I really like that computer ... this is my 2nd one ... my first one went bad but I found almost a "new" one for sale on ebay, price wasn't bad, so I got myself a nice replacement ... You could do a Ghost right after you install Win 98SE and the above updates and then another one later on when you finally get your machine just the way you want it .... then if you would mess something up ... you wouldn't have to start all over again installing Win 98SE ... just start with the updates already installed. ... just adding my experience with this new flash version (Flash 9.0.159.0). I use Windows 98SE with IE6SP1 and everything installs just fine. I install right over the last version (Flash 9.0.151.0) and there are no problems. I think I read at Adobe somewhere that you can install a newer version right over an older one, can't be absolutely sure at this time. Here are two "Flash Player version check" web sites .... the first site is Adobe and there you can also go into settings to shut off the auto update and/or other stuff ... Settings Manager under the Support tab on the right side. ... Actually, I didn't fail to mention the other viewers. I had no interest in them, only PowerPoint Viewer 2003 ... I had a .pps file and when I researched how to open it, I found out about that particular viewer and that it worked with Win 98SE and would open the file for me. I can say that PP Viewer 2003 does work with Win 98SE but I can't say anything about the others ... I seem to remember some other viewers but if Win 98 isn't listed to work with them then I passed. However, since they are also going away, I will probably download them to have them stored on a CD ... just in case! I have only run into a .pps file once, maybe twice in 5 years.

starcraftmaster .... have been using that ZA version (4.5.594.000) for years with Win 98SE and it seems to be 100% OK with it ... However, with a newer OS version (XP, Vista) I'm sure a newer firewall would be better in today's world. I have never really tried it with anything else. Windows 98SE rocks for me and so does that ZA version. I have tried Kerio v2.1.5 at various times and just a few days ago I gave it another shot ... It seems like a good firewall but I still can't figure out all the settings and rule sets ... I have downloaded default rulesets and "easy how to setups" for Dummies but it seems to be over my head. The older ZA version does a good job with easy setup ... at least for me. I have an older computer with Win 98SE on it and I will continue to work with Kerio v2.1.5 ... I mainly use it for software testing only ... it's only a Pentium ... slow but good for Win 98SE testing.

just wanted to add my 2 cents about backups. After reading about the "Second Chance" program, I searched and found a copy earlier in the year. I tried it 3 times and ended up deciding not to use it. It would eventually freeze up on me it seems. I figured out one problem ... it likes to do one daily backup ... I think it sets a time for 8am ... if you are on the internet or active on your computer I seem to remember that the whole system might freeze up (Win 98SE) ... I set the "backup time" to 3am or when I turn on my computer. I liked the program and may try it out again ... It's been several months. I now use Ghost 8.3 as a good "life saver" ... I have 4 notebook computers (all Win 98SE) and have a current Ghost backup cd from Nov for each one ... outside of a few updates ... CCleaner, MS Money and etc , this does work for me although a good system restore program would be nice. ... just wanted to add, that one reason Ghost works so good with Win 98SE is the fact that most of the programs/software are the "last versions" so you get everything set up the way you want it ... all your settings, sounds and software ... then do a System file check, clean out the junk, clean the registry, do a Scandisk and Defrag and whatever else you can think of ... install the latest Host file or whatever and then do the Ghost backup. If you mess up or your hard drive goes bad ... in less than 10 minutes you can have Win 98SE installed again just the way you like it. ... another 10 minutes to update the Host file, CCleaner and anything else that might change ... it's makes for a quick "system restore" since so much Win 98SE software is in the "last version" stage anyway. ... should be less than 30 minutes for a new "setup". ...

... this may be of some help concerning the USB not working. About 2 years ago I was given an older desktop computer system to use as a "testing" system for Win 98SE software. Anyway, that's what I use it for so I don't mess my laptop up. However, the USB didn't work ... I researched this on Google and someone mentioned about going into the BIOS and changing a setting for USB. I did this and the USB was then working ... someone may know more about this and you can try to check that out ... that might get the USB working.

... yes, I noticed that also about the F-Secure Rescue CD ... after I got them all downloaded and burned to a CD. I didn't see that option on the other 3... might be there as a manual thing. I wasn't connected to the internet when I tried the F-Secure cd ... I still plan to download the Kaspersky RescueDisk next week and check it out. Maybe I will keep those 2 handy for future use. I take it, you updated the F-Secure and had no problems with it.

.... the download for Acrobat Reader 5.05 is 8.6 MB and Foxit Reader 1.3 is listed as 1.20 MB ... but whatever, here's a link to that version and other versions of Acrobat Reader. I like "the smaller, the better" if it does the same job as other readers. I used to use A Reader 5.05 till the Foxit 1.3 version came out. It was mostly dealing with the Windows 98SE OS .... a good chance other 98SE people would or will miss it completely in the future ... myself, I pretty much stay with the 9x and 98SE postings. Dude111 .... yes, you are right about that link "not" working anymore. It did work when I posted the earlier message. It has worked for well over a year. Maybe it is only temporary or maybe ZoneAlarm shut it down because of increased traffic for that "older" version. Who knows ... ... I have never tried that version on a "newer" OS ... it may work perfect on a newer OS, I am strictly a "modern day" Windows 98SE person ... meaning I keep up with all MDGx updates and other programs that people mention that sound interesting for 98SE. .... I remember back when ZoneAlarm started to make some drastic changes in their program .... after the v4.5.594.000 ... people were complaining about all kinds of problems ... it was slow, it didn't work, it was bloated ... they went through one version very fast and started a newer version number very fast to answer some of the complaints. I had read some time back (Google) when I was doing some firewall research that many people liked this older version of ZoneAlarm since it was sort of the last version of a "pure" ZoneAlarm firewall before they started to fool around with it. Also, if I remember ZoneAlarm was bought out somewhere after that version came out and we know what can happen when a company, who has a nice program, changes hands .... things usually go downhill with add-ons and bloat. As for the newer versions of ZoneAlarm, maybe they are perfect for XP and Vista ... hopefully I will never know ... as long as we have MDGx, herbalist, Charlotte, and so many others, including you ... working to keep Win 98SE humming along in the new century. ... it's not perfect, never was completely perfect ... but considering the alternative ... well, ! ..... thanks for posting the new link to v4.5.594.000 ... maybe the old one will work again or it might be gone for good ... ZA could be working on their site over the holiday or perhaps they were "alarmed" at all the interest in an older version of ZoneAlarm .... Who can say ... *** I was checking the number of "reads" on this firewall topic ... over 400 ... if 50% of those people decided to download that version, either to try it or just put a copy away .... the page might be gone for good.

.... I thought I had better give more info on the version of Memload I am talking about ... I did a Google search and found another version of something with the same name ... the version for 98SE is Memload v2.0 (July 2001) ... it is only 28 KB in size ... After several dead links I found a link in a foreign language that has the download. ... http://nosetup.org/programa/59 ..... in the Description top part click on "Descarga" .... that is still a good download link and that is Memload. .... grab it while you can .... you can check all active running programs or compare one program version against another to check resources. May not be all that important but it can be interesting to see how many resources a program uses. What language is that ? ... Spanish ?? Hope this is helpful.

I never heard of that firewall and will experiment with it, if it isn't too complicated setting it up. ... yeah, maybe that guy's computer was all messed up to begin with .... I didn't find anymore complaints ... I will check the resources used with Memload ... neat little program that works with Win 98SE .... gives you a reading on all programs running so you can see what uses what! Hard to find a download link these days but there are a few around.

... I use an older version of ZoneAlarm ... before all the bloated and resource hog versions started. If you use Memload you can check the various firewalls ... I think this version was as good as Kerio 2.1.5 on resources. Works great on Windows 98SE and easy to get going "out of the box". I have the PRO version but the free version is just as good: ZoneAlarm v4.5.594.000 .... the download link at ZoneAlarm still works ... wouldn't be a bad idea to download a copy and put it away somewhere to have for the future, if you decide one day to check it out. I can't say if it would work "very well" on a newer OS but for Windows 98SE, it's great.
