Hi I've got a really annoying issue with the desktop redirection. We used to have an old server which had all the folders containing the icons for the desktop redirection. It all worked wonderfully until we decided to do away with the old server and put a new windows 2k3 server in. I thought that I could simply just change the path of where the redirected folders are located in Active Directory . So I did this and it seemed to work but I had a really annoying issue. I noticed that when people logged in, it was hanging on Loading Personal Settings for sometimes around a minute... This rung alarm bells and initially I thought it was something to do with DNS but I checked DNS and it all seemed good. I then went to the event viewer on the machine and looked at the application log. It said that the desktop redirection was successful but It was trying to copy the desktop from the old server which doesnt even exist anymore to the new location. For some weird reason it says its successful but that can't be as the location where it is copying from doesn't even exist anymore. So then I was stuck and everything I tried it still kept saying that it was copying the desktop folder from the server that isn't even online anymore. Lucky for me, the students all have manditory profiles so I recreated the desktop folders and then created a new manditory profile for the students and then the application log stopped talking about redirecting from the old server and the logons instantlly were faster... BUT.... What am I going to do with the 200 users who have roaming profiles?? I can't recreate all their profiles as this would take ages because I would have to re set up their email and personal settings... But it seems that the roaming profiles have something in them that keeps referring back to the old server for their desktop redirection?!! I have changed the group policy to point to the new location of the redirected folders but the roaming profiles seem to still look at the old location.. I tried removing desktop redirection completely but when I did this and the user logs on I get an error message from the computer saying It could not find the desktop (on the old server!)) It seems like it just ignores the fact that I have changed all the folder locations in AD.. Is there anybody out there who knows if there is something I can do with the roaming profiles (delete a file) or something so that it forgets about that old server?! Talk about annoying or what!!! It's things like this that make me hate computers Hope somebody can help

That's very interesting about the time because I was quite suspicious about that as it was. So how would I go about making sure the time syncs with the domain controller on all clients? Is there a group policy object that does this or a script? Your help is greatly appreciated thank you.

Hi does anybody know why my group policy is working randomly on the pc's? All the PC's are in the same OU, I checked this first. It seems like it applies the group policy when it feels like it.. It's strange.. I checked the application log on one of the local machines that was supposed to have the policy applied and it had an error saying something like this: Group policy was aborted , access was denied! Thing is that after a few restarts it will suddenly work... I Can't quite understand why.. It seems to just throw this error at random.. The policy that I'm applying is at computer startup so I can't see why I'm getting access denied messages... And anyhow it will sometimes work so that makes no sense. I checked the security settings on the netlogon folder where the scripts are located and they are allowing domain computers full control, authenticated users read and execute (Standard security settings) Anybody have any ideas?

I had a similar problem once. I fixed mine by altering the channel on the wireless router... I think you have around 11 channels you can use...

Schedule shutdown script issue
dubsdj replied to dubsdj's topic in Programming (C++, Delphi, VB/VBS, CMD/batch, etc.)
Turns out it was some weird timing issue... I don't completely understand but what I did was put a vbs message pop up that appears for 10 seconds at computer startup. When the message box closed it then executed the rest of the code .. Seems to work now... I still cannot understand why it was skipping the line in the script where it checks for the file but the pause seems to sort it out. Weird... Anybody else heard of this before? -
Schedule shutdown script issue
dubsdj replied to dubsdj's topic in Programming (C++, Delphi, VB/VBS, CMD/batch, etc.)
the files are all located in the same directory like I said, if i run this in windows it works perfectly. It just doesn't want to work in the computer startup policy and I don't know why.. Is there any way I can pipe the results of the batch file to a text file to identify what the problem is? -
Hi can anyone answer my question? I am running this batch file in the computer startup GPO. It basically checks for the file 'sched.txt' exists and if it doesn't then simply copies it to the c:\windows directory. It works perfectly if I run it in windows , it copies the file and if i run it again it detects the file and aborts.. all good But in the computer startup it seems to skip the part where it copies the file and but runs the rest of the script , which is a problem because then it creates more and more AT tasks... I'm certain this used to work in the computer startup before we changed our domain... Any ideas anybody? I can't think why it would not be able to access the c: drive on computer startup or computer shutdown policies?? Here is the batch file: @echo off if exist c:\windows\Sched.txt GOTO END xcopy %0\..\Sched.txt "c:\windows" cscript %0\..\schedshutdown.vbs 0\..\ :END ECHO "Shutdown Schedule Already Has Been Set"

Sod it, I'm using a script instead to add icons depending on which OU the computers are in... Much more efficient than the redirection thing.

How to delete old network printers script

They are on the server and are PCL -
Hi there I have a problem with desktop redirection. If I allow read and write access to the folder with the desktop icons in it, that works but the problem is that some pc's have individual software on them with icons in the all users desktop and these icons are then copied to the server and then everybody gets the icons on their desktop which I Don't want.... I tried just giving read access to the desktop folder on the server but it doesn't work properly when I do that because it keeps throwing an error about user has not got write permission to the desktop folder !! I dont want them to have write permission, it defeats the whole point of desktop redirection if i do that! I'm sure there is a way of sorting this but I'm all out of ideas... anybody know of a workaround which is fairly simple?

icon shadows look rubbish active desktop GPO

Thats a great idea, I never thought of that... Have you got any example of how I can set the background through the logon script? -

dubsdj replied to dubsdj's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
That Didn't work , backgrounds stopped working when I switched active desktop to non configured. I'm using Bitmap background because Jpegs don't seem to refresh properly. -

cheers for that, I will give it a try -
Hi there. I have set a group policy for users desktops and enabled Active Desktop. I have then added the bmp to the active desktop wallpaper. The users log in and the wallpaper appears fine, but the icons look awful, they are not transparent and look like they have been cut out of a scrap book??? Any ideas why its doing this? thanks

that is ofcourse she's not a computer wizkid who knows their way around Group Policy. If she does then the above wont work as she's an administrator and can go into AD and change it back.. Although its quite well hidden in the Admin templates

If you are on a domain cant you just do that in group policy http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323525 That's what we did...

Just put a shortcut to the application you want to start up in the ALL USERS startup folder, job done

Tell me about it, I work in a school and we have laptops coming in wanting wireless connection. It was all Jolly until Vista started turning up on the students laptops. Things that I found sometimes worked for me: 1. Norton Internet Security, this caused problems on XP but on Vista it was at another level. 2. Try changing the Use SSL 3.0 , maybe add Use SSL 2.0 also... This worked on occasions. This is ofcourse you have managed to connect to the wirless but no webpages are appearing. 3. An obvious one but check your proxy settings aren't causing a problem. 4. Check your connection in the network connections and make sure you have set your Key for your wireless TKIP thing... If you use that. 5. Good luck

How to delete old network printers script
dubsdj replied to dubsdj's topic in Networks and the Internet
Well I had no luck with all of the things above. Here's how i fixed my problem 1. I created a batch file and installed the printers 2. I then added the Stop and Start print services into the batch file after I had installed the printers. 3. I put the batch file in the group policy computer startup 4. I then created another batch file which runs the con2prt.exe and sets the printer i wanted as a default. 5. I created a shortcut to the con2prt batch file and put it in the all users startup folder on the machines where I wanted to default printer to be set. I know its a bit of a dick in hand approach but it worked for me... I hate printers.... For something so simple It's been a real nightmare to achieve. -

I'm having a problem with deleting old network printer connections that are no longer used that are in the registry. Does anybody know of a script that can do this and be used with Group Policy? The annoying thing is that when the user is logging in to the computers they are defaulting to the old disconnected printer. I have tried the whole set default printer script but it never works, it only seems to work if I run it from their desktop. I tried putting the set default printer script in the Computer Startup GPO and the user logon script GPO but it just never seems to work... The printer still defaults to the disconnected network printer. Maybe its just me but I think the whole adding and removing network printers is more complicated than it should be... Maybe I'm just missing something..

Ok so are u saying that in the policy for the OU containing the computers in the specific area I go to the user logon part of the group policy instead of the computer startup part? Many thanks to everybody for their help with this issue I'm having, I really appreciate it.

Hi there I wrote a script recently that looks like this: Set WshNetwork = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Network") PrinterPath = "\\server\printer1" PrinterPath2 = "\\server\printer2" PrinterPath3 = "\\server\printer3" WshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection PrinterPath WshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection PrinterPath2 WshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection PrinterPath3 WshNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter PrinterPath3 Anyway I execute the script via a logon.bat which is set in Group Policy Computer Startup The user logs in and the printers are added fine but it does not set the default printer to the one I specified????? It's really strange because if I run it from my desktop (I'm an Administrator) it adds the printers and then a second later the default printer changes to the one I want so It seems like the script does work for me but just not for the clients when logging in... I don't think its a permissions thing as I allow users to add and remove printers if they want because they are all removed when the log off anyway.. Does it have anything to do with the Current_user ?? The users have roaming profiles but I didn't think that would matter as its run at computer startup and should work anyway... But for some reason it ain't working properly.. Also could it have anything to do with it being in the Computer startup scripts and not in the user logon? Thing is that it needs to be applied to the computers as different areas have different scripts mapping different printers.. Any ideas?? Like I said the script adds the printers for the user fine.... just seems to not change the default.... Anyway thanks for any advice in advance.

Windows Blinds is quite good... Some people may disagree but I never had any problems with it. There were some great glass themes that I had running on XP.
