  1. I don't know if its and issue with my specific monitor (Viewsonic VX900) and/or video card (ATI RAGE Mobility), but running a samurize client on an area of a desktop background that is white and scrolling one's mouse over it BURNS PIXELS. That's right. At least a dozen gone. Just FYI.
  2. Uh yeah, thanks, I kind of realized that . I ran in safe mode and fonud some items, one being NETSTATT.exe in my C:\WINDOWS folder. Deleting that and a few other quick fixes seemed to solve the problem. Thanks anyway.
  3. Yes, I was naive enough to click on one of those links on someone's away message on AOL Instant Messenger to a .scr file. Not only was I stupid enough to do that, but I opened the file when it was done downloading. All sorts of problems now. I can't run task manager, msconfig, or regedit (neither from the command line nor from double-clicking the icons in explorer). Ad-Aware and Spy Bot Search and Destroy offered no help. System restore doesn't work. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  5. Would it be in my best interest to install this RC of SP2? In other words, for what reasons should I download this and for what reasons should I not download this? I am currently using XP Pro Build 2600 (no SP1) because I experience a slowdown in performance with SP1 installed. Thanks.
  6. I used Stardock's Icon Packager to change all of my icons in Windows 98. However, the trial period ended and even though it gives me the option of resetting my icons to the default ones, it doesn't do anything. I can only reset the icons on my desktop. Is there any way to restore all the icons to default? P.S. Going to the folder options in Windows Explorer and clicking on file types only shows some of the icons.
  7. That guy kind of reminds of me of Ken Watanabe (the supporting actor in The Last Samurai).
  8. I'm sure many of you have seen this already, but I am posting it in case anyone has not had the opportunity to watch this. http://www.flashplayer.com/animation/glassofwater_movie.php
  9. Certain skins of WindowBlinds, such as ones trying to look like Mac OS X (like this one), also have that "Rollup" option. Personally, I don't like WindowBlinds, but it's another option.
  10. Thanks. I tried it, but still the abnormal startbar and friends. Thanks anyway.
  11. Whenever I try to change a visual style or theme (including reverting back to the original), the start bar, explorer (windows and internet [we'll they're basically the same thing]) and right-click menus stay the same (they look like they're in safe mode). I have messed around with the uxtheme.dll file and have installed StyleXP and uninstalled it a couple of times. I've tried downloading the original backup uxtheme.dll and turning it into uxtheme.dl_ using the makecab command in command prompt and using it to replace the dl_ file I had in my C:\Windows\i386 folder. Does anyone know how to address this problem or even have a 100% sure way of restoring the uxtheme.dl_ file to the original? Thanks.
  12. Thanks for all your help guys. A quick scan with Norton Antivirus 2004 Proffessional did the trick. Problem solved .
  13. I'm not sure if this issue has been addressed before but I couldn't find it so I'll ask anyway. With a patched uxtheme.dll file, is it possible to apply Visual Style files as opposed to Theme files? I have a lot of visual style files and they are in the proper place, but do not show up in any of the tabs of the display settings. I've tricked double-clicking on the files themselves but they just bring up the display properties. Thanks.
  14. Sorry, it didn't work. In regedit I went to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\RUN\ and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN\ and the programs didn't show up. I did a search for the .exe names and they only came up as .pf files in the C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\ folder. I deleted those just in case and rebooted, but the problem still exists. Thanks anyway.
  15. I have an extremely desperate problem on my hands. Yesterday, my buddy was over and led me to a, let's just say, less than wholesome site. Lucky for me, myWindows firewall was not up and I had minimum security settings on my IE browser. I was able to remove a lot of stuff with Ad-Aware (about 360 objects!), Spybot Search and Destroy, and Add/Remove Plus!. However, I still have a bunch of processes that show up on my computer on startup and they totally eat up CPU (my computer is constantly running at 100%). For the sake of being complete, the processes are: YSlJoqfx.exe (or YS| or YSI, can't really tell the difference) mvucw.exe wea1d4c.exe bewms09.exe Only two of these processes show up at a time, but manually ending one of them makes another appear. I know it would be helpful to choose "End Process Tree," but I just wanted to know if there was a way to completely remove these from my system. (System Restore doesn't work for some reason ) Thanks.
  16. Thanks for the .ISO! Even though I'm not too familiar with Multiboot CDs, I'll figure out eventually. Thanks again.
  17. Anyone else use that service? (I need to find somewhere to host my desktop pics )
  18. When attempting to run Windows XP, it brings me to the screen where you can choose the safe modes or normal etc. However, when I pick any of the choices, it gives me the following message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM You can atteempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. I realize that it does not state which drive the Windows folder is in (it's in C). I am like many other people, and I purchase computers with pre-installed Operating Systems, and I rarely upgrade. Thus, I do not have a Windows Setup CD-ROM. I have other computers running Windows XP Home Edition, and I was wondering if anyone could help me in fixing this problem.
