  1. I don't know what's going on there as I rarely go in there. If you know all the ins and out of that forum, my question is why? You don't use it.
I'll agree on one thing and one thing only: Moderating that forum has been pretty time consuming for all of us mods. Why have we had to moderate it? Because of id*** spammers such as this one who constantly bombard the forum with links to their own so-called "service pack." I'm sure I speak for all of the Win 98 forum members when I say that they (i.e., the spammers) have become a PITA (no, not the kind you eat).
By "Archiving" do you mean keeping the threads in Read Only mode or backing up them and removing from public view?
He most likely meant keeping the threads and forum in read-only mode (it would make the most sense).
If the first, I guess that there will be no problems, except making unhappy a number of members, myself included.
This is a possibility, but it's also possible that with all of member projects that exist in that forum, most of the members who frequent that specific forum will find alternate means of communicating and sharing ideas.
  2. *sigh* I was hoping I could avoid posting this, but there was a copy of Windows made (modified by a third-party), back in the day, that would run on Macs. I had it running on my Mac clone (pre-iMac, 1997), and to be quite honest, it didn't run that well, but was somewhat usable.

I think I've still got a copy laying around somewhere... I should see if it runs on newer hardware (PowerPC-based, of course).

  3. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has approved a request by Bell Canada to implement usage-based billing for its wholesale internet customers.

The decision, made on an interim basis, could result in lower download limits for customers of smaller companies such as Teksavvy and Acanac that rent portions of Bell's network to provide their own internet services.

Smaller ISPs, which typically allow customers to download hundreds of gigabytes a month, may be forced to lower their limits to Bell levels. Bell's most popular plan allows customers to download 50 gigabytes a month.

The CRTC on Wednesday also approved a request from Bell that will allow the company to charge small ISPs 75 cents for every gigabyte over 300 that their customers use.

Smaller ISPs had fought the requests and said if granted, their services would become indistinguishable from Bell's. The CRTC last year also allowed Bell to extend its traffic management practices, where certain uses of the internet such as peer-to-peer file-sharing are slowed or "throttled," to smaller ISPs.

Independent companies are therefore required to throttle their own customers as well.

Although the CRTC ruled in favour of Bell during the throttling dispute, it also launched an inquiry into the larger issue of net neutrality, or how much control internet providers should have over the connections they provide to customers. The regulator is expected to make a ruling on net neutrality by the end of the year.

A discussion/rage session regarding one of the ISPs (Teksavvy) affected by this (I'm actually one of their customers and am pretty annoyed at the CRTC's decision right now): http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r22854579-...-CRTC-Descision

Just take a look at the comments below the CBC.ca article to see how raged Canadians are at this decision right now.

  4. IIRC, VirtualPC 7 (the last on Microsoft Made), only ran on a G4 or better. This machine sounds like a G3.

    • Apple Mac OS X version 10.2.8 or later; Mac OS X version 10.3 is required for the Power Mac G5
    • 700 MHz native* PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
    • 3 GB free hard-disk space
    • 512 MB RAM
    • 1024 x 768 resolution monitor displaying thousands of colors
    • CD-ROM drive (or connection to a local area network if installing a network)

  5. And gamehead, would it be a violation of the rules for him to sell a Mac on MSFN? Or to sell anything?
According to the forum rules, yes, which is why I brought it up:
    13. No user shall, by any means:

    1. Sell, trade, or give away hardware, software, or any other goods whatsoever.
    2. Offer any type of paid service or services to other members of the community. Offering any type of service in exchange for other goods or services is also not permitted.
    3. Directly request donations or otherwise solicit forum members for financial assistance. If you have an external site, attachment, download or other such resource for which you would like to solicit donations, references or links to external sites that give information on where a member might donate are acceptable, but linking directly to PayPal or otherwise directly soliciting members is not tolerated. The only exceptions to this rule are for member projects directly hosted by MSFN, or for projects where MSFN hosts the main support forums for member projects.

MSFN does not support any type of trade and shall not be held accountable. Any violation of this rule may result in an immediate ban with no further warning.

  6. It definitely has a PowerPC processor. Emulating Windows 98 on there will be incredibly slow (i.e., it won't be able to run anything properly), so your best bet would be to either use it as it is or sell it/give it to someone else. If you decide to sell or trade it, please be sure to do so without involving MSFN or its members so as to not violate our forum rules.

  7. I think it's a cross between my Mac Mini being a dud and me trying to squeeze 600 horsepower out of a Metro, yanno?

I got the late 2007 one that had 1.86GHz Core2Duo processor with 1GB of RAM. It was ok running OS X leopard - until I actually started doing anything. Once I loaded my Windows Virtual Machine, Safari, iTunes and an instant messenger, it became just as slow as my old 1500MHz C7 with half the amount of RAM doing similar tasks. I was disappointed that OS X Leopard took up so much of the Mac's horsepower on its own and partly due to Mac fanboyism that I had witnessed, had expected even the little Mini to be substantially more powerful than it was. The odd thing was though, it *did* slow down in general since I got it. When I first had it, I could click on Safari, then on iTunes and then, say, iChat, and within a second or two they'd all be running. Yet, even after formatting it, only a few months later, there was significant delay in launching Safari and iTunes alone. It just 'felt' much more sluggish. I often find this happens on a minute scale with Windows during what I call the 'wear in' period, a month or two after the install. But unless one carries on installing heaps of crap, Windows shouldn't continue to slow down. (I've never really witnessed this 'Windows rot' that people babble on about?) I felt that the Mac did, and I was utterly perplexed by it, especially after reformatting. With hindsight I realise I expected too much of it, but the way it seemed to slow down generally is just bizarre.

Odd. My MBP doesn't do that at all. I usually have anywhere between 5 and 10 applications open before I notice any kind of slowdown (though, I do have 4GB of memory).
BTW: I am planning to get the iPhone 3GS sometime soon. Be honest. Is it worth it? Have most of the bugs been squashed? Despite the camera being a measly 3 MP, is it good? Does it finally have image stabilisation or is it still as wobbly as a jelly in a blender? I particularly like the fact that you can use Airplane mode to switch off the telephone part of it without shutting down the device - perfect as I am an antisocial so and so :)
Definitely worth it (at least for me). There is a noticeable speed improvement on my iPhone 3GS compared to my iPhone 2G (also running OS 3.0). I haven't had a single problem with it since I got it. The camera is absolutely great - I was able to hold it up to my MBP's LCD (around 2 inches away) and take a picture of a website without any distortion or blurriness; so yes, it has image stabilization as far as I can tell.

Airplane mode's pretty standard nowadays... It was in the first version of the iPhone OS and has been on phones since... forever (my ten-year-old Nokia has it!).

  8. ...am I the only one who has this trend of devices which seem to be ever slowing down?
Nope, you're definitely not the only one. My iPhone 2G slowed down quite a bit after loading 20+ apps onto it, and a tiny bit more as soon as I loaded 3.0 onto it (not sure why), which is why I opted to go for the new iPhone 3GS - SO much faster and definitely worth it. :thumbup

My MacBook Pro, on the other hand, is just as quick as the day I got it. Maybe your Mac mini was a dud?

  9. Ever since we've got the new homepage (which I think is godawful tbh) my iPod touch fails to log in. I was lying in bed last night all cozied up and I thought I'd check some posts on here but after three attempts (I wasn't mistyping my pass) i gave up.

What gives? Is this an Apple Safari issue in general or just an iPod/Phone issue?

Definitely an issue with your iPod touch. Works fine on my iPhone 2G, iPhone 3GS, and my friend's iPod touch.

What version OS / firmware are you running?

  10. Ill do it if you pay me through paypal.

  11. OEM's never give out a volume license key with their hardware AFAIK. Dell uses their standard OEM key on all pre-installed copies of XP from what I can remember (same thing happened with a batch of Dells my Dad ordered for his company) and attaches a unique COA sticker on each box.

Also, that key is plastered all over the Internet since, as I mentioned, it's Dell standard OEM key, so it's nothing to be too freaked out about.

  13. Being an Apple fanboy myself, it is my duty to correct you - it's called an iPod touch (yes, I know iTouch sounds better, but Apple didn't name it that).

I used to have one (now I have a first generation iPhone) and simply loved it. The 2nd generation ones should be a lot better and faster though, so I'd say go for it. :P
