Are you trying to slipstream IE6 AND use FDV's fileset? I'm afraid you gotta do one or the other, not both.
-
Martin - Thanks for pointing out the dx7 error. The page was just sent to FDV a few moments ago. I do not run the updates with virtual machines, I just update the lists and wait for complaints. If complaints roll in, then a script update has to be implemented (i.e. a new beta). Maintaining the lists is key because it shows the basic file/folder structure for hfslip to work right. Most noobs can't seem to get that. For now, maintaining hfslip and lists takes a few irreplaceable hours of my life each month to do a thankless and non-paying job. One thing particularly aggrivating is when I see the occasional posts by people who continually click refresh on their browswer on patch tuesdays. Once they see that the msft website lists updates, they put the hotfix hyperlinks on this thread. Maybe they are trying to be a hero or something. Anyone can visit msft and pick up the updates. One thing that is good about this thread is when there is some sort of IE8 compatibility hotfix that arises. The msft hotfix page typically does not list them. Actually anyone with disposable time on their hands can maintain update lists. I'm kind of running out of disposable time these days. Lots of people said they'd help, nobody said they'd do.

@Martin - The header name of the column was deleted on purpose. It's easier for me to maintain lists this way. To make life easier, the files at the bottom are the most recently deleted. Actually I do not want to maintain lists anymore... so things may not be pretty anymore.

It would be easier to use the stickied hotfix page on this forum. The one one tomcat's page is outdated and obsoleted. Once tomcat returns, maybe he can update the page on the hfslip website. Until then, use the stickied post for the latest updates. I try to update it on patch tuesdays and revisit it when someone brings up an oddity.

Copy of the i386 folder on the hard drive?
tommyp replied to spinjector's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Please refrain from asking general OS question in the hfslip forum. There are other forums dedicated to general OS Q's & A's. Thanks. Moved -
Doesn't sound like a hotfix slipstreamer to me. Please ask in the appropriate forum. Moved

Install it from a cd and you'll be OK.
-
Do you see the "missing" files in the sourcess\i386 folder and/or on the burned CD? It could be as easy as a bad burn.
-
Is your file named hfanswer.ini? Or hfanswer.ini.txt? The file should be located in hftools, but you probably knew that anyway.
-
The 2 byte identification sp3 file is normal and intended. Msft has been putting sp# filenames at the root directory of install CDs since w2k. When you slipstream a service pack with hfslip, it gets slipstreamed into the source folder.

For starters, you should bump your list of hotfixes with the stickied post in this forum. For example, I see WMP11 updates, but not the WMP11 installer. Also, there are two similar files: windowsmedia11-kb929399-v2-x86-intl (1).exe and windowsmedia11-kb929399-v2-x86-intl.exe. After you can verify that all your HF files are correct, rerun the script. I suppose you *could* have a bad/broken hotfix file downloaded too, but that's beyond the scope of this forum.

Thanks LonFarGon and welcome to the board. So, does this mean that the update supercedes something else? Or is it supposed to be used in tandem with MS08-032? One sentence says that it doesn't supercede the cumulative activex rollup, and another sentense says if you install the 969898 update then you don't need MS08-032. My vote is that the new one replaces the old. Now I know why they are dropping support for 2000 soon, they can't even get a lousy KB article clear.

Do you mean before the desktop or after? You can set a cmd file to launch via the winnt.sif file. But if you are into making an unattended installation disk, you are better off asking in the unattended installation forum.
-
I'll declassify it from junk status in the next go around.

I don't see the usp5 in your HF list. The filename should be something along the lines of w2ksp5. Are you installing usp5 after the fact? Or was it pre-slipstreamed? If it's the latter, you should really use a virgin source and let hfslip slipstream it for you instead.

You may want to consider adding in the msxml updates to your list. Are you 100% sure that it's not the addons that are doing something funny? On a sidenote, sometimes you really can't believe WU. MSFT makes mistakes in their filechecking routine. You can also verify with the microsoft baseline analyzer or hfnetchk.

Timestamps of the new files will be the date that hfslip is run. I took a look at your hotfixes, it seems that you are mixing and matching various things and it's not being done correctly. May I suggest that you visit the hotfix stickied post in this forum. Oh, IE6 won't slipstream via hfslip because you do not have the ie6 cabs present in hfcabs. You should doublecheck all that you have populated and fix the errors.

Thanks for the inputs. Updated update list was just sent for hosting.
-
Martin, I just updated the list and sent off to FDV for hosting. The hotfix you mention is one of those server ones, or if IIS is installed. It will work in HF. The MS article says that it affects XP too, but nobody made a stink about it yet. lol

It's easier to diagnose if you attached a zipped hfslip.log file.

It's possible to do use hfnetchk on a VM. I still use the commandline version through a batch file. It's nice to be able to run a quick batch on my host OS to see what I need. There's absolutely no need for IE or any webbrowsers to identify what hotfixes are missing. If you were to run hfnetcheck on a VM, you gotta compile the various flavors of OS's and different verions of IE and then organize it all into a list. For me, I generated an automated spreadsheet where I just insert rows or move rows. Formatting the spreadsheet was interesting, but I was able to make excel generate the HTML file that FDV hosts. Updating the lists takes about an hour of my time a month. Honestly, I can find a million of other things to do than do update lists. People offer to help with lists, but "help" posts such as the one by Shardis really don't help me, actually posts like that annoy me. Hotfixwise - what replaces what and what is new is all in the link of the very first message on this thread. For example, all of June's hotfixes are all posted as June 9th. Just open each June 9th KB article and get what you need, if it applies to your OS, or do what I do and go through each OS and copy/paste direct download links, maintain KB article numbers, enter severity, description/fix and I also enter the Security Bulletin number so it's easy to see what replaces what. Then make sure you do the same for all OS's and all flavors of IE. Maybe one of these days someone else will maintain this before I call it quits.

Crash - Doing the hfnetchk is good for the host OS. If someone is populating an HF folder from scratch, they'd need lists. Personally I use the hfnetchk on my host OS and update accordingly. Nobody wants to step up to the plate and generate HF lists, so I'm the stucky. I'd rather be doing real life instead of this actually.

Most xp users are using ie8 nowadays. I can't be much help other than to rename your folder from "_" to something with letters instead. Perhaps running ie7 slipstream on a 2k host is a limitation? I don't know.

Welcome to the forum. Please re-read the first post, unless you want to maintain XP hotfix lists. It will be one less thing for me to do so I can do real life instead.
