  1. Well they've been busy in the week leading up to Christmas over at the Redmond campus, since patch Tuesday the following updates have become available. At \Hotfix (critical zero day Internet Explorer remote code execution exploit fix): # ▼ 680-IE7-WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB960714-x64-ENU.exe [8,686,968] At \RunOnce (.Net Framework 3.5 Service Pack 2 wannabe): % ▼ NDP20SP2-KB958481-x64.exe [19,282,272] MD5: 37CD8D927566FCABF4DFFCBBE63D16EF SHA1: 1392380EF7BAABD531F35EE5799C255A03B0DCBE % ▼ NDP30SP2-KB958483-x64.exe [17,262,944] MD5: 6B08400F889D7004E705363530C83E32 SHA1: 84062CF4C3F303F3641E3F730F60FDEA51BC776F % ▼ NDP35SP1-KB958484-x64.exe [1,472,352] MD5: 94E97AC8F788252BFF2704859CB5C737 SHA1: E69006433C1006C53DA651914DC8162BBDD80D41 So apart from putting out a real .Net 3.5 sp2 (and for goodness sake, drop Itanium support from the package, anyone who has one should know enough to download a separate package) they also need to put out service pack 1 for: IE7 (installer=28.2MB, patches=45.1MB) & WMP11 (16 patches according to Boooggy's list).
  2. I decided to take another look at getting my bling on under a limited account (post 206/208). It seems that the only problem lies in the fact that some necessary files are installed into the profile of the administrator that installed Vistapack (only tested under W2K). It's pretty easy for another Administrator class account to get all the pretty effects, one only has to execute the following command (after installing, before rebooting): Copy "%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\Vistapack\Vistapack.lnk" "%AllUsersProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\" Which makes the program link available to all users. To get it to work for a limited account, one first has to install SubInACL to %SystemRoot%, then execute the following command (after installing, before rebooting): SubInACL /file "%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Temp\Refresher.exe" /grant=everyone=r Which gives everyone read access to Refresher.exe. SubInACL is an great utility as it makes it feasible to run as a limited user, see here (for W2K get the files from this post). When you login to a new, unblinged (is that a word?) account, it will have the standard W2K look and feel, but when you run Vistapack it will say that the effects are already applied. No problem, just uninstall and reinstall the effects you want (I like all but Tbar personally). The only problem I have now is the AutoIt error on silent install.
  3. Hentai = Japanese for perverted (rough translation). The first thing I do when reinstalling Windows on other people's computers is run a malware scan on their hard drive. On one friend's computer it took over half an hour to go through a folder named "Hentai". So when I rebuilt the OS I scheduled a task to play that song on every startup.
  4. nLite is not allowing you to access your Hentai, unforgivable! As we all know .More seriously, read this guide. IE7 hotfixes will integrate BUT you have to make sure that the original IE7 installer is above them on the list. 5eraph maintains an update pack over at the RyanVM forums (not yet updated for December). Unfortunately you will encounter problems with nLiteing a x64 install media on a x32 platform.
  5. WMP 6.4 is part of the default installation, hence the update is viewed as required. I suspect it is there mainly for compatibility reasons, although it's possible that other components call upon it in a manner invisible to the user. Side note: WMP 6.4 is also the basis for the popular Media Player Classic.

  8. With the recent update to CIS 3.5.55810.432, Comodo has rearranged their webpages in such a way that one cannot navigate to a page with a link to the older, Firewall only, versions. Direct links to the older, firewall only installers: CFP_Setup_English_2.4.18.184.exe (for Windows 2000) CFP_Setup_3.0.25.378_XP_Vista_x32.exe CFP_Setup_3.0.25.378_XP_Vista_x64.exe
  9. Added support for automatic installation of Comodo Firewall: I recommend using Comodo Firewall (older 2.4.18.184 version), small, top-rated and free, unfortunately their installer doesn't allow for an unattended installation. However I've written an AutoIt script (my 1st) that will silently install it, available at my eSnips page, rename it to "Comodo2.exe" and place it at \AddOns along with the actual firewall installer.
  10. I know you can't install it from a non-admin account, I'm not quite as stupid as I look (close but not quite). What I want to be able to do is use the VistaPack effects from a non-admin account once it is installed. Even if that is not possible, I think it would be better if the start menu shortcuts were created in the AllUsers profile so that administrators other than the one that installed it can get their bling on.
  11. At a guess, you list XP Media Centre edition as your OS, you cannot execute this guide under XP MCE as it is a 32-bit operating system. You need to execute it under XP Pro x64 or Vista x64.
  12. Re previous post: Installing under Windows 2000 using the /S switch results in an AutoIt error, something about a missing line. More importantly, it doesn't work with limited user accounts. It appears that some needed files are written to the profile of the administrator that installed VistaPack which limited account users do not have permission to access.

  14. 2 things: Will the first post heading be updated? But more importantly are there any command line switches for the installer and/or the installed program? EDIT: I tried the /S switch under W2K but it throws up an AutoIt error (some missing line?).

Sun's page with silent install instructions is here, but as you can see it doesn't go into great depth. AmdM: Unless otherwise noted, just place the original installer file at \AddOns for those applications that are supported. You can use the various addon .cab files that others have made (very useful for those programs without decent silent install options), but you will have to extract the actual executable and place that at \AddOns while adding the installation command (from entries*.ini within the .cab file) to Run*_XP-64.bat.
  16. Momentarily these are still current, but according to the security patch advance notification, they will be replaced this coming Tuesday. KB943055 is still required.
  17. Um, you do know that the K-Lite codec packs have a built-in ability to create a silent install script, right?
  18. I would recommend that the current version of CIS not be used on production machines, at least for now. I updated from v3.0.25.378 to v3.5.54375.427 via the firewall's built-in update mechanism, once I'd rebooted the system it would BSOD within 5 minutes of logging on. I had to boot into safe mode and remove it and then reinstall the older (and stable) v3.0.25.378 firewall. You can still get the older (but no longer supported) v3.0.25.378 firewall from: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/dow...d_firewall.html
  19. That may be what he meant, but it's not what he said, the original article didn't specify that the nLite section only applied to NT5.x versions of Windows. However that doesn't change the fact that VirtualBox doesn't support Win9x with Virtual Machine Additions, making it a sucky choice if you want to virtualize the old 98se.
  20. PCLinuxOS Magazine Article describes setting up a nLited XP within VirtualBox on a Linux host, good idea for an article but it damages it's credibility when in the first section it states: Leaving aside that nLite doesn't work on Win9x or Vista, VirtualBox does not offer Virtual Machine additions for Win9x.
  21. Will your old laptop boot off your nLited CD? Will your new laptop boot off an original XP x64 CD? If the answer to both of these questions is yes, then you may be integrating an incorrect mass storage driver (had a similar problem, drove me nuts till I figured it out).

  23. Integration failure: WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB956391-x64-ENU.exe (Cumulative Security Update for ActiveX Killbits) appears to integrate successfully but still shows on windows update. Silent install method works (WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB956391-x64-ENU.exe /Passive /NoRestart).
  24. As you yourself have discovered, KB956391 doesn't integrate properly under nLite, hence the silent install at RunOnce. It's less than a MB so you're not losing any significant space (not like you'd be using a CD as the install media anyway). I'm off to do an RMware install (consists of put DVD in PC, go watch another DVD).
