  1. Let's wait for the specs. However, it was just a very short period, which I would date to 96-97, maybe first moths of 98 at the most before ANY motherboard adopted the int13h extensions: http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/bios/sizeGB8-c.html The "real" trouble is that those motherboard will probably have ATA 1: http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/stdATA-c.html or ATA 2: http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/stdATA2-c.html I.e. so called ATA-33 or at the most ATA-66 IDE interface, which will reduce any OS to a hog with todays amount of data read and written: http://www.storagereview.com/articles/9908...ata66vs33a.html jaclaz
  2. That is a form of hybrid CD, "mixed mode", the so called CD-Extra (CD Plus or Enhanced CD). A number of commercial tools will do this kind of cd's. The procedure using cdrecord and mkisofs is sketched here: http://wizardlinuxteam.altervista.org/wiki...oni_separate.29 http://howto-pages.org/cdwriting/11.php But you seem like having problems with the first run of cdrecord, it is very possible that Vista breaks compatibility with cdrecord, but it may also depend on the actual build/version you are using. Latest versions should be Vista compatible, but you may need to compile yourself: ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/ Latest compiled Win32 port should be this one: http://home.arcor.de/artemis002/tools/cdrt...9-bin-win32.rar Courtesy of cdrtfe: http://cdrtfe.sourceforge.net/cdrtfe/index_en.html http://cdrtfe.sourceforge.net/tools/index_en.html You can also try to launch it in "compatible mode". jaclaz

    Opera 10

Apart the 2009 Award you just got for the most gratuitious use of the word "sycophantic" on a technical board , I agree completely to your proposal. I would also add: This way, you will also have more time to focus on important things like supporting Opera on portable devices with a 0.01" inch screen, or no screen at all and of course to better Opera Unite, so that every moron around will be able to share easily (and illegally) everything he has on his/her PC, and this will greatly help to find a way to shut down your business for legal reasons: BTW, I personally find a grest idea to make the new features: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=340121 UGLY in I.E. this is exactly what the good MS guys did for years (deliberately creating web apps that created content INcompatible with Firefox and Opera) and one of the reasons why they gained so much sympathy from the non-technically-impaired public and from EU. Heck, as soon as they managed to have a good platform, they are killing it's base for new features. Of course my opinion is strictly personal and most probably not the best advise from a commercial point of view, I am not a market guru like the ones that suggested that Coke and Pepsi should have a new formula and taste: http://www.walletpop.com/specials/top-25-b...ops-of-all-time (check entries #1 and #13) jaclaz
  6. Hmmm. You don't have to go very far away.... http://www.msfn.org/board/tool-hide-consol...ows-t49184.html jaclaz
  7. Well, the good thing about life its that everyone has his/her own reasons. The reason why I am not suggesting you another app, nor suggesting you anything else, is that you do not detail the "very specific purpose". Just in order to not appear completely unhelpful, I will throw in the "gracetime" command, without comments. jaclaz
  8. I am completely sure, instead, it's coming from experience . Obviously a "new" drive, in perfect working conditions, has more probabilities to create a "good" burn even at its highest theoretical speed. Yes, of course a CD/DVD read on the same burner gives usually good results. But would that same CD/DVD media give the same results on another CD/DVD reader (possibly oldish and a bit flaky)? Remember also that generally speaking burners are mor "accurate" than plain readers. About "good" media, there are known issues not only with mere "quality" of media, but also on "couples" media/burner. Example: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=20755 jaclaz
  9. NO!!! DO NOT, FOR ANY REASON, SWAP BOARDS ON MODERN HARD DISK DRIVES. (unless you really, really know what you are doing ) I am of course not familiar with availability of electronic equipment in Jordan, but I doubt you cannot find by the dozen some NOKIA cables or some other USB<->Cellular Phone data cable that "talks" TTL, and an experienced guy to test them. I pointed you to an alternative very simple DYI circuitry. Even if you cannot find a MAX232 or similar IC, I am pretty sure you can find someone with a solder gun, some soldering paste and flux and some thrown away electronics: http://www.uchobby.com/index.php/2007/06/1...ptor-explained/ jaclaz
  10. No , you need a TTL level interface, NOT a RS232, (and not a parallel centronics, and not a VGA, and not anything else but something that gives the appropriate signals). A good part of this thread is about people asking if they can use whatever they have handy instead of what is needed, and they are told no, you can't use that. On the other hand: Would you risk that with something that may in theory blow the board? Read this: http://www.uchobby.com/index.php/2007/06/1...ptor-explained/ You need AT LEAST a poorman's converter (and it is not guranteed it will work). TTL levels: http://www.interfacebus.com/voltage_threshold.html RS232 levels: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RS-232#Voltage_levels WHY a converter of some kind is needed: http://www.maxim-ic.com/app-notes/index.mvp/id/83 jaclaz
  11. Maybe you missed that the FAQ's: http://www.msfn.org/board/faqs-t116766.html try to address common problems, and #4 seems like the one you reported . I find much more "preoccupying" the other two issue you reported: D: as drive letter Setup files deleted Can you post some more exact details of what you did and which options you chose (and also which version did you use) jaclaz
  12. Yes , usually later versions have "better" capabilities and work "smoother", (the 7-zip developer likes to work this way, as opposed to the usual MS way ) jaclaz
  13. There is no .rsrc file in the exe file I downloaded. The image files are directly at the root, along with 2 other exe files. And when I open the images there is not that many files: e.g in cdboot3.img there is one file called fdc.sys, and in fdc.sys there are only 7 files. And similarly for most of the images. Am I missing something ? Or didnt I downloaded the right file ? Which files did you download? The ones I am talking about are the ones on the reference given by cdob: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994 Files are Respectively SP0, SP1 and sP2: WinXP_EN_PRO_BF.EXE winxpsp1_en_pro_bf.exe WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU.exe Are you using 7-zip or another app? I am using right now 9.07 Beta. In cdboot3.img there is a number of files, among which there is fdc.sy_ which contains (ONLY ) fdc.sys . jaclaz
  14. Very good. You just joined the club of blindfolded troubleshooters. It is OBVIOUS that MS has not documented anything about this , they have been bragging around for years saying it was IMPOSSIBLE. (just like Internet Explorer being a "core OS" file, running 2K/XP from a USB stick, etc., etc.) Of course to get some target when shooting blindfolded you need lots of patience and you need to shoot a lot. As always, the suggestion is to forget (for the moment ) the actual XP install from your USB floppy like device, and start finding the solutions. What I would do would be (if I get it right you now have a booting USB stick capable through grub4dos to chainload SETUPLDR.BIN) to leave just grldr and menu.lst on the stick, removing all the rest and add to it the contents of the boot floppies mentioned by cdob: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=22716 Open the downloaded file with 7-zip, then from within it open .rsrc, then open RCDATA then open CABINET then open each of the floppy images and extract from it the files to root of the stick. Try booting from the stick, you should get past the errors you are getting now. (and stop to something else ). The TXTSETUP.SI_ in the floppy set has: Directory di C:\Downloaded\XPSETUPFLOPPIES\Root_of_stick 19/12/2009 20.46 <DIR> . 19/12/2009 20.46 <DIR> .. 17/08/2001 14.06 28.558 1394BUS.SY_ 17/08/2001 14.06 15. Well, googling for: DOS NTP client program for a Network Time Server gives this: http://josh.com/SNTPC/index.htm and this (win09x - not DOS): http://nettime.sourceforge.net/ See also here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ntpd http://cspry.co.uk/computing/Indy_admin/ntpd_time.html http://www.ntp.org/ It seems like the Delaware University program can be compiled for DOS too jaclaz
  16. Just for the record different versions of Symantec Ghost appear like being "more derivatives" from Powerquest's Drive Image than from Binary Research: http://ghost.radified.com/ghost_alternatives.htm http://ghost.radified.com/norton_ghost_90.htm jaclaz
  17. The "right" one should be this one: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=22716 On floppy it is possible that files go into root (instead of a subdir), see cdob's post in the above. jaclaz
  18. Happy I contributed to make another happy bunny. http://www.msfn.org/board/cant-access-repa...27-page-10.html jaclaz
  19. Can you elaborate on this? How were these files copied? The LOG is saying that you have 0 Mb source: jaclaz
  20. @submix8 Unless I am mistaken, the OP posted: that he has a DELL XP ISO and the .iso ONLY jaclaz
  21. No prob, we 8+3 max experts (dinosaurs) can read "between the letters" of a filename better than young people used to filenames (LUXURY! ) like: which of course means that you will create a lot of confusion once you will release other tools USB related. Since you are going anyway beyond the 8+3 go all the way : Completely unrelated, but sometimes colours are useful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_color_theorem If I may, I would re-add the feature of 0.9 (updating it of course) as an option. i.e.: Siginet's PLoP USB Boot Manager Installer + a radio button to EITHER: add PLoP only <-selected by default add PLoP AND grub4dos Though I do like "vertical" apps, a single choice is not overcomplicating it. Someone that wants to also have grub4dos would find your tool handy. jaclaz
  22. Ahem... http://www.msfn.org/board/run-windows-7-xp...vt-t140245.html jaclaz
  23. Most probably you have a SATA drive and miss the appropriate driver in the source. The dedicated forum to "Install Windows from USB" is casually named "Install Windows from USB" (as opposed to "Multi-Boot CD/DVDs") and is here: http://www.msfn.org/board/install-windows-usb-f157.html Check the FAQ's first thing: http://www.msfn.org/board/faqs-t116766.html If still it doesn't work (it would be very strange, as we have a great number of positive reports from the eeePC community) see if any of the alternate methods work. jaclaz
  24. Actually we helped in WRITING the grub4dos guide : http://diddy.boot-land.net/grub4dos/files/thanks.htm If you are allright with it, I would split your post in a new thread dedicated to "USB seen as floppy" where we can continue experimenting, without increasing too much the length oc the "main" thread. I am afraid that you will need lot of patience as we will need to carry lots of experiments, but mo, we are not cornered (yet). jaclaz
  25. I won't argue with you, either over this thing. If everyone is happy with calling this feature IFS, it's allright, I stand corrected, and everyone is happy. jaclaz
