  1. Not necessarily.

I have seen Recovery DVD's that have anyway, INSIDE the HDD image, a \I386 structure.

Accessing the image to extract it (IF it's there) might be tricky.

Often a special tool or same Commercial software manufacturer used is needed.

    Some references of past cases:

    I stand corrected. :angel
  2. Is it possible to convert the recovery XP DVD to a normal DVD with nLite, removing this restrictive option? That is, can I make a normal XP installation in which I chose the partition to install it?
No. If the only option is to reset the HDD, then what you have on the DVD is an image of your HDD for your specific laptop. It doesn't contain any installation files.
  3. Good for him... but I still can't see any logic at all in why someone would go out, spend a premium on Macs, wipe off the great OS that comes with it, and then run only Windows?
The best person to comment on this would be cluberti (I'll send him a PM). I know he's got a MacBook Pro which he only uses with Windows Vista (but maybe Windows 7 now); I can't remember what his exact explanation was for doing so. I've got one too, but I run Mac OS 10.5 as my main OS and virtualize Windows 7 for when I need to use Office.
  4. Can you make me a member of both then, but revert me back to the SoftwareDevs group.

Is it possible to have both custom title images below my avatar?

You can't have two titles. The Software Devs group permissions and settings will take precedence over the Normal Sponsors group ones. The admins are the only ones who will actually know that you belong to both groups (through the admin panel, of course) - no one else.
  5. BTW, I've made a 1-year subscription payment to MSFN and I'm no-longer a member of the Software Developers group.

Is it possible to be a member of both groups simultaneously?

Technically, yes, but only the permissions from one of the two groups will apply to your account. I don't know if being a member of the Software Developers group gave you any additional abilities or not, but if you would like to switch back, just let one of us mods know. :)
  6. Thanks GH

Here are three things to do to solve this intermittent problem:

    1. Change the restrictanonymous value as in GH's link

    2. Launch secpol.msc, go to Security Settings, Security Options, Network Access: Sharing and Security Model for local accounts and change to "classic"

    3. Don't access a server from 2 different machines with the same set of credentials (think about it: when you're installing software on a few machines, you might login as admin from all three at different times to access a shared folder with the program you're installing).

So I assume the problem was solved?
  7. Not exactly technology news, but it is technology-related:

OTTAWA — Canada Revenue Agency is planning a wave of audits on Canadians who have sold products on the online eBay website marketplace.

Revenue Minister Jean-Pierre Blackburn said on Thursday that anyone who has sold products on the website could avoid audits, fines and penalties by voluntarily coming forward and declaring the revenue to the agency.

"Taxpayers should know that the tax laws that apply to traditional commerce apply in the same way to electronic commerce, like eBay selling," said Blackburn in a statement. "I strongly encourage eBay sellers, and for that matter, any taxpayer who has not already done so, to correct their tax affairs as soon as possible to avoid penalties or prosecution."

Following a recent Federal Court decision, the agency received a list of eBay sellers and their transaction records that will allow them to begin audits by the end of the summer.

The agency said it would use the records to determine whether sellers properly reported revenues on their tax returns.

I hope your taxes are in order.

  8. W3bbo, these don't actually conform to the forum rules. Perhaps you can resize them just a tiny bit (width must be less than 300 pixels)?

    5. Images in signatures shall not exceed a total of 300x100 pixels and 80kB. Flash and animated signatures and avatars are not permitted. Should you choose not to use an image as your signature, you may enter no more than 4 lines of text which shall not exceed a font size of "4", defined in both standard and rich text editors. Advertising and/or affiliates are not allowed in signatures nor avatars. Avatars are to be a maximum of 100x100 pixels. If your avatar or signature goes above these guidelines they will be taken off without notice. Any avatars or signatures found to be attached to a thread on MSFN being used as a host will be removed. Members with slow connection can disable other members' signatures when reading posts by going to: My Control - Options - Board Settings.
  9. Microsoft Security Essentials

Has anyone tried this? I am running it now. It seems geared toward the novice user IMO, however it appears to do a pretty darn good job. It doesn't hit on the FP that Avira and KAV did on here. It also picked up the two rar'd nasties I had for testing. Each were 3 or more layers deep in the rar file.

All in all, codename Morro is rather impressive so far. :thumbup

How resource-dependent would you say it is? I've got Windows 7 RC installed on my MacBook Pro under Parallels with 1GB of memory dedicated to it and use it strictly for using Office. Right now, it's got no security software installed whatsoever (the built-in firewall is disabled too) because I can't justify the need for it when I can simply roll back to a previous working state using Parallels, but it would be nice to have that extra layer of protection "just in case," provided it doesn't use that much CPU power and memory.

  11. I've considered buying an NES again but I'm picky. While the Famiclones are interesting enough that I almost bought them a handful of times, I am really looking for the NES-2, the top-loader. Problem is, I can't bring myself to spend over $50 for a 20 year old console.
I sold mine with 5 games for $50. :P Still have my SNES with Super Mario All-Stars, though. :D
  12. A leatherman and a backup leatherman? You're in the right line of work :)

  13. I use the 'Run As' command to access my own mailbox.

What mail program needs admin rights ?

He uses the 'Run As' command when using his family's account to run Thunderbird under and using his profile so that he doesn't have to go through the trouble of logging off, and then logging back in as himself.
  14. As far as I know, you can't. You need third-party software to do that. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, please re-read the rules as we've updated them, specifically:

    11. Do not use CAPITALIZATIONS in the topic title or when participating in threads because they will not attract attention - instead it will annoy many of MSFN's members. Using unnecessary font formatting (i.e., bold font, increased font sizes, colored fonts, etc.) on the full body of posts is also discouraged.
  15. I have 80 Dell Latitude C640's, after a fresh installation i check the device manager to see there is no modem driver installed nor is the computer missing any drivers (yellow questions).

On the side of the computers, they all have built in modems. Here is the steps i have tried to get the modem to show up in device manager and so i could use the modems already installed.

    1. Checked the bios (couldnt find anything).

    2. Scan for hardware changes within device manager.

    3. Update windows online to the latest service pack, got all the updates afterwards too.

    4. Used a different OS disk to load the machine.

    5. Used the dell service tag to look up and find the drivers on the dell website, then updated the modem with dell drivers and it was unsucessful.

Now, ima kind of puzzles in thinking is this a problem that spreads across all the laptops i just purchased? Is this thing turned off in the bios and maybe i missed it somewhere? Is there a update i need from dell or microsoft im just not finding?

Are you absolutely sure they have modems? Some laptop manufacturers will ship their laptops with the phone jack, but no modem. Check the BIOS to make sure there is actually a physical modem installed inside the laptop (or take it apart and check :P).
