  1. Doesn't sound like it, but you never know. Do you have another video card that you can substitute for your current one to test to see if video _is_ the problem? (or, remove video card and put it into _another_ machine, maybe) In either case: Memtest86, for testing memory. Also, this, further down the page.
  2. No. OEMINFO.INI is read as plaintext.
  3. gpedit.msc User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components --> Inclusion list for low file types: Enabled Specify .exe Click OK (reboot?)
  4. like, omgwtfbbq!?!????????????? Transmeta > A64 + gentoo > *
  5. Copy the DOTNETFX directory from the SP2 update disc over to your Windows XP installation CD, and then download the (newer?) copy of NDPSP.EXE from Microsoft and replace it in that folder. From there, run DOTNETFX.EXE (base), then NDPSP.EXE (SP1 update), with the correct unattend switches and stuff. I think the second one uses /Q. I'm pretty sure that the button on the Autorun screen works. I don't trust the .NET 2.0 beta yet.
  6. I have no comment on the actual cards developed by the two companies in question. I use ATI, since that's what IBM decided to put in as the flavor of the month™ in their machines or something. Just a note: nVidia > ATI in terms of Linux (binary) driver support.
  7. Okay. I just did a little bit of researching. Seems that FAT32 --> NTFS fragments the MFT, according to things from multiple sources. [link] Bleh. Guess that's a problem. Maybe I'll try Captive NTFS to write to disk and live with the slow speeds, unless anyone else has more insight into this....
  8. And what of those people, those of us on mobile solutions, unable to buy a bigger drive? ServicePackFiles should be safe to delete. This KB article at Microsoft is intended for Windows 2000, but it should still apply in your case. I don't recall if the SoftwareDistribution folder is entirely safe to delete without adverse side-effects. Just delete the "downloads" folder within SoftwareDistribution, and you should free up some space.
  9. Because I'm stubborn like that The Gentoo LiveCD is small enough that I can shove it onto an 8cm CD. The problem with the WinPE method, as far as I can see, is that I wouldn't have access to Bash and tar, which I need. Plus, I don't have access to a copy of Microsoft's Windows PE.... Does anyone else have any insight into the whole NTFS vs. converted-NTFS thing?
  10. This? TweakUI can do it too, if you mean, show-windows-version on desktop.
  11. Okay. This may sound really, really stupid, but~ I've been thinking about backing up my Win32 installation. Usually, in Gentoo, I can just tar (think, GNU's default solution to ZIP/RAR/whatever) up the entire 2-3GB system, and really pack it down. When I restore, I just boot from a LiveCD, un-tar the archive, boom, system restored. So, I thought, perhaps I could do this for Windows, since I can R/O access the NTFS partition from Gentoo? Mount the partition, tar the files, and the archive resides on the Linux side. So, LiveCD + tar.bz2'd system --> untar == yay! The problem is, I can't write to NTFS partitions from the Linux side, only FAT16/32. I'd have to un-tar the archive to the partition, boot from the partition (using GRUB, so no problems regarding the boot loader) and convert it from there. So. That leads to my question - is there any difference at all between a converted FAT --> NTFS partition and an original-created-by-win32-NTFS partition? I can't think of any, but I read somewhere that "converted is slower" or some rubbish like that.....
  12. Registry keys can all go. aim.exe recreates the keys when you run them and they aren't there. Download AIM 5.2 from somewhere (like oldversion.com) and start from there. You can start with throwing aimres.dll in ResHacker and deleting images that you don't need (talk, buddy icons, etc.) to save space. I don't remember exactly, but there is a file in the AIM95 directory (admin.ocm?) editable with notepad.exe that loads up extra modules/junk like talk/file transfer. Remove those strings and delete the corresponding file in the directory. Play around with it. I did this a while ago and cut down my install to less than 2.5 MB or so.
  13. nLite is your friend. I don't remember my old installation being ~3GB. Seems a bit excessive. Did you do XP --> +SP2 patch, or XP+SP2 integrated installation?
  14. Wrong. It's compatible and works perfectly. Even older pre-SP2 versions that I have which are archived work perfectly. The problem isn't with the ATI driver. The latest version for the actual driver is 6.xx or something, I don't recall from the IBM site. grampasso: Go complain to Acer's technical support about it or see if they have newer versions of the driver. Look, I even did the work that you could've done by going to Acer's site. [link].
  15. Codec packs are bad for you. I don't see the advantages to WMP10 > WMP9. Unless you really want to use the online music stores with DRM'd content at low quality and a bloated player. Better programs for ripping CDs, too. Only good thing that I see about WMP10 is that they've included an updated version of Fraunhofer's professional MP3 encoder.
  16. Ad-Aware Personal. Download, update the definitions, scan. You might want to boot into Safe Mode and also disable System Restore before scanning and removing. Note: if you run HijackThis, do NOT just randomly delete files that appear in the results! There was a user on another forum who did so and botched their entire Windows installation! And if you're using IE, drop it and get Firefox so the chances of this happening again are slim to none, unless you pick apart a file locally.
  17. Supposed 3/512. I'm lucky if I get half that sometimes. **** Comcast. I've heard that NTT-East/NTT-West back home offer 100 Mbit lines for around the same amount that I pay for in USD per month. And ~50 Mbit lines for half what I pay. !?!?
  18. Japanese >>/ Chinese >>/ New Yorker English. Heh. なに!?
  19. Given a choice of only the listed options, WinDVD. I don't like Ahead/Nero very much. Bloated pig, everything but the kitchen sink is included. That's even if you install only the first package. All I want is a burner, damnit. Though, I don't like either of the choices listed. Try Media Player Classic. Much, much, much smaller than either of the choices. And a lot better and versatile.
  20. Saw this on Slashdot a while ago. I don't see how it can "prevents to run OSs like Linux" though. I don't think this will work very well. Most people in 3rd world countries will just continue to pirate - why pay $36USD for a limited copy when someone could have a fully functioning (pirated) copy for a fraction of that? /self does not condone piracy
  21. Holy crap. I just did a version check on the download (linked above) and the version of NDPSP.exe on the Service Pack 2 CD. All the information looks the same, only differences that I can see are the date of the digital signature, build date, size of the file. Wonder why Microsoft released it on the CD before on their download site? @jcarle: perhaps, grab a SP2 CD and copy the DOTNETFX folder?
