  1. What I'm looking for is an explanation of certain system files... namely those which contain system Icons. What I need is a place to lookup which icon is for which file type. For example: The Icon for My Computer might be icon #101 in Explorer.exe. The Icon for .TXT files might be icon #102 in Shell32.dll. Ect. Any place I can find this info?
  2. Not me. I've started using the .CAB hotfixes from various sites (including the Ryan Pack) and everything seems to work just fine. You might try starting over the way I do it: I call it the Lego approach. 1. Create multiple directories for the following. ( A ) Windows files. [This is where you copy all files from your original Windows XP CD.] ( B ) Hotfixes. [This is where your .CAB files for integrating go.] ( C ) Drivers. [if you use the simplified Drivers from CD method, put all driver directories here] ( D ) Installation programs. [i currently use WPI for installing programs. This is where my WPI setup goes.] ( E ) Copy Over. [This is where my modified OEM and I386 folders go. The OEM folder gets copied over BEFORE Nlite, and the I386 folder gets copied over AFTER Nlite.] Quick note about the Copy Over folder. In the OEM directory you place files which must be copied to your harddrive during install. Examples include your Wallpapers, Themes, ect. The I386 directory holds your custom system files: WINNT.SIF, custom billboard and Logon DLLs, ect. Once your directories are created and setup, you're ready to begin experimenting without losing the stuff that you know works. Simply create a working directory like C:\XPCD Then, start COPYING over the files. First, you copy over the contents of Windows Files. Then, Drivers and then Installation Files. Now copy over your modified OEM directory and tell it to overwrite files. Now run NLite on your XPCD directory, making whatever tweaks and so forth that you want. (This is the reason I call it experimenting) Knock yourself out with removing components and tweaking settings. When it gets to the Hotfixes portion, just point NLite to your Hotfixes directory and select every .CAB file there. When NLite gets to the part to make and ISO file, WAIT! Leave that screen up and copy over your modified I386 directory, telling it to overwrite files. Once that's finished copying you can have NLite create your ISO file. Done! Now just run a program like VMware or Microsoft Virtual Machine to test the ISO. If it doesn't work, you need only empty your XPCD directory and copy files back over like your did before and you're ready to play with it again.
  3. The difference between Linux and Windows XP is the same as The difference between creating webpages in Notepad and using Frontpage. Windows/Frontpage is very user-friendly and allows someone to just jump right in and go to work. Linux/Notepad is not. Period. You must actually take the time to learn the ins and outs of what you're working with to be able to accomplish anything. Granted, Linux distros are really moving towards making Ma and Pa Kettle able to use them, but at it's heart the Linux operating system is still for geeks. Because of those two differences, MOST software developers push for the n00b-friendly route since it means a higher customer base. The majority of games and high-end software suites are still Windows only. Thus, if you're looking for a better selection of available software, and/or have no desire to take the time to learn the HOWS of how your system works, go for Windows. If you're not the gamer type and are interested in taking more control of your system, go Linux.
  4. Let's see... Half-life 2 Oblivion WoW
  5. ^^ That's actually what I started with... but it's **** time-intensive. Not to mention that I don't fully understand what some of the icons are for. If I could find a listing which specified like: Shell32.dll incon #124 = bitmap icon. That would help immensely.
  6. Yea, yea... I know you can download third party programs to change icons and styles... but I like to keep a minimalistic system: the less programs running the better. What I'm looking for is a place to download pre-packaged shell32.dll and explorer.exe files. NOT icon packages and the like requiring other software. Any suggestions?
  7. I copied my Windows XP Professional (SP2) cd to my XPCD directory. Then, I followed the instructions for creating a setupORG.exe file from the original setup.exe and then copied the new setup.ex_ file to my I386 directory. I then created my \Drivers directory with all necessary files. I used NLite to make the bootable DvD. During install, I keep getting file missing errors like CLOCK.AVI. Anyone else have this problem?
  8. Is there a way to save the changes you make in About:Config? I'd like to not have to change them manually every time I use my silent isntaller. Thanks much.
  9. Got it. Just needed to right-click/save-as. Thanks folks.
  10. Where do I get the XPI files?? When I click the extension at mozilla.com it just installs directly.
  11. I'm using SOF and having no issues making a silent installer for Firefox. However, it is NOT keeping my extensions like Adblock and so forth. I'm checking the boxes to do it, and I've even tried copying my entire Firefox contents to the Profile directory. No luck. Any suggestions here??
  12. Does this program make direct changes to the Shell32.dll and Explorer.exe files? Or does it create its own files and just change the system to point to the new ones? Before I install it, I'd like to know the extent of what it will do to my system. Thanks.
  13. Yes, that's one of the lines I have in my file already. Thus the note about autopartitioning and formatting.
  14. I created my (almost) perfect Unattended DvD- Custom icons, themes, tweaks, everything. The WINNT.SIF file is set to autopartition and format so all I have to do is boot to the DvD, and all the work is done for me. The only problem is... sometimes it makes the partition become DRIVE E:, instead of DRIVE C:. The DvD is always DRIVE D: like it's supposed to be, but the harddrive seems to be completely random. It's like at some point during the initial setup it notices that there's an old C:... and instead of wiping it before repartitioning, it makes a new partition and THEN begins the format/install process. Any suggestions?
  15. Ok, in my Unattended install the Winamp program is installing almost perfectly. It's installing my registration and everything. The only thing it's NOT doing is associating all music files to utilize Winamp by default. Any suggestions? Here's the INI file minus registration info: [sETUP] Xregaud=1 Xregvid=0 Xregpls=1 Xagent=0 Xlibrary=0 Xmlibrary=0 Xshout=0 Xpredixis=0 Xintex=0 Xhotkey=0 Xjump=0 Xtray=0 Xmodernskin=1 Xaudio=1 Xwma=1 Xmid=1 Xmod=1 Xogg=1 Xaac=1 Xaacplus=1 Xmp3enc=1 Xmp4=1 Xwmaenc=1 Xcdplay=1 Xsonic=1 Xcddb=1 Xwav=1 Xvideo=0 Xnsv=0 Xavi=0 Xvisual=0 Xtinyfull=0 Xavs=0 Xmilkdrop=0 Xextra=0 Xsignal=0 Xwritewave=0 Xdcout=0 Xline=0 Xregopt=0 Xdircont=0 Xtypecont=0 Xnetscape=0 Xaudiocd=0 Xname=Me Xkey=Big Number XDesktop=0 XStartmenu=0 XINET=0
  16. For my Unattended DvD I have been able to replace the icons in shell32.dll and explorer.exe. Are there any other system files with Icons I can replace?

  18. Well, Civilization 4 is out and I'm loving it. I've handed AOE3 down to a friend (an option which came only slightly higher than glueing it to my AOL wall). This game kicks much a**. The graphics are awesome, the AI is much improved over the other games, and the sheer number of different strategies which can be utilized are amazing. Thus far, my favorite leader to play is Napoleon.
  19. Ok, I have a program that installs by right-clicking the .INF file and choosing Install. Is there any way to perform this function during an Unattended setup? IE: What code do I put in my setup process? I use WPI.

  21. Actually, I looked into that program. However, I don't understand it. It gives Windows a new look... granted. But is there any way to change the look? IE: have it apply different themes that I can mesh with an unattended install?
  22. Ok, I'm wondering if anyone knows a website that has hacked system files (shell32.dll, explorer.exe, ect) with new icons, cursors, ect. already implemented? One source is www.crystalxp.net I'm looking for more. Thanks.
  23. The file shows Created by Nlite... yet I haven't seen the settings to change in Nlite that makes the Autopartition and repartition statements. Did you add those manually?
  24. Is Driver Signing turned off? Windows may have gone with the "closest driver" because it was signed.
  25. Oblivion. Period. I just picked up AOE3 for the hell of it. Granted, I'm enjoying it like I did the others... but once Oblivion gets here the National Guard is gonna have to come find my a**.
