  2. Updated to Nov Many new "obsoletes" Started using Win 7 in April IIRC
  3. I finally updated my 2003 Server hotfix list, if anyone needs / cares. The nice thing is that I go back and remove hotfixes that the newer ones make obsolete. The bummer is that I believe I am the last guy on Earth using Server 2003 and needing hotfixes for it.
  4. It will exclude subfolders. Minor technical explanation: In TXTSETUP, system32 destined files end in 2,1,0. Subfolders have a completely different destination, note the [WinntDirectories] section. That's not a complete explanation of course but you get the idea.
  5. Problem with TXTSETUP (or LAYOUT) but might also be your driver INF. I need more detail. Specifically, I need to see the driver's INF file. Send it to me via PM so I can look at it. Then we can go from there. All source disk entries in TXTSETUP and LAYOUT should be changed to 1 anyway, and the _x should of course be removed from all of the file entries. That will eliminate this error during other circumstances.

    Password?

XP home's gonna act a little weird -- the fileset's meant for Pro. You should be able to just specify a password in WINNT.SIF if my memory serves me. I imagine the password is blank? I do have a reg setting in my files that allows the use of a blank password.
  7. You may find a version of the list with links more to your liking
  8. HFSLIP was a slipstreamer for Windows 2000, XP, 2003, and XP 64 bit. A variant was even developed for Windows NT 4 to create a SP7. It was a beloved and very active project until people kept openly admitting they were using it commercially in business settings, despite the author's wish that it be only for personal use. It was GPL2. The GPL site specifically disclaims applicability to terms of use, meaning that the author can set his own terms of use. It was fully open source, but people kept saying, incorrectly, that open source means they can use it for business use. So the license got changed. It was still open source, still personal use only, and once again people simply claimed open source = business use. The author, TommyP, was also not getting one dime from the software despite putting in hundreds of hours and getting very little help -- he got more and more demands to fix bugs. He finally snapped when someone, for the twelve thousandth time, insisted that open source means "I can use this for business." So he stopped all support and decided not to offer the download here. You can find it around the 'net. It's still open source, still usable. He just doesn't want it hosted here... and of course people claimed: 1. open source means he has to keep supporting it as long as they want him to 2. open source means he has to offer it for download here at MSFN as well as email a copy to them whenever they ask 3. open source means whatever people want it to mean So after great fireworks and drama it came to an end. Unfortunate.
  9. Sure, it is safe to use. Gurg had to leave the board in 2006 due to health problems. No one took up the project because: 1. he had access to MS proprietary hotfix creation binaries that he did not share 2. the HFSLIP project was in full swing (HotFix SLIPstreamer). We were in friendly competition and were sorry to see him go. It's very dated but safe, sure. But then again you have to install everything from 2006 forward.... If you search, you'll find Gurg's thread in the win2k forum IIRC documenting what hotfixes he used.
  10. The DLLs with REGINST's are the system ones mainly. SHELL32, SHDOCVW, etc as you found. A random DLL here or there happens. If I'd found any others that were very significant I would have listed them (but then again I don't list any IE ones that I don't install) As for experiences you might discover some oddities. For example, and I seriously doubt I could ever duplicate this, I once carved out some REGINST's and had a system that could read files on the network but not copy them. The drag and drop did nothing. And I was being careful (or so I thought). So there is a possibility that you might destroy some functionality in Explorer and have to undo what you did. Obviously what I had done was screw to up my Zones. For updates use 2000, XP, 2003. Forget this auto update nonsense.

    Windows Updates

hi all, i updated the win2k page. all others are updated too. i have gotten very lazy and i apologize. i now use windows 7 and have very little motivation on the previous generations of windows. i will say that since rt7lite is out, and since so many files in windows are the same, customizing win 7 is fairly straightforward. the fileset work i did for so long was so long ago and i just don't intend to update the xp or 2003 sets any more either. i encourage people to apply what they have learned in this forum to dissecting win7. emailed bristols about this too
  12. QFT. If this is your issue, you seriously need to read the rest of the thread -- not stop after two posts on page one. I'll say this for the benefit of anyone reading, and I'll say it three times: the issue with HFSLIP is not, and never has been, redistribution. The issue with HFSLIP is not, and never has been, redistribution. The issue with HFSLIP is not, and never has been, redistribution.

    FDV fileset for XP

Hi all, Hi Kalo! The 2000 fileset is where it's been. Since no new hotfixes came out -- it's done -- and since I no longer use the OS, I don't anticipate any more changes to the fileset. I encourage individual tweaking but alas I don't have the time to really answer questions (in any detailed way, that is).
  14. I got it done early this month. Thought I'd post since it's been a long time and I am sure newer users have no idea about its existence. http://www.vorck.com/windows/hotfixes_2003.html
  15. Open HIVEDEF.INF find HKCU,"Control Panel\Colors" and HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop" make all of the edits you like for colors and presets and etc. add these to SHELL.INF: HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced","ClassicViewState",0x00010001,1 HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\ClassicViewState","DefaultValue",0x00010001,1 HKU,".DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced","ClassicViewState",0x00010001,1 HKCU,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced","WebView",0x00010001,0 HKCU,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\WebView","DefaultApplied",0x00010001,0 HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\WebView","DefaultValue",0x00010001,0 HKU,".DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced","WebView",0x00010001,0
  16. Yes, the values are in HIVEDEF.INF. Find HKCU,"Control Panel\Colors" and HKCU,"Control Panel\Desktop" Make edits to your heart's content I have to admit also though that I do not understand exactly what you want

    Fileset 9, all done

yes, 2000 is cd only; sorry. you might be able to do it anyway but the problem is that because things are the way they are, the install will ask you for like 300 files that are not used, so you have to put a piece of tape on your ESC key to keep the install going (or set your coffee cup on it??) and it will install okay. annoying but it works. in general, graduate school keeps me so busy that unfortunately i just do not have time for any of this anymore. i can mod this sub-board no prob but i mean as far as developing my own work further. the 2000, xp, and 2003 filesets unfortunately have to stay as they are UNLESS i am given the data to change or the precise fix for a bug.

    Fileset 9, all done

These errors are from the HIVE files. Probably HIVESFT. Help me out here guys. Run a file compare with the earlier ver and tell me what you find.
  19. I don't know if it's possible. You could unregister that DLL and see what happens I guess. I don't know much of anything about this DLL. I don't know which route is best, either: if formatting or installing is preferred. No idea. ?????
  20. Public domain works can be released with the Creative Commons license. Then the license wouldn't even apply. Public domain works literally mean free and unrestricted use. They are copyright free. Someone attaching a license to something when it's in the public domain (they don't have the rights to it) means you can ignore the license. I literally meant suggestions that the developers had not tried. Not projects. That's what THIS forum is for. You know, Tomcat76 wasn't on the project originally. He was just some random guy who contributed massive amounts of code, then took over development. Not in the least. As the only mod left in this subforum it leaves me explaining what the deal is. Which is hard to do because if it were me, I probably would have done things differently, but I do believe that people need some sort of answers. People keep asking and questioning and I do the best I can to explain but ultimately it's a decision resting with Tom who isn't even here now to read these scolding posts. I'm sure PMs thanking him for a heck of a ride couldn't hurt though.
  21. Mobo swap? Could it maybe be bad caps?
  22. A lot of this might sound snarky but I don't mean it to. not having a "official" (and trusted) distributor could create a lot of future problems Beta J was the last version. Its filename: hfslip-1.7.10_beta_J.cmd Its MD5: DF89784782AA5AD6A7AA21371FD18EBF People are free to support each other and swap ideas and new code chunks here. See also the creative commons license in the archive. Perhaps releasing HFSLIP to the public domain is the answer. That way, there would be no "owner" of the project Just so everyone understands what you're suggesting, this means TommyP would be giving up his Copyright on the work. Somehow I don't think he'd be okay with that. I could ask him to come and post his feelings on the matter however if really necessary. but I do believe my points do deserve some merit. I think he won't agree. Check the license included. The source can be legally modified. As an aside, I should say that I would have donated to HFSLIP, but technical reasons, not personal choice, prevented me from doing so. What were the technical reasons? Did Paypal not work? Did you e-mail Tom for his address to send a check? You should tell have told him exactly what did not work. Maybe a rethink of how the HFSLIP project is run could have helped in the regard. A rethink could have helped donations? What kind of rethink? You mean if Tom had sold it and required a license and proof of licensure before he provided support? He said a hundred times he didn't want to HAVE to support the project. He said he didn't like that it was like work. It was a hobby. Furthermore, to create demand in a product requires more than having people stumble upon it. I, Tomcat, and TommyP all spread the word on other sites. It didn't, and doesn't, matter. Ultimately, a LOT of people "just didn't get it." There are people who used it and who actually thought that it didn't slipstream. There are people who actually know about HFSLIP and prefer unattended methods (no, I know I could save myself a ton of work, I like doing things the hard way). It sounds absurd, but there you have it. People like pain. I hate to pick on others, but there's a guy here who has an extremely complex process for manual slipstreaming and he has a LOT of fans. What can we do? People like making their lives harder. It sounds sarcastic, but believe me, if you could spend any time in our shoes, you'd see it's absolutely true. There are reasons why there are many successful open-source Windows projects out there Well, you're free to name some suggestions that we haven't tried, I guess. Too late now, but I am curious. and why HFSLIP never reaped the benefits of multiple developers. And now I'm REALLY curious to hear your reasons. One of the most amazing projects of all time, a LiveCD of the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator on sourceforge, has lived and died several times for lack of developers. Each time it got resurrected, ONE guy took over. It's alive now thanks to ONE guy. Getting devs to work on something is not as easy as you seem to think. There were some contributions to the codebase but only Tomcat76 was a major developer. Heck even I did not contribute much of anything at all. Everyone got a lot of free work and Tom felt frustrated. Now, the tables are turned. He doesn't visit this forum and he is free of the burden, and everyone else feels frustrated. But I am pretty sure that people's venting is not going to get him to return. It would take a miracle but maybe if he got some emails asking him where to mail checks and then he actually got some checks he'd make certain re-considerations. But something makes me think that will not occur.
  23. XPsp3 2003 HFSLIP for complete slipstreaming including IE8 still works, if you're able to locate a copy.

    Fileset 9, all done

    latest beta preferred.
  25. I reckon the FDVfiles won't be updated either, if development of HFslip is stopped? My attitude toward the fileset has always been a little different -- if you're crazy enough to use my files on a corporate install, then either you are probably your own boss, or you don't care about user complaints when something bad happens. If it's the latter, then good luck and God bless, because I can't imagine your boss putting up with you for very long when mission critical applications or IE-only websites or programs that are both like LiveMeeting don't work. Using HFSLIP always means that there is a chance something might go wrong, like a messed up integrated IE 8 install from using a beta. Using my files means there's a pretty good chance something major definitely won't work, especially with the XP set, and I have, oh, a couple hundred private emails supporting that conclusion. I am pretty busy these days as I am in graduate school (to explain to non-US'ers, this is the degree after four years of college) and what I would love to see is a little more self reliance from some users. I don't say that to be a jerk, it's just that a LOT of casual users could end up debugging and fixing their own problems and then sending me the solution if they just took a few days to really analyze things -- that would be great. But it's not typical, unfortunately, and I'm usually the one who has to make fixes. Bottom line, my fileset hasn't ended, I'm just really busy. I also have two small kids (1 yr old and 2.5 yr old) and I don't usually have the time anymore that I used to. Important takeway point: My fileset's actual main aim, way back when, was to teach people about Windows -- that's why the detailed process. I hope everyone uses my example, not necessarily my fileset, and makes the changes that THEY are comfortable with. The nLite forum is filled with questions from people who removed things and then get scared or wonder how things work because many just don't know what they're doing. It's a different neighborhood here -- you're mostly all tinkerers, and to me, that sets this place apart.
