  1. I gotta say I have been testing this on my domain and I really cannot see what advantages this has over Windows 7. I find takes longer to do the most simple tasks which is not a good sign at all. plus desktop redirection coupled with the APPS makes the start screen a right old mess.
  2. Hi, I have set up folder redirection in Group Policy. All is well with XP and Windows 7.. Pictures are redirected to the libraries. But when users login to Windows 8, the picture library does not appear to be redirecting the the users home folder. Documents are redirecting fine, but not picutures. I just have a blank sample pictures folder showing.. Any way to get around this? Without hacking the registry. Thanks
  3. Just thought is it really worth the hassle. I have a corporate firewall which is pretty good... disabled Domain Internal Firewall..
  4. Hi, I'm slightly miffed about the internal firewall in my default domain policy.. I have enabled the domain profile on all computers in my domain (includes servers) why is active directory still working perfectly? I have set the block all except specified ports. However the only inbound port I have had to open so far is port 83 for my RDweb. I'm not complaining, but I'm just a bit surprised because I'm sure AD uses a load of ports to replicate etc.. I was expecting to see a ton of erros in the eventvwr... but nothing... just info messages no warnings. I said yes to Exempt ICMP from ipsec but I found that clients can ping servers but servers cant ping the clients??.. a bit confused..
  5. Hi I have a few questions about sites and services etc. Here is what I am about to do.... 1. Set up a VPN between my branch office and the main site. the main site ip / subnet is: 192.168.x.x /16 2. Join a server at the branch office to the domain over the WAN VPN I then promote it as a DC and add DHCP , DNS etc.. the ip / subnet is: 192.168.x.x /16 (Same as the main office) I could change this to a different subnet if required.. My questions are: if I created a site called Branch office in sites and services at the head office, what type of link would I use? I want the computers at both sites to be able to communicate with eachother, ping / intranet etc and allow users to log in using their AD credentials at the branch office. how would I instruct the computers in the branch office to use ONLY the DC that is located in the branch office and not the head office ones? Do the computers need to be added to a site specific OU? THIS is where im getting slightly confused because once I add my branch office PC's to the domain what is stopping them from going through the VPN gateway and getting their DHCP and DNS from the head office.. and ofcourse I also do not want head office PC's trying to log in using the branch DC as that would be slow.. would really appreciate a bit of advice here as the Microsoft docs are a bit confusing when trying to explain sites and services to my small brain. Thanks in advance.
  6. Thanks guys yes its a domain PC.. I've never seen this problem before.
  7. Hi, recently I have noticed something quite strange on my PC. I have a roaming profile however I don't log in anywhere else. when I log in to my office PC it all works fine, occasionaly I decided to clear out old files / icons etc... anyway a few days later I will log in and all my old stuff that I cleared out re-appears?!!! how weird... The eventvwr application log is clear... execept for one error that says: Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected. I don't think that's anything to do with it though... the computer seems to run ok, profile loads in a reasonable time.. I have never seen this problem before, anybody else?
  8. Its ok now. I just cleared all the warnings in the eventvwr now it runs fine.
  9. 64bit is better and dont let anybody say it ain't its especially better in a domain environment and I've managed 2 second logins which is unheard of! the only thing to watch out for if you are working in a domain enviroment is "PRINTERS"!!!! thats where the headache is ))
  10. Hi I have installed Sharepoint 2010 on my server because I wanted to trial it as a possible replacement for our crap VLE. anyway one thing I have noticed is that the pages are very slow to load... too slow . the Server has about 12Gig of RAM and a half decent processor... and nobody is using sharepoint because I'm the only one who knows its installed. the server does function as a TS remoteapp server.. but that's not really heavily used though. I heard something about a warm up script in IIS.. but didn't think that was the same problem as what I'm seeing. any ideas anyone?
  11. When a user logs in to the XP they get the Luna msstyles bar and not the classic on. Yes they have logged into both XP and W7 PC's
  12. Recently all of a sudden at one site when a standard user logs into a windows 7 pc (mixed xp / w7 environment) they are greeted with the ugly windows 95 classic task bar and not the aero one! obviously they cannot change it because the display settings are restricted. if i log in as an administrator then its back to the aero style! To make things even more weird 2 users (same ou/ polices etc) get the aero theme... I've checked the group polices and compared them to the other site DC which doesn't have this problem and I cannot see any differences in policies. users are roaming and they log into both xp and windows 7 computers on the 2003 domain... does anybody know whats going on, it's really annoying me now. Just to add: I have tried removing the users roaming profiles / app data / local and network folders etc...no luck..
  13. Try running a repair or try running malicious removal tool from microsoft

  15. Even though the driver was exactly the same as the one on the original image I decided to go to the Nvidia site and download a new driver. works now! Strange.
  16. Hi I have a really annoying problem that I can't seem to get my head around. I have a windows 7 PC which is on our network and it works just fine. I created an image of this PC and reimaged another PC (Same hardware, model) The annoying thing is that when I boot from cold I just get a black screen with a cursor... I have to hold the power button down until the PC goes off and switch on again and it then works and gets to the login screen. I just don't understand why this is happening.. it's exactly the same computer... I tried running a repair on it but same problem persists. Is it something to do with the imaging of the computer that is identical? I didn't sysprep it but I have a volume licence so didn't think that would really matter... I do this with XP pc's often. Anybody seen this problem and any fix for it? Also just to add that if I boot into safe mode it works every time.
  17. I know this isn't the topic section but I couldn't find one. Just was wondering if any experts here would know why when I change a storage quota for a user in exchchange it takes so long fo the setting to take effect? Sometimes I get fed up with waiting and reboot the mail server to get the change to work. Thanks
  18. I am going to upgrade my domain from 2003 32bit to 2008r2. a server on the domain holds all the roles and is running 2003 32bit. The first thing I need to do is run adprep /forest / domain etc. Am I right in thinking that I run the adprep.exe from the 2008 r2 CD on my windows server 2003 that is currently holding the roles? Now do I obtain a 32bit version of adprep from the 2008 r2 CD ? Because I'm guessing the 64bit adprep.exe on the 2008 CD won't run on the 2003 server? I'm planning to introduce a new 2008 r2 server onto the domain and then after I have done an adprep I would like to promote it to DC status.
  19. Hi I'm trying to set a file association for restricted users on a network. ftype ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash="C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" "%1" But this won't open the file when they double click on it! It's waiting for a file name.. Is there anyway I can make the association work with the file that is clicked on? I'm trying to put this in a batch file.
  20. Hi, I am currently integrating windows 7 PC's onto our 2003 domain (soon to be 2008) After a few scripts and loopbacks I'm more or less good except for one thing that I can't figure out. When I deploy Software via group policy to XP machines it has a helpful message during the start up process of the PC which says "Applying Software Installation settings" so then I know why the PC is taking so long to start up. But with Windows 7 it just says "Please wait"...... so while its deploying Photoshop the user is just thinking to themselves "Blimey this PC is running like s!##t .. Is there anyway to have the classic startup interface? Thanks
  21. I'm trying to understand what I should do first to get my VLAN up and running. Scenario Multiple Netgear managed switches through out the building (Some stacked). Multiple Wirless AP's connected to the network Domain Task I want to create a VLAN and plug one of my AP's to it. Problem ------- What VLAN should I create? How would the DHCP Situation work? Would the VLAN cut that port off the main network? How would a user gain access to the wireless network if the gateway is on the main network subnet? I'm trying to achieve a secure virtual network that wirless laptops connect to and don't have the ability to ping or connect to any of our domain servers. but the Internet gateway is on the main subnet and I don't want to mess that up. Do I need to create a PORT vlan and do some kind of route? An example would be great if anyone knows of a similar situation thanks
  22. yep just sysprep it and boot something like symantic ghost. Take the image and then burn it to the other PC's.... also just to say that the sid thing doesnt really cause any probs that I have experienced except with wsus so if they are legit PC's without product keys then you prob can do without the sysprep part (just make sure that the computer names are different) and perhaps do a ipconfig /flushdns.... anyway there is a fix for the sid wsus problem and also a fix to change the sid later on... symantic ghost is easy to use and dead simple.. you can probably get a trial that allows you 30 days usage. netbootdisk.com can get you the drivers you need. if you dont have a floppy drive you can get an iso or just buy and external floppy drive... choice is yours. on the server side install the symantec ghost server and set up a new image give it a session name ( wait fo the client to connect) . once you are into the client by booting dos to the network... map the share that ghost.exe is located in (type at the prompt: net use * \\servername\share) making sure you have ntfs rights to that share on the server ( or Just share the folder that will contain the image to everyone).. and then type at the prompt: CD *drive letter you have just mapped ** eg.. cd U: once you are on the correct drive simply type: ghost.exe.. Do a unicast and type the session name in.. that should do it. PS... if the PC's are very modern and have the latest hard disks in them you might hit probs with ghost.exe... to avoid this issue just type at the prompt ghost -wd -ws (This ignores any errors) and ghost works a treat. I'm quite good with symantic ghost so if you need some more help let me know..
  23. Hi I have an issue that has only started happening recently. Whenever I reboot my Windows Server 2008 R2 PC that hosts RDWEB TS , when a user tries to connect they get a page is unavailable I even tried to connect on the Server as the administrator and I get the same page unavailable message. I clicked on the diagnose the problem and it said error 401 security issue.... But... I found If I remove the bindings for the https and then re-enter the bindings and add the certificate .. the site all of a sudden starts working again... My question is why do I have to do this everytime the server restarts? Just doesn't make any sense. The only thing that I changed recently was that I downloaded a new certificate to the server for the RDWEB so that it could be opened securely. Thanks
  24. Well I have just noticed that the issue occurs on windows 7... strange vista and 2008 don't seem to have the problem.
  25. Hi I don't know if this is the right forum to ask this but I have an issue with TS web apps which I can't find a solution: I use TS web apps which is registered as : ts.mydomain.com I have a registered a godaddy certificate with the SAN ts.mydomain.com The certificate appears to be fine on Vista / 2008 clients and web apps works a charm. but on the XP clients when the user connects to an application they get a message that says i have the wrong certificate and it seems to think that the certificate should be for the server and not ts.mydomain.com ??? : if they click proceed it works fine but I just was wondering if there is a solution to this? the certificate error says that is for the server fqdn myserver I think its some kind of authentication problem but I don't know what to do next? Do I have to register the server name as well in my certificate and then reinstall the certificate?
