The best practise is using DHCP to provide static IP, also called locked... Then U can create PC name from IP (for example 172.16.1.38 will be PC138) and associate them with software list. I created this once for one school, where software is installed to computers by their class position and day of way, so there is only software needed for next day lessons.

IMHO on NIC... BTW better solution for your problem is to install software by computer name... Do U have static DHCP?

Few recommendations: For immunization: 1.) Use BugOff first. 2.) Use blocklist.reg from SpywareGuide 3.) Use SpyIE-ad 4.) Disable scripting in WMP 5.) Download SpywareBlaster (U can use also SpywareGuard, but it is almost useless because of problems with laws) 6.) Download MSAS 7.) Run AutoUpdate frequently! 8.) If U want to be really safe, use DropRights from Microsoft and run email and browser under less priviledged account (U can switch to less powerfull account without needing to input password). Or use any other product that is using XP/W2k3 technology SAFER 9.) Use XP SP2, it is greatly increasing the security against spyware (MK, LockDown and few other technologies) For cleaning: 1.) Well, just think about it - what is the biggest security problem of Microsoft? It is not that they are not able to program good code. It is not that architecture of OS is unsecure. The biggest problem is backward compatibility - releasing w9x was worst mistake professional company could do. Concept of object, activex objects, powerfull user accounts etc. isnt just something that fits to my personal view of security. Because of this microsoft created .NET Framework - it is great, secure, easy to learn etc. And IE7 will be based on .NET, so I think it will be great jump forward. And that is why I cant agree with Argon - U can create it independently and still maintain compact, just look at longhorns Monad
