  1. 32bit icon support - Do you mean the icons on the desktop or in the taskbar? If it is the icons in the taskbar then try -> http://www.dr-hoiby.com/TrayIconIn256Color/index.php I know that it is only 256 colors, but most tray icons are only 256 colors at most right? Even XP seems to only have 256 color support (To me at least)
  2. Well, you might want to consider removing/dis-integrating(aka using the Win95 shell) Internet Explorer from your Win98 installation. As far as I remember, it was the #1 cause of BSODs and instability for me. Yes, Direct Cable Connection is used for connecting 2 PCs together with a serial port, but I do not think that it is worthwhile nowadays when there is 10/100/1000Mbps LAN conection..... Wupdmgr.exe - I thought that this is used to launch Windows Update through internet explorer (Someone please correct me if I am wrong)? Internat.exe - Why do you want to change it? I thought that it is the icon you click to change your input language? CDPlayer.exe - Windows XP has it, I think, but it's hidden (Like windows media player 6.4, grrr.....) and what do you mean by it is a "analog" app? I agree though, it is very light. Worthwhile to keep, but it cannot rip CDs. mplayer.exe - Right, it actually seems to be 5.0-ish (From win3.1), and is quite useless, as it cannot use directshow plugins. Windows Media Player 6.4 - Windows Media Player 6.4 can play DVDs I heard (With registry tweaks). Why not just install the WMP codec upgrades? If you delete /windows/command (Not required for normal windows operations), you may want to retain start.exe, otherwise you cannot launch win32 programs from your command prompt.
  3. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but does the unpatched Win98 FDISK does not only have a cosmetic defect, but that incorrect figure it displays also limits your operations? For example, I tried to FDISK a 80GB drive, but it showed my drive @ 100% to only have much less than the correct 76317MB capacity (Which is displayed in the patched FDISK), and does not allow me to partition my disk beyond that. I DO know that the cosmetic defect in format.com does not affect it's function...
  4. Please make sure that the disk is not NTFS formatted. Win9x cannot read NTFS disks without 3rd party tools.
  5. You can't replace the Win9x DOS (Be it 7.00, 7.10 or 8.00) with FreeDos. Maybe you can replace the utilities with the FreeDos versions, but you can't replace command.com, IO.sys or MSDOS.sys. If you do, Win9x will NOT start, and complain that it requires MS-DOS 7.XX or MS-DOS 8.00, as win9x is tied to it's own MS-DOS version. Hacking may solve that though. Replacing the utilities? Maybe it's good, if the replacements provide better functions. But may have compatibility issues (FreeDos is not MS-DOS) + its usually bigger than the MS-DOS equilvilents in my experience. I think that there was another discussion like this one somewhere on this forum a few months back.
  6. Hey again, Sorry for the late reply, I was busy. Windows 95A(not 95a, OSR 1.0; 4.0.950A), B(OSR 2.0/2.1; 4.0.950B), C(OSR2.5; 4.0.950C), D(4.0.1111), E are all OEM releases. They are more rare, especially Windows 95D and Windows 95E, which were released to very few manufacturers(But they exist). They cannot be bought alone, but only with new hardware. 95B was the last version to NOT have IE integrated, and have USB support. I do not know the OSR level or build number for 95E, as it was extremely rare. Well, I know that this is not very good news, but unless there is a very major update for Win95, I do not think that the control panel will work 100% correctly, because it's core is too outdated. It's still good for other programs, but I guess not for Nvidia software..... You CAN try replacing user32 with a Win98 copy, but back up the original just in case of a system crash. May resolve your issue. Nothing wrong using Win95, I would too if I had the choice, as it's a lot lighter and cleaner, but SOME programs really need certain components that Win95 cannot support totally.
  7. Well, did you apply the Common Controls update, or rather, all official updates for Win95? What is your DirectX version? Also, some files like the win95 shell32.dll do not seem to support certain control panel extensions well (Like the win95 shell32.dll causing deskcp16.dll to cause errors in Kernel32.dll on a Win98 system), so you may not be able to access some control panel pages that are normally hidden(by the manufacturer) in Win95 but accessible in Win98. And yes, Win95 should have no problem using widescreen monitors, unless your video card doesn't. I only remember Win95(4.0.950) having an SP1 update(to 4.0.950a), and there wasn't a SP2/SP3. There were, however, several OEM releases of win95 like Win95A(4.0.950A), Win95B(4.0.1111/4.0.1212), Win95C(1st version to have IE integrated), Win95D, Win95E(Very rare)
  8. Before anything else, you cannot fit a 64-bit CPU into a mainboard supporting only 32-bit CPUs. Well, I'm no real expert on this, but I had read from somewhere else on this forum that Win9x is unable to use more than 1 CPU core. This means that you can run win9x on a duel/quart core CPU, but it would just be wasteful. I am not very sure whether win98 would run well on a 64-bit CPU, but I think that it should not have any real problem, but win98 would just not take advantage of the 64-bit system(Unless the 64-bit is too fast for win98). Also, do beware that few new mainboards have official drivers that are meant to work with win9x. Sure, very new computers are mostly 64-bit, but I still see more new 32-bit computers than 64-bit computers out there in 2008. However, althought it's possible to tweak Win98 to use >1GB RAM, please do note that it doesn't always work well with every computer, hence your mileage may very.
  9. Errm, well, I use the Win95 shell (4.00.950) on my Win98 system, but there still seems to be an obvious drag after transfering many big files....any other possibilities? The drag is still present, even after defragmenting my memory, and makes my system unstable.
  10. Hey all, I was just wondering, is there really a memory leak in Win98 as stated by outside sources (If so, it would explain the ever decreasing RAM)? 'Cause my Win98 system's 512MB RAM would decrease(and not increase back to around it's original vaue), after opening and closing programs. Also, why does a Win9x machine slow down after straineous activity like a transfer of many big files?
  11. I do not think that there is one. Anyway, the RAM(system RAM or graphics card RAM) doesn't need to be defragmented 'cause there is no seek time as there are no moving parts.
  12. But you can add files from a new version of windows and see if it works... But some files like kernel32 cannot be "upgraded". It may result in a BSOD. Try 98lite if you really want to lighten your system a little(but does not support slip-streaming).
  13. Actually, it should be like this: 1. At the prompt, type E: where E is your CD-ROM drive 2. then you should see: E:\> if you do not, type cd E:\ 3. Then type SETUP Note that it's not case sensitive, and you MUST have a DOS CD-ROM driver loaded at start up (like oakcdrom.sys + MSCDEX.EXE). If you get any messages like "Invalid drive specification" when you access your CD-ROM drive, either you're not using the right drive letter or the DOS CD-ROM driver didn't load properly.
  14. I meant by what did you do last before that problem appeared, also have you tried "System restore"? Anyway, ME is known crash even if you did not do anything to it.
  15. You need to start your computer from a DOS (win9x boot disk, preferably from win98) with CD-ROM support selected, then type SETUP at the command prompt, after you CD'ed to your CD-ROM drive. You may also need the installation disks/CD-ROM of your old version of Windows if you had deleted it/formatted your hard drive, and your 98SE CD-ROM is the "upgrade" version.
  16. Well, with the little details you provided it's difficult to find the problem(could you elaborate more on this problem?). Also, Windows ME is notorious for crashing often, and you would be better off formatting, and reinstall Windows.
  17. Well, no. Sleekv2 actually causes the win95 explorer to use SHELL32.W95(win95 shell32.dll renamed) instead of shell32.dll. The shell32.dll in the SYSTEM is then actually a win98 shell32. The win95 shell32 icons are unaltered by sleekv2, but explorer now looks for them in SHELL32.DLL(win98) not SHELL32.w95(win95 shell32), and is not an ideal solution as it may cause crashes(in explorer & other programs). That's why I created SH95UPD, to resolve the win95 shell32 missing exports problem, so that the win98 shell32 is no longer needed (Or at least reduce compatibility problems with other 3rd party programs.) Resource hack shell32 to add the win98 icons.
  18. You should be able to. I have not heard of anyone who could not use a 512MB video card under Win98 yet though.
  19. When you said you cannot play DVDs properly, do you mean that when you insert the DVD in your DVD drive, nothing happens? Win 9x normally does not play DVD movies automatically. Also, when you said that your USB ports are working, did you install the USB suppliment or did it's USB functionality come "out of the box"? PS: Welcome to the MSFN forum!
  20. Good to know that that it works, I may even extend SH95UPD to provide Kernel updating functionality like KernelEX for Windows 95 though... Thanks to all of SH95UPDs users and testers, but there would not be any more updates until somewhere in late October as I would not have access to my terminal. Very sorry for the inconvenience... However, please continue to post here what functions that are still missing and I will try and see whether I can implement them once I regain access to my terminal after my End of Year examinations.
  21. Thanks for the info anyway. Good job on the 82.69 drivers though. Anyway, is it possible to rip the driver out of a newer Nvidia display driver package for XP and use it on Win98? (Win98 does support WDM)
  22. Hi, My computer user Windows 98SE and has a Nvidia GeForce Fx 5200 graphics card. However, even when using the 82.69 drivers (since 81.98), this problem occurs: -The monitor gets turned off by the computer when there was inactivity for about 5 mins -When I try to wake the computer, the monitor turns back on, but Windows 98SE hangs with a patterned green line across the top of the screen (Vertical green stripes, about 0.5cm in height, across the extreme top of the screen). Is this a bug in the Nvidia driver, or can it be a sign of impending mainboard failure? Using the on-board i815 graphics adapter does not show this problem, and seems that this problem only occurs on Win9x (WinXP is fine). The graphics card is not the issue as this problem also occurs even when using another Geforce Fx 5200. I solved this problem temporarly by disabling "Turn off minitor" under power options, but that just wastes energy. Anyone else had this problem?
  23. Hi all, Here are the timmings for my main system: Startup: -78secs (17s to load the GeForce Fx BIOS, 10s to detect all hardware (up to the "Starting Windows 98" message), and about 51s to load Win98 to desktop with no HDD activity) No record breaker here though. Someone just got <35s(!) =X Shutdown: -2.7s (Mostly, but provided that I did not do anything that is very stressful pior to shutdown, such as the moving of many very big files. -about 5-10s (Maybe even 20s, but rarely) if I did do something very stressful. Main programs that load at startup: AVG 7.5 RAMDef 2.7XT Ensoniq Mixer Nvidia software and windows services (hotfixes, registry scanning, etc) System specs: CPU: PIII 1GHZ MOBO: Gigabyte GA-6OXM7E, 512MB RAM OS: Windows 98SE (Win95 shell), with IE6 Dis-Integrated, Multi-boot with MS-DOS 6.22 HDD: Seagate 80GB CD-ROM: Sony 8x CD-ROM GPU: GeForce Fx 5200 HDD Interface: ATA-100
  24. I do not know if this problem only applies to my computer, but did anyone else experience problems with Internet Explorer 6 after installing SH95UPD v0.0.4? The button icons disappear, but the browser appears to still function properly... Edit: I'll remove the SHFlushSFCache function, as it seems to be the cause of the problem.
  25. Thanks, the code may be of use, would certainly make work easier for me, but I was wondering, isn't it illegal to do a direct disassembly of SHELL32.DLL, and distribute it?
