I'd be curious to know what anybody could hate about Vista at this point. Unless they're Metro/Win8 fans and can't stand Aero Glass and 3D elements, but then their objections would apply to Win7 too. --JorgeA

IPB Update July 2013 (to version 3.4.5) - BUGS Only
JorgeA replied to xper's topic in Site & Forum Issues
Me, too! I played with the filter as you suggested. By selecting both "items I participated in" and "just items I follow," it seems to do the trick. Thanks! Another way I discovered was to click on the notifications bell that sits between the user name and "sign out" at the top of the page, then click on "view all notifications." The resulting page (in "My control panel --> Settings --> My notifications") seems to give the list of posts for which notifications would normally be getting e-mailed. One could bookmark that page. Or if I go there directly enough times, then it'll start showing up in the list of most popular sites when I open a new browser tab. In fact that's how I get to MSFN most of the time now when not simply responding to an e-mail notification: I use the Taskbar jumplist or open a new tab and click on the MSFN thumbnail. If e-mail notifications never got fixed, a workaround of sorts would then be to set up a reminder in Outlook to check every so often in "View new content" or "My notifications." There are some forums where I forget to visit for literally months at a time. I did say life had a lot of distractions but I wouldn't want MSFN to suffer that same fate. --JorgeA -
Here's an interesting analysis that may go some way in explaining the difficulties of Windows 8: Don’t Prioritize Efficiency Over Expectations No doubt we can think of a variety of cases where this applies to Win8, Metro apps, and now Win10. The only observation I would add with respect to Win8 is that, using the cited formula IC = P + M, when using the Search function the Metro Start Screen managed to increase M without even decreasing P, since in the Vista and 7 Start Menus the search bar has the focus by default. No efficiency was gained by not giving the user a visually evident way to perform a search, but it sure caused confusion. --JorgeA

Thanks for testing, xper. The test e-mail has not (yet) arrived. --JorgeA -
Symantec issued a notice about their products' compatibility with Windows 10, and a discussion ensued. One customer asked about GWX: The correct answer, of course, is "both." --JorgeA

If you haven't changed anything at your end and I haven't changed anything at my end, what else could be causing this change in the outcome (no e-mail notifications)? Is there any way for you to determine whether the notifications are being sent out to me? --JorgeA -
And speaking of this stuff, here's Dedoimedo's take on the whole thing: How to remove the Windows 10 GWX upgrade nonsense Check out the "Final step" in the process (NSFW). --JorgeA

Here is another sneaky Windows Update that popped up on my Windows 7 updates list this morning: KB3050265: It's outrageous that Microsoft is mixing Windows 10 modifications with (supposedly) real fixes for actual problems. And out-of-band, at that. --JorgeA

Thanks, bphlpt. I see what you mean about the filter preferences. I wasn't aware of this function, but it could be really useful. Still, though, it means having to actively remember to go in and look; see my reply to Trip above. --JorgeA -

Sometimes I'm participating in multiple threads at once and I can't remember the names of all of them, so getting those e-mail notifications is extremely helpful in staying current with those topics. It's more efficient (faster) than scanning the whole board, plus I may not remember where I have or haven't posted recently. This is indeed the way I come into MSFN most often. There are times when I do visit just to see what's new, but I'd estimate that 80 90% of the time I come in it's in response to an e-mail notification telling me that someone on a topic I'm following has posted a reply here. There's a lot of stuff going on out there in life and many different things vying for one's attention (spouse, work, family, TV, ...), so it helps a lot to get those notices. --JorgeA -
Follow-up on the above question: I went back to the Neowin piece, and there's been some discussion in the comments section regarding that exact issue -- how they got that Windows Classic window, window controls, and titlebar to show up in Windows 10. Here's what people are saying: Still, opinions as to what's going on there with that Word 95 window are not unanimous: FWIW, apparently it IS possible to do custom window treatments (so to speak ) in Win10. EMET on my TP installation looks like Windows 7 Basic. --JorgeA

No change in the situation: e-mail notifications are still not coming in. --JorgeA -
they didn't they ran word 95 on winblows 10 and shot themself in foot showing that classic shell is there yet they deny it all the time since vista Huh, that's interesting. At first I thought you were saying that the "Windows Classic" look of that Word 95 window was hardcoded into Word 95, but now it sounds like you believe that Windows Classic DOES still survive somewhere in Windows 10. Did I read you right? BTW, the "problem" with the Vista icons is (of course) that they're 3D, which violates the new flat anti-esthetic. And yes, it IS sad that such a thing is actually newsworthy. --JorgeA

Gabe Aul teases Windows 10 build 10136, shows off a couple new icons Uhh, how did they get the Word 95 window to look like Windows Classic theme? (Pretty neat actually, I'd take even that over the colorless Metro/Modern/Universal look.) --JorgeA

Comment in another website with respect to the games that Microsoft is replacing in Windows 10: Anybody here tried those games and seen ads? My dual-boot laptop's currently running Windows 7 as it has some real work to do this week... --JorgeA

Whoa, you're right! --JorgeA

But the flood of bad news continues: Here's what's no longer available when upgrading to Windows 10 --JorgeA

One tiny bit of good news: Windows 10 Build 10130 allows you to run multiple instances of calculator app, more apps to follow --JorgeA

Very cool!! Can you rig the tool so that, as part of the process of uninstalling the update, it also sends a short rejection e-mail to Gabe Aul, Terry Myerson, and Satya Nadella? Just kidding about that. This is nice. Anybody here participating in Neowin, to give it a mention there? --JorgeA

What is it about Spartan that you find the tiniest bit interesting?
JorgeA replied to NoelC's topic in Windows 10
Fascinating, NoelC -- thanks! While not definitive of course, the data is strongly suggestive. As a scientist would say, it calls for "further research." Maybe you can post these and other results on the Windows Insiders forum to see what happens. --JorgeA -
@jbm: Heh, I wonder if Microsoft might have pulled that nagware update, possibly due to protests. The reason that idea came up is that I just booted my Win10 test laptop into Windows 7 (which has been there all along) for the first time since before May's Patch Tuesday, and I have the full complement of this month's updates (including the optional ones) except for the nagware update. Same as what you saw. And it's not listed in my hidden updates, either. Hmmm, I guess only time will tell. Maybe this one takes a while to filter through somehow. --JorgeA

Here's some that usually take a long time to finish loading (longer than others, anyway) for me: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/ushome/index.html http://arstechnica.com/ http://www.zdnet.com/ Not an exhaustive list, of course. News sites and entertainment sites will probably also be good candidates for testing. --JorgeA -

Out of curiosity, has anybody published benchmark test results comparing, for example, how long it takes to load a variety of web pages in Edge vs. IE? --JorgeA
