  1. I know that vxd fix is myth.

And do you have a 320798 hotfix ?

    HSI,

I read the link, thank you. According to this link, "missing vxd files" is NOT a bug. They are already in the VMM32.VXD. I totally agree.

From the link: "M$ says that extracting system files that are rolled into VMM32.VXD will not increase system performance..." I don't agree with M$, sorry. Extracting some VXD files into Windows\System\VMM32 directory improves performance. I made some tests on my system with WinTune and PCPlayer 3D Benchmark, and these benchmark applications say my performance increased approximately %5 after VXD extracting. I know some other people reports similar results.

VXD-Fix contains 7 files. Service Pack contains updated versions of 4 of them. So, I already have to install these 4 files into Windows\System\VMM32.

I don't have 320798, sorry. Perhaps, you can request it from M$.

  2. shuKaru,

As I said, Windows 2000 desktop icons and Windows 2000 color scheme features will be optional. 2.0 BETA 2 contains a new boot logo as optional feature.

    All,

I have just got 16 new hot-fixes, so I think perhaps there will be a Release Candidate (RC) before FINAL. Sorry about this but we must be sure about these new hot-fixes' compatibility.

  3. Is it possible with new 98 SE SP to slipstream all updates into original Windows 98 SE source CD?

Only hot-fixes (Main Update) are slipstreamable. It is different from Windows XP's slipstream method.

Firstly, you must copy your Windows 98 SE Source CD's WIN98 directory into hard drive (like D:\WIN98). After that, you must only extract SP2.CAB into D:\WIN98. Windows Setup will use these newer fixed files during installation.

Note: You can see setup file's (SESP20B2.EXE) contents with Winzip, Winrar or PowerArchiver (Right click - Open with Winzip). SP2.CAB is in the setup file.

  4. I think, most of these settings don't seem suitable for general usage. Most useful setting is EMMExclude=A000-FFFF, maybe it helps to solve some problems. But IMHO, PageBuffers (which works with only permanent swap file) and VGAMonoText settings should be useless.

EMMExclude=A000-FFFF: To prevent Windows from searching the Upper Memory Area (UMA) for unused memory (RAM) upon startup. Safer if you use any 3rd party memory managers (QEMM, NetRoom, 386MAX etc), or any real MS-DOS mode devices/drivers/TSRs in CONFIG.SYS/AUTOEXEC.BAT.

PageBuffers: To increase the 4 KB page buffers number (in KiloBytes) for storing asynchronous read/write pages, and thus boost Windows fixed disk performance. Works ONLY if using 32-bit disk access (FBDA) AND a permanent swap file. Default value is 4. Maximum allowed is 32.

VGAMonoText: To allow Windows to use the B000-B7FF Upper Memory Area (UMA) if not used by other hardware devices (monochrome video adapters) or graphics/video (VGA/SVGA/XVGA) applications. Default value is ON. If a hardware device/peripheral or an upper/extended/expanded memory manager using this memory range is installed, this area is NOT available to Windows.

LocalLoadHigh: To increase the amount of conventional (low) DOS memory (RAM) available to each DOS session/box to maximum. Default value is 0.

  5. I think, the installation process has some problems, I'm working on it now.

2.0 will not contain any Notepad replacement. But if I can find a good patching program, I will add my enhanced Notepad in the 2.0.

If I use patching technology, it will don't affect your existing Notepad replacement, too. In other words, you don't have to install Metapad, after installing the SP.

  6. 1. While installing it, it asked me to shutdown and I said no. It continued installing stuff. I suspect if I answered Yes, it might not have installed everything properly. The installation is scary overall, with windows shrinkng and maximizing randomly!

    2. It is missing these hotfixes / updates, please add them in your next release:

    ...

    3. doshere.zip (Command Prompt Here) and ttfext.zip (TrueType Font Extension) should be included :)

    5. You should include WinPatcher.exe...

    Thanks for great feedback! :thumbup

You're right about "reboot" problem. I'm working on it.

This update is already in the SP. But you should install IE 6.0 before installing the SP.

I hope, "Dos Here" will be in the final.

    About VXD Fix, SP installs 5 of them (vcomm.vxd, configmg.vxd, vmouse.vxd, ntkern.vxd, ios.vxd), because they're updated.

  7. great work! just a suggestion doesnt windows 98 have a ram probably leaking and things like that windows xp dont really have ram problem can you add like a ram release program to make 98 se more stable? just a thought

Unfortunately, Windows 98's memory management is not good. Some updates in the service pack fixes some memory leakage problems, but this is not enough. RAM release programs also don't solve this problem.

I recommend that you should use well-written mature programs, avoid to use any beta/alpha/new programs.

  8. Version 2.0 BETA 2 is ready. :thumbup

Sorry, but some features still don't exist:

    - General USB MSD support (Need help: Post).

    - Windows 2000 Desktop Icons, 256-Color Tray Icons, Better Notepad (Need help: Post).

    - Uninstallation.

This BETA is only for TESTING.

    Download BETA 2

The next release will be probably FINAL.

    Please, write ANY comment (If it even works properly, write it), I need your support. :}

  9. I'm looking for a patch program.

Windows 2000 Desktop Icons, 256-Color Tray Icons and Better Notepad features will be implemented by patching in the 2.0. This will improve the service pack, and solve some previous problems. All these features will be optional. ;)

I just found a patch program which is called "binpatch" by Kay Hayen. It contains all needed features, and it's free for non-commercial use.

However, when I run the patch on DOS, it shows an annoying license message and waits for pressing a key.

Does anyone know that how can eliminate this problem? Or do you know any good "silent" DOS or Win32 patching program?
