  1. both the mapper and the linker should be listed in the properties for the network card (network and sharing center -> manage network connections -> right click on your NIC and go to properties. the items should be listed there is TCP/IP and the other items available to the NI Well it wasn't any of those eg.. mapper and linker but you were right that it was in the network card properties. The driver that was causing the issue was this: Symantec Network Security Intermediate Filter driver I disabled that and now the shares are opening at lightning speed..
  2. ooh ic its the auto tuning thing... ah i know how to disable that from the command prompt. thanks
  3. Thanks for your post I don't seem to have anything like that on my Marvell Yukon gigabit network card
  4. Does anybody know if there is a work around for an issue where it seems to take ages to connect to a share that is on an XP computer? Anybody else seen this?
  5. Does anybody know if it is possible to give names to log off and log on scripts? For example, when a user logs out of a work station it will display the message "Running log off scripts" But is it possible for example to make it say "Running profile cleaning script" etc? Group policy software deployement displays the name of what its doing.. so why not log on and log off scripts? I would be interested to know if anybody else has thought about this and may know a way of doing this.. Thanks
  6. Many thanks, it was to do with the wake on event in the bios
  7. It turns out that the solution to the problem was to rollback the Trend Micro Anti Virus engine on all the clients. It was the updated engine that was causing all the problems with apps hanging. Just for any other googlers thanks
  8. Hi people / Kevin ;o) We are having an annoying issue on our network of XP PC's. Randomly the PC's are experiencing Application Hangs (Which we can see in the event Viewer) on various applications which is forcing the user to literally switch the PC off as they cannot close it in the task manager. This has happened to programs like winword.exe and ppoint.exe . It has been reported that it is when they are going to save their work that it happens but I can't really confirm or deny this. It sounds like a network / mapped drive problem. We have a number of mapped shares and a couple of DFS shares... nothing special.. Any advice would be appreciated.
  9. Hi I have an issue with Vista and the sleep feature. Whenever I put the PC to sleep the screen switches off and everything but the actual PSU is still running at full speed. Anybody know what I can do to fix that?
  10. ah dont worry, I just figured that out also Just open the port on my router and it worked.
  11. hmm ok I have managed to do the LAN bit by typing: http://192.168.0.101:80 I did have to open port 80 on my firewall but that was fine. So how would I then connect via the internet, does anyone know?
  12. Hi there, I have been testing something on a PC running IIS . My question is how can I connect to the PC running IIS and view the index page from another computer on the LAN and also on the Internet? I don't have a domain, I'm just running from localhost I really appreciate anyones ideas on this
  13. How come all I ever get from a full system scan is a tracking cookie?? I get that tracking cookie every time I do a scan.. Does Norton actually work? I ran spybot and got about 37 issues to fix... Is it all just being made up or am I just free of spyware? I dont know if this is true but I believe that the tracking cookie has something to do with MSN Messenger.. It seems strange that every time I do a scan with Norton all I get is this tracking cookie. I don't wish for spyware no , but I'm starting to wonder if Norton is actually doing anything.. I do like the Norton interface, I find it quite simple to use but I don't want it to be installed if its doing nothing.
  14. Oh and I also found that onboard NIC's also didnt often work so well with WOL And the guy above me also mentioned about enabling "allow this device to wake up the PC" Im sure u already have done this but if you haven't then try that also
  15. Steal a NIC from another PC and install it on your Sever, see if you get better results. I had a similar problem too and I ended up just putting a different network card in the computer and it worked after that. I also experienced the problem with the PC instantly switching itself on when I shut it down because of a rogue wake up packet.. I just changed the NIC and it was fine after that. The Intel ones seem to work best for me..
  16. Install the Nero Patches from their website.. that normally fixes that issue of the burner not being recognized
  17. I know its quite a simple answer but have u installed the latest version of MSN Messenger?
  18. Hi I managed to navigate to that key like you said but when I change the IEExplore from 1 to 0 it has no effect.. I even restarted the PC but still the pop up blocker is on. I backed up the registry and then tried deleting that whole key altogether but still that darn pop up blocker is on... arrgh
  19. Hi does anybody out there know of a script or a location of the reg key to disable the IE7 pop up blocker once and for all? It keeps enabling itself and annoying me cos we have some crucial IE Exam sites that dont work for Network users unless each person disables it themselves.
  20. Hi there, I know this is not a new problem but is there any solution yet with the Vista Plug and Play not recognizing new devices? I am tired of having to keep pointing the path to C:\Windows\System32 every time I want to install a USB Stick or another device.. Thanks

    Weird Problem

It might be your local Profile on your PC Try re creating a new profile (New User) I'm not that sure about xfire, although I have used it before but maybe the settings for xfire are stored in your local profile.
  22. Have you tried a different crossover cable? Also check the network cards TCP-IP settings do they have a static ip address assigned. I think in your configuration you would need to have static ip addresses unless you have something acting as a DHCP server on your network.
  23. shouldnt the dsl router be connected directly to the wireless access point?
  24. although a work around I use is when I install the printers on computer startup I make sure that the one I want as the default printer has a name that is alphabetically before the other printers. I seems to default to the printer that is first in the alphabet... But if you have a script that sets the default at computer startup, please post that script as I would be very interested to know how to do this.
