  1. I tried to check Motherboard Gigabyte ga-P35-DQ6 (ICH9 chipset). Unfortunately it died  during testing. It went into an endless recurring restarting loop, like xrayer had experienced with the Gigabyte GA-P43-ES3G (Post 189) - random?. The graphics card was a Nvidia 7900GS and the CPU an Intel Celeron 430. I rewrote xrayers driver (inf files) for ICH10 to ICH 9. Also I wanted to test the original inf files for 2K/XP. I changed the signature "WINDOWS NT" to "CHICAGO".

What worked until the mobo died:

The Win ME USB 2.0 driver

Graphics card - driver 82.69 with added 7900GS

    Lan Realtek 8169 PCI card

    What didn't:

    - ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Ports (Device Manager - yellow exclamation marks) and hence LAN onboard Realtek. I'm not sure about the three exclamation marks, where they were. Device status message was something like two PCI.VXD bustypes existing (Code 2).

    - Serial ATA Storage Controllers and Gigabyte SATA2 controller (10 devices).

Primary and Secondary IDE controller (single fifo) had yellow exclamation marks.

There isn't an option in BIOS to set compatible (four devices). I set them all to

    IDE mode.

The PATA HDD was switched in the DOS compatibility mode, as was expected.

(- Onboard sound set to disabled => no driver)

Before I could restore the registry to get rid of the DOS compatibility mode, the board died.

    OS Win ME :hello:

  2. Conclusions:

Use Kexstubs definition for GetAdaptersAddresses instead of replacing iphlpapi.dll

Use uxtheme.dll from win2000-uxthemedll.zip instead of KernelEx version

    Hello jumper,

if I paste this uxtheme.dll in opera directory ( Opera 12.10 build 1652 portable or USB version ) then it starts without error message and the firewall asks for permission, but Opera doesn't open. It only runs in the background. Replacing uxtheme.dll in the KernelEX folder doesn't effect.

There is an improvement for Opera 12.5 builds 1577 and 1581 (GetAdaptersAddresses=t5). These versions now open, but the internal communication error remains. Also see the Kext-topic.

  3. In response to the above poster: yes, this is a small form factor Dell.

I successfully installed Windows ME today on the Dell Optiplex GX270.

Okay, got Windows ME installed after F-Disking the hard drive and reformatting. I found the drivers for "Intel 82865g graphics card" but they just caused the computer to hang. I couldn't get Windows to boot any longer.

The file/drivers I used where from here:

    http://downloadcente...oller+Hub+(GMCH)&OSFullname=Windows+Me*〈=eng

    specifically the file "WIN9X1361.ZIP"

    it didn't work.

Well, it was nice to try and get this thing to work. But it's probably cheaper to just buy a copy of Windows 2000 professional. It's better than XP (IMO) and  I might not have to spend money hunting for compatible graphics cards, sound cards, drivers, etc. etc.

So I may just settle for Windows 2000 professional. :-(

The "onboard IDE operate mode" must set to compatible in BIOS, because ME only supports four IDE devices (Enhanced Mode = six devices). Hyperthreading (HT) (CPU feature) can cause a problem, too. ME doesn't support HT. Make sure, that HT is disabled in BIOS. And check the BIOS ACPI/APIC settings. Something like "ACPI 2.0" must be disabled.

  4. Hallo Thunderbolt 2864,

assuming the X1250 (RS600) is a X700, I added the X1250 graphics to the inf file of  ATI Catalyst Display Driver (Windows 98/Me) Version: 6.2 (02/09/2006).

If you like you can test it for your own risk. Try a manual installation or replace the original "C8 inf" with the new one. I can't test it.

    X1250.zip

  5. Just installed the portable version of vlc media player 2.0.4 on windows 98 se kernelex 4.5.2 but there are no words in the menu at the top

Only lines and blanks.  I experienced this a;ready with other versions of vlc.

What is your default menu font? Try to change it (Tahoma Western). Do you have RP installed?

  6. Anyone got Process Explorer >9.xx to work on plain 98SE? I tried 10.20, 11.00, 11.11, 11.13, 11.21, 11.33, maybe some others, none work.

The initial post in "Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE" thread says v11.11 is the latest to work. The changelog mentions for v11.13: "Fixes compatibility with Windows 9x and NT4". The CHM file for various v11.xx says 9x is supported. Yet, no go.

Some newer 11.xx do nothing, some show the EULA dialog and afterwards a tray icon + taskbar button and nothing further happens, or the computer gets stuck(/ish).

Did you try "Process Viewer" or "WinTop" (Win95 Kernel PowerToys)? I've no problems on ME. The Process Explorer works with KernelEX up to 11.33 and without KEX up to version 11.11 for me.

  7. ^^ Thanks for the link, I clicked on it but I can't find any drivers that is compatible with Windows 98, most of them are for XP. Don't know which version of 6.2 I tried, but I guess that doesn't really matter because it doesn't support 98. However, I tried this driver and it works but it has major issues:

    http://limemaster92....om/2/vbe9x-iso/

The driver can be very slow when trying to scroll down a page, if you know what I mean, its like using the generic VGA adapter driver when no driver is installed

When a MSDOS window opens, it causes your monitor to lose signal which is very annoying

Guess I better give up looking for drivers, I guess running Windows 98 on VirtualBox is the wisest idea at the moment, though I prefer to run it natively on my old PC but due to lack of drivers it is very difficult.

All about the Universal VESA/VBE Video Display Driver VBEMP 9x here.

Installation note 0: Current driver unsolved problems:

Slow driver operation when user scroll, move or resize a window.

Locking and garbage problems when entering DOS WDM or console session.

Garbage problems when displaying text with some screen fonts.

I guess you have one of these boards: GA-MA69GM-S2H or GA-MA69G-S3H. Both have a PCI-E slot. Probably it's the only solution, to run 98 natively, to insert a graphics card with 9x driver support. The ATI driver 6.2 supports up to X8xx series. Nvidia: The official drivers support up to NV6xxx series. But note the shutdown issue with drivers Nvidia 81.85 and higher and the problems with graphics cards, which have more than 256MB. Unofficial NV drivers support up to NV7xxx.

  8. µTorrent:

Uninstalling of the Fritz Firewall (SARAH.DLL) doesn't work and the crash dump file is still empty.

    Opera (comp. mode Win 2000):

Opera 12.5 build 1513 is the latest version that works for me, of course without plugins.

If I add "[iPHLPAPI.DLL]GetAdaptersAddresses=r120s5" in the ini file, Opera build 1546 starts, but I get the internal connection error.

Build 1577 and higher versions crash on start. I didn't download every build.

    Crashlog of build 12.10 1615:

    crash.zip

  9. With "[iPHLPAPI.DLL]GetAdaptersAddresses=r120s5" in the ini file µTorrent 2.0 crashes on start.

Does µTorrent 2.0 start or even load without the stub?

What is the nature of the crash (is it silent or is there a message)?

You can also try using the GetAdaptersAddresses (or whole IPHLPAPI.DLL) from 2K, XP, ReactOS, Wine, WildBill, or blackwingcat.

    Kstub822.log: = IPHLPAPI.DLL:GetAdaptersAddresses =

    1. Without  "[iPHLPAPI.DLL]GetAdaptersAddresses=r120s5" µTorrent 2.0.4 works fine.

    Prompt: No combination works. (GetAdaptersAddresses=)

    2. Message: screenshot

The crash dump dmp file is empty.

    3. Whole IPHLPAPI.DLL of Wild Bill in the system folder: µTorrent starts and runs.

  10. There was a post in another thread by LoneCrusader mentioning the existence of chipset drivers for i925 usable on Win9x.

I downloaded the package but did not get a chance to play with it yet. I'm not saying they exist for 965, but there might be a little hope.

Mmmm... sadly, the INF's in the package are all 2K and up (depending on the INF). Whether they could be "modded" and used is apparently still up for debate. It would have to be done by someone who has one of said chipsets.

I extracted the package with Universal Extractor on an XP machine. submix8c is right, all of the .INF files have "Signature="$Windows NT{:content:}quot;" and the package makes no mention of 9x/ME anywhere inside.  :(

    However...

It looks like all this package (and the last working package for 9x) contains is a bunch of .INF and .CAT files. Unless I'm missing something here, all one should have to do is modify the .INF's to be 9x-compatible (as xrayer has done), because the only purpose they are serving is to specifically identify the devices on the motherboard. I'm not seeing any .SYS files or the like that would require Windows 2K/XP for compatibility. The real problem would seem to be finding drivers for video, sound, ethernet, and other integrated devices that actually have driver files other than .INF's.

(Or am I REALLY missing something here??   )

ICH8 Update for xrayer's driver. Unfortunately I can't test it. I added Q963, Q/P/G965 to the "945.inf" file and 925X/XE to the "915.inf file". I hope somebody check it out. I really can't say if it works. I haven't such a board.

I had forgotten the ICH8 SMBus Controller. I added it on Wednesday the 21. November 2012.

    Ich8.zip

  11. Please, anyone note:

There is no proof, nor any hint, that any Intel chipset of the x900xx Series can be used with W98SE, or, probably, any W9x/ME, except for the x915xx.

There is no such driver to be found.

The only one person stating this is the starter of this thread (no offense, galahs, forgive me).

There is virtually no other location on the internet than this thread on MSFN that makes this statement.

    Regards,

    Ragnar G.D.

    Hallo ragnargd,

xrayer's driver supports ICH7 chipsets 945/946/975/955/31/41. He added driver for ICH10 chipsets, but it can be that the driver doesn't work correctly. I've tested successfully the driver for G31, G41, i945. The intel onboard graphics and sound aren't supported by the driver.
  12. Curious if there's anything special to be done to use the bearwindows VBEM.

Make sure, that you have a clean uninstall of Nvidia or ATI drivers =>  driver cleaner 1.5 build 14. Bearwindows: "Before installing VBEMP.DRV I recommend removing any display drivers installed and switching to the standard VGA mode 640x480x16colors."

I now have this hooked up to a wide screen monitor (16:9), but all the resolutions I can choose are 4:3. Is there a way to fix that? Is there a way to get the command prompt and other command line Windows to work without having to be full screen?

Sorry, I never tested wide screen on WinME/98. Which resolutions you can choose? AFAIK the Nvidia driver 82.69 supports wide screen.

  13. Some printing tests with Kext and ComDlgKs.dll installed:

    Sumatra pdf => OK

Firefox 8 and 9 => a lot of print jobs have perfomed correct (especially text contents), but others fail with an error message or the print is incomplete. Usually these versions don't crash in order to print.

  14. There's no official driver and xrayer's driver doesn't support intel chipsets G/P/Q965 and ICH8. It's your risk to buy this board. You can check it out and tell us your results.

I looked in the manual of P5B-DE (P5D-DE not found): AMI Bios, Storage Configuration: It's possible to set the compatible mode for legacy OS (4 devices).

  15. http://windows98.ic.cz/

    More specifically:

    http://windows98.ic....et/intelinf.zip

I may have gotten a few from the extracted version of this file:

    http://windows98.ic....ntel_inf865.zip

I think the majority of them are working too, everything seems to be showing in the Device Manager except the Ethernet Controller and the PCI VGA driver.

    EDIT:

I just noticed that all the devices that are functioning have a driver listed in the description from the registry. I think *those devices that aren't functioning* do not have drivers in that file I downloaded. Further, I believe this is causing me issues such as not being able to update or change drivers, or even switch to MS's generic VGA driver.

    Hello Steven W

There isn't a WinME/98 driver for your onboard graphics Intel GMA 950 (VEN_8086&DEV_2772&SUBSYS_1B761019&REV_02). You could try the bearwindows VBEMP 9x driver, but you said that the device isn't listed in your Device Manager. Did you already have looked in the System Information MSInfo32 for Components / Problem Devices? => ACPI Problem? What about PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2771.DeviceDesc="Intel® 945G/GZ/P/PL PCI Express Root Port - 2771"?

I 've successfully installed the chipset driver (windows98.ic.cz) on different systems, but of course with PCIE graphics card. For example Fujitsu-Siemens D2156 A1, (i945G) and ATIX800XL (I've to disable HyperThreading on this machine).

Known problem: Shutdown issue with Nvidia cards. My little problem with all those systems, that I can't install a USB printer. I can't get a virtual port. I've successfully installed it on systems with i865 and i915 boards.
