you'll have to re-install Win98 jaberwock.  The vmm32.vxd file gets modified during Win98 setup (not in Unofficial Win98se SP 2.0 setup) so that the vmm32.vxd file can specifically work under your computer.

The vmm.vxd file is far different than the vmm32.vxd file.  If the vmm32.vxd file is missing or damaged you'll have to fix it only by re-installing Windows.

MDGX, I've found the disk where I stored the Q192425 win98 patch and Q290831 winme patch.  let me know if you need the patches.  these will be the last ones I give to you.

You're right. VMM.VXD is the loader part of the VMM32.VXD. SP has a special installation method for it (RPLCLDR.EXE). But probably it's not related with jaberwock's problem.

I sent Q192425 patch to MDGx.

  11. VMM32.VXD problem is interesting. I'll fix it, if it is a bug. Clean install on a real machine or on VMWare/VirtualPC? Can you write the exact error message?

You should try that: In the SP's setup EXE, there is a SP2.CAB file, and it has VMM32.VXD. Extract it, and copy it as VMM.VXD into your installation (SYSTEM\VMM32 directory).

  12. Yes Gape.  The 867282 IE 5.5 SP2 update has an updated browseui.dll file, however, this update normally installs under WinME only because IE 5.5 SP2 is now supported only under WinME.  You can 'workaround' this problem by extracting all the files from the IE 5.5 SP2 867282 patch to a temp folder and run the command "ieupdate.exe Q867282" from that temp folder and reboot the machine to use the updated files.  Current and future IE 5.5 SP2 security patches will normally install under WinME only.

A follow up on my last comment.  Replacing the IE6 SP1 versions of the browseui.dll & browselc.dll files with the IE 5.5 SP2 versions and the Vgx.dll 833989 IE6 SP1 security patch will REFUSE TO INSTALL!!!  It will tell you that the patch requires IE6 SP1 to be installed, even if you already have IE6 SP1 installed.  This is one of the IE updates that DO check to see if you are really using the IE6 SP1 versions of the browseui.dll & browselc.dll files and not older versions.  BUMMER!!!!

So, if anyone strongly wants to replace these two files on a IE 6.0 installed system, he/she should use this updated browseui.dll from 867282 IE 5.5 SP2 update. Of course he/she can use an INF file for replacing, or she/he can replace these files on the real DOS mode.

  13. The power management interface offers only to turn off the monitor.

Before running the SP2.0 I had:

    -monitor

    -hard drive

    -system stand by

+all my custom profiles vanished...

    English or French Windows? :P

Firstly, you should install proper version of the SP. I highly recommend a freshly installed Windows 98 SE.

Secondly, make sure that all your hardware drivers are installed and latest versions. Especially your mainboard related drivers should be installed (Intel INF, or VIA 4-in-1 etc.).

  14. After I upgraded with SP2.0 Rc_french, I have two Volume icon in the taskbar.

I think it's because I installed a french version while I had to instal an english version.

(My windows version is english but it was set up with a french charcter set, so I thought I had to instal SP2.0RC_french.)

Is there a simple method to have one little loudspeaker again?

If your Windows' version is English, your charset isn't important. You should install English version of the SP.
