merely having the shortcut will not allows others into your pc. that shortcut will allow you to connect to another computer. you can disable others (or even yourself) from connecting to your computer by right clicking on my computer --> properties --> remote tab --> uncheck both remote assistance and remote desktop. and i do believe home does not have the backup utility.

you cpu problem was not due to the shortcut. deleting shortcuts does not delete the actual program. you can recreate the shortcut if you need to. remote desktop connection (RDC) is used to access a remote control - like remote control another computer - that's all. do you have xp home or xp professional. i'm not 100% certain but xp home may not have the backup utility.

have you tried disabling it from going to sleep in the first place in device manager? i would try that.

I believe you are supposed to integrate WMP11, then SP3, then IE7. You should use the network install version of sp3.

I was a fan of IE7 until Firefox 3 came out. It's a great browser and the extensions available make it worthwhile. However, after using it for some time, I just happened to question the legitimacy of some extensions that can notify you if you have new email. For example, I was using the extension called GMail Manager to check my gmail emails periodically. It's a great extension. But then I started to wonder: How do I know that the password I supply is not being stolen by the author of the extension? I mean, who is to say they aren't doing that? How do we ensure the extension that require our passwords are safe to use? There are many others out there other than GMail Manager. Hummm.... any have similar doubts? I've disable this extension for now... I'd rather just sign in to Gmail and check my mail.

If you want to add the drive to "SendTo", then in run, type "%userprofile%\SendTo" (including quotes). Then right click in that folder and choose to create a new shortcut. Then type in F:\ for your location of the new item. That's it. Now it should show up. Also, you cannot copy your existing installed apps there. But you can install new apps to your new drive. when you are given the option to choose the location of the new app, you simply choose your F:\ drive. Any time you are asked to save a document or download a file, you simply choose your new F:\ drive and save it there. I would, however, create folders in the new F:\ drive to organize it better; like F:\documents for documents; f:\applications for software, etc.

MS Word as de facto world standard: I despair of humanity
spacesurfer replied to stevenjs's topic in Microsoft Office
Yes, you are an egghead as your sig states at bottom. This forum is for legitimate questions and answers, not for ranting about how you dislike Office. Please take your questions elsewhere as we do not want to read your essay about how "MS this" and "MS that". Maybe other forums may sympathize with you. -
Thanks for the info and i think you may be right that it's shellstyle.dll as i have seen the common tasks at the bottom instead of the side in certain themes... however... Do you know how to customize the "other places"? It would be great if someone who had the know-how to write a basic guide on customizing that portion! thanks.

You said it buddy! I think people are running into problems when they upgrade and find their old programs incompatible in Vista rather than fresh new Vista installs. Thus, those who upgrade are the ones creating all this uproar. So, it wouldn't be reasonable to restrict programs to those after Vista RTM'd. Of course, those programs written prior to Vista would most likely work in XP only and per chance in Vista under compatibility mode.

I've gotten Nero 6 (portable version) to work in Vista in compatibility mode. And yes, newer versions support HD DVD burning. So unless you plan to live in the past, you can find satisfaction with standard DVD's.

Can someone explains what is the advantage of MCE? I have an HDTV that I can connect to my laptop with a RBG cable. Thus, I can play HD movies from my laptop on the TV using Windows Media Player or Media Player Classic. So, would I benefit from MCE because the only thing I see that is in MCE is the addition of the Media Center which I really don't need. So, what is the advantage of MCE? Also, are there any remote controls additions out there that I can use to play, pause, etc? Thanks.

This is what I found. On a slipstreamed version of XP SP3, the DST update dated April 2008 installed. On my existing XP SP2 updated to SP3 manually on my laptop, the DST update dated April 2008 would not install because it said "Update cannot be installed as a newer or same timezone update has already been installed on the system". So, it seems I may have updated my laptop with this update through another avenue but I know for sure I didn't update it manually on my laptop as I do not see the older KB914387 or the new KB942763 installed.

pdf passwords are also easy to crack. there's software that can do it or use brute force to do it. i use certificate security on my financial docs in pdf. i haven't heard of being able to crack certificate security yet.

add this addon to firefox: http://f22.aaa.livedoor.jp/~ptdb/firefox/theme.html. it adds a new tab button to the right of the last tab just like in ie7. i was solely using ie7 because this tab was so useful. now after i found this add-on, i've switched to firefox.

Hummm... I bought some Windata DVD-r's from Micro Center. The DVD Info program says they are: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:TYG02] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R] Manufacturer Name : [Taiyo Yuden Co. Ltd.] Manufacturer ID : [TYG02] Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- [ DVD Identifier V5.0.1 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- and thus they are good quality. However, my real world experience tells me they are crap as I had backed up a lot of data on these and now they are no longer readable. I have stopped using them except to burn something and give to other people.

Humm, if you're the administrator, you show know the password. Most likely, it's blank.
-
Unless the user specified the administrator password at install or later, the password is blank by default. when installing, right-click on the program, then click on "Run as.." and it will give you dialog to choose to run as administrator and enter a password.

looking for a PCI card with DVI and 1920x1080p resolution
spacesurfer replied to ceez's topic in Hardware Hangout
A graphics card is one aspect. The other is your TV. Some HD TV's are 720p and some are 1080p. Do you have a 1080p HDTV? If so, then it can display 1920x1080 or 1440x1080 resolution. Also, the designation 1080p is not really correct. It is 1080-24p or 1080-50i or 1080-60i. So, I think it's more to do with your monitor or TV than your graphics card. -
I've got a 2 page resume in .doc format. I can't figure out ho
spacesurfer replied to Zilched001's topic in Microsoft Office
there are cases when the backspace does not work, like when you have tables that reach the end of the document. This is very annoying and I also have not found the solution to this other than decreasing the bottom margin until page 2 is removed. This problem has persisted through many versions of word. The other problem is when creating a PDF from such a document and you have the pages numbered, you can't simply delete the last page in PDF as the total number of pages will be off by one. Sorry, buddy. I don't think there's a solution other than decreasing the margin or making your text smaller until it fits on one page. -
you need to replace explorer.exe in dllcache with the patched one.
