  3. I have been getting conflicting readings from the bios and of the front panel of case when it comes to temperature reading of the CPU. The panel reading; numbers are broken up and the bios reports a 97C reading. I can give possible rough readings but am looking for a more accurate reading of what the CPU really is running at. I know it isn't 97C because I would be having bonfires in my room or cooking weenies by stick. I have been trying out a handful of software, Speedfan, mbm5, freshdiagnose, Sandra and they are all good but do not give a temperature reading of the CPU on my system. mbm5 doesn't appear to support my board so I hesitated installing it until they have an update. Freshdiagnose does tell me at least that I have an unsupported chipset and gives an error. Hmonitor just pukes with an exception when I start the program up, EPriviledge exception. Nothing in their faqs about this error and all I could find in Google is a lot of programmers coding for that type of exception in Delphi. My board is an intel d945GCCR, lga775 and CPU is an intel p4 631, 3.0ghz Cedar Mill brand. I have the bios update for 8/30/2007. I also did install the intel desktop utilities suite version of diagnostics but that to failed in reading temperature of the CPU. Field areas were blanked. I have a sensor connected to the heatsink so I should be able to get a reading of some sort by software? The front panel on my case shows me this:: lool. But according to the thermometer in the left inside the display, I am probably ok. I can however get the temp reading from my hard disk through HDtune, lol, anything else who knows. Hard drive is displaying 87F Is there anything I missed here? I keep verifying the cpu sensor is connected and it is.

  5. When I moved from windows 98, used it from when I first got my computer back on November 24th 1999 to April 27th 2007, then to 2000 then XP, I always ran, and still run, as admin. Well, 98 it isn't a choice really since you are admin when just you but 98 can be plugged up and not many of the stuff affects it as much as the later systems. For years I have run in admin modes and I haven't gotten hit by anything. Maybe once in a blue moon a script from a website that got owned will nab me but otherwise I scan check everything and block what I don't need or want and am alert for anything that might happen. I don't click on suspicious mails or sites. I'm use to this way of working. When I started out yeah I was clicking everything and didn't know what a firewall was at all, nor about security. Heck, it took me half an hour to figure out how to log on to AOL. The sign in button was right in front of me but I kept thinking why do I have to do this when I already did sign up for the service, duh. One time a guy said he could color correct my AOL profile picture if I sent it his way. Instead I sent him the adobe 4.0 program's exe file which came with the compaq. Those were fun times, lol.
  6. Newegg, Zipzoomfly, Amazon and buy.com Amazon has customer reviews and epinions.com is good for reviews to. There are some exceptions to where I will buy at <gasp> Wally world. I don't do that unless I really need something in like the same day, like the DVD writer I bought there today. Online it would had been 32.00 but I paid 45.00+ at Wally world for the same item. Had to have it quickly. If it breaks I'll just return it.
  7. Yes I found out the problem with the install. I was hitting the F keys in case I should get an error. I didn't have to do this, I felt stupid at the time to So I restarted over and just let the thing go untouched and the install went smoothly. Since I have the hardware installed I'm curious to see how Ubuntu would act with it. I'll try this out soon. Veri$on was a pain to get going. The automator software kept detecting that I didn't have a nic card, or that the service was offline, or some other problem. I had to restart the installer and activation about 20 times before it worked, took hours. I also had to use my older modem, the old Bell atlantic. My Zoom modem, one I bought, didn't seem to be found by windows and/or Veri$on. There aren't any firmwares at Zoom's site or fixes so I don't know what the problem was. They probably want you to use their modems. Wouldn't surprise me if this was the case. Their modems are ok I guess but they rip you off with the markup of 100% to make the profit, typically $100.00 for a little black westell box, lol. The CPU is acting normally and appears to be in the normal temp range. The hard drive monitor I'm using is showing my drive at 87F. I did download intel desktop utilities but uninstalled it. It couldn't read certain parts of the computer though it was compatible with the type of board I have, some fields were blank. I tried looking at other CPU monitor software but I haven't found one yet that supports my board. According to the sensor reading on the front panel of the case I am at 27.6C
  8. Thanks fishman. I might get one of those down the line I was able to find a usb driver for the digital8. I had to dig for it online. I have heard that USB transfer is not advised for video though after installing the driver components and doing the transfer I didn't get any loss of quality and no dropped frames. I was able to do 29.97 fps with no problem. Could it be because my computer is fast enough to handle the load? The CPU barely budged at all throughout the process going to 6% max. Sample clip from the USB transfer 320X240. My server is slow in loading videos so it would be probably better to download them instead by right-clicking and saving: Jeffrey, my cat. http://rjschat.dyndns.org:8080/Up_close.wmv Jeffrey eating like a pig. I used too much noise cleaning on this one. First half normal video, other half in infrared nightshot mode: http://rjschat.dyndns.org:8080/hungry_man.wmv My server is sometimes slow since Veri$son has a cap on upload bandwidth.
  9. Very sorry to hear of your Mother passing. I wish you and your Dad well.
  10. The other two slots are a pci x1 and a x16 slot. I was checking the prices and these cards are more expensive than the regular pci ones. I'll have to decide whether or not to keep the audigy card in or replace it with the firewire card I do have. I won't be dealing with music that much, mainly voice, evp. I might be able to get away with the onboard sound.
  11. Nope, the black slot isn't for a pci card. The instructions don't specify what it is for, a few items aren't documented in these instructions, lool. All it says is "No AGP" I found a usb port on my camera but I know for certain the Sony ccd-trv280 camera came with no software for connecting up the unit to a computer. XP doesn't recognize it. I went to Sony's site but all there was was a program that writes to the camera, reverse of what I want to do. I can either take out the audio card in place of the firewire card or get a pci-express card. The second pci card is for ethernet so I can't disconnect that one. The black slot is slightly longer than a pci slot by about a fraction of an inch. I'm still looking into what that slot is actually for.
  12. Is a pci-expressX16 slot backwards compatible with a regular pci card? Looks like I may need a firewire pci-express version if my existing firewire card, regular pci, isn't compatible. I found terminology of the types of cards but nothing on backwards compatibility, yet. The ultrabox microfly case has a firewire connection on the front panel but the board doesn't have any firewire capability on its own. Thanks.
  13. Lost an Uncle due to Cancer. Once it hit him he went fast. He worked for a company in the 70's and 80's that produced insulation containing asbestos. Back then there weren't as much OSHA concerns back then. One week he looks healthy, the next not. Doctors and the pharma are more into treatments and not cures. It's all about the money and it is a shame. I'm not being of much help here. I don't know what to say to you except that I can relate. Spend as much time as you can with your Mother and let her know you love her. I'm not a religious person but I do pray once in a while. I'll say a prayer for your Mother.
  14. in virtualdub frame rate processing in xvid is 101.9 frames per second. Holy crap! My old computer only could do 4-7 fps. Chip looks like it's at 27.2C
  15. I would like to thank those who had given suggestions and help in relation to a new computer I had been fumbling with. I have moved up from 1999 to the present and I am more than satisfied. I will at some point play around with Ubuntu more. I tried getting a few things in order like the internet to work but I wasn't able to reactivate my account with Veri$on through Ubuntu, nor could I connect because to have to reactivate. With verizon you need windows software and a branded IE browser for this to work that is embedded within the Veri$on software package. I had to get XP to do this. I couldn't get an emulator since I couldn't get online and I didn't find anything in any of the repositories. Ubuntu is a nice OS and from what I have played with, before putting XP in, I really do like it and believe it is capable and powerful in its own right. I can't believe how fast this computer is. Online videos actually play, lol. I won't be playing any hard core games, overclocking, or anything really extensive, just simple standard video processing at the most. Before: Compaq Presario 5822 System board socket 370 - Intel 2 - 500mghz, upgradable to 600mghz max Ram: 256MB, originally 96MB Video: 4MB Audio: 16 bit PC solo-1 After Ultrabox Microfly case Intel board d945gccr socket 775 Proc: 3.0ghz - intel 4 - 631, Cedar Mill Ram: 2GB Video: onboard, 128MB current setting Audio: Audigy 2
  16. Same here. Be safe and watch out for that eggnog
  17. Yes, Verizon uses winpoet, pppoe. I had a bell atlantic modem that I had since 2002 but it started having issues with timing where it would take many open and closes of the dialer to connect and sometimes I would get the 676 line is busy then I had to reboot. Instead I bought my own modem, a Zoom adsl 5615 ethernet. I told Verizon to stick their modem where the sun don't shine. They wanted like $100.00 for their kind. I paid half that with the Zoom and what's better is I can connect the phone directly at the modem instead of the wall. I was reading that Verizon has this reactivation scheme for existing users and this can be a major issue for linux users. Verizon doesn't support Linux, so they say. They seem to only accept their specially crafted IE6 browser that is included with their software and windows when going to their activation account page even if you try to spoof the UA of the browser to get to the accounts page they make it impossible. The old Verizon software was easy, just install and be done with it but no, even by installing the old software you won't get on. You have to use the the new software and go through a robotic intro voiced by someone who talks too slow. Voice can be disabled fortunately. The setup screen contains flash enabled windows that contain errors in them and through mouse-clicking the "next" button 5000 times finally gets you to the modem options selection page and after that you have to sign in to reactivate the account. I don't want to call them up either since whomever I call doesn't understand me or I don't understand them. One year someone crossed the lines in the building and for days my dsl was shifted to a resident on the first floor, I'm on the third. I kept getting phone calls from a Doctor asking for Kate to remind her about an appointment. I kept telling this guy that I'm not her. Kate's Mother also called me. I called Verizon and they said they detected I had a valid connection but they didn't comprehend what I was telling them about the odd calls. The first-floor resident picked up on it and somehow was able to get someone over to look over things. Lo-and-behold the wiring was fumbled. If it wasn't for her I don't know when I would had gotten reconnected. Some lady got free dsl for a couple of days while I got calls for Doctor appointment reminders and one very confused Mother, lol. Personally I am getting fed up with Verizon. They have also capped the speed once again. There is Comcast but my Mother had that and there were issues with it. The electrical here is probably unchanged since the 70's. Can't have dish or satellite in certain areas of the town/property per contract it looks like. Sucks when you can't allow competition to flourish.
  18. I thought I would try out Ubuntu since I was at my wits end with trying to get some form of windows on the new computer with no success at all. The Ubuntu install on the CD went flawlessly with no errors!! My hardware was picked up though there may need to be upgrades but if there is I don't notice it. The OS is clean and organized. Windows 2000 gave me an acpi not compliant error and XP will not install neither, it would copy files until it hit the 30 second mark and than freeze out. Ubuntu was the only OS I could install on my system. Now I got to experience how fast a modern computer can be/is wow wow wow. Moving up from 1999 specs. Programs opens very swift and almost instaneously especially openoffice I really like what I see with an alternative OS. The only thing I might run into knots with is the network and internet since I'm on Veri$on DSL, their software I highly doubt will work with it and they don't have any linux versions of it.
  19. Well, got the new western digital drive, formatted, and tried to cleanly put win2000 on and whamo, blue screen with the ACPI error again. I tried the skip and the manual method for choosing standard computer to override the ACPI issue but the computer just stops dead at the "Starting the windows 20000 setup" screen. I guess the XP last resort will be the only thing to try next. Are the install files in XP different than win2000? I'm afraid of going through the expense of getting XP and having the same ACPI error blue screen deal. Lastly, are there any dos-based partition program that will recognize an 80GB harddrive? I have tried fdisk and some other utility and it reads the drive as 74.36GB but only recognizes 10GB when going to the format process. This is nuts. I didn't think putting this system together would be so difficult
  20. Hmmm didn't notice any plastic film for removal, nor is it in the instruction booklet that any plastic film exists. Unless what I have is different? Stock intel fan. How often should you replace the grease coating or the pads? Would actual tubed grease be better? Cleaning looks like it's going to be fun down the road, lol.
  21. Yep, lol. I know this now I just ran pc inspector recovery on the recovered harddrive and was able to retrieve some files back!! I held off putting too much onto the disk so I was debating whether or not to run it or forget about it. I had some stuff that I could had gotten back anyway but I decided to run the recovery and wow. I found out that with wave files it is best to use fat1 or fat2 recovery and the "no fat - consecutive" option otherwise the wave files don't recover right. This applies to VB6 project files it looks like. I was able to fully recover my rss project. If the project doesn't open I can at least copy the insides and make new files from them. These recovery programs aren't needed all the time but when needed and you don't immediately start writing too much to the drive, these things can be a lifesaver. I might need to include the win2k updates, merged, with the original win2k install. I don't know if I'll get the ACPI error again, doubt it since the harddrive I will try again with will be blank. I really was a die-hard 98 fan then went to 2000 April of this year because I was tired of seeing "This program is no longer compatible". I would prefer to keep 2000 but would go to XP as a last resort.
  22. I updated the bios with the iFlash DOS utility during my fiddling around. The bios screen still displays 97C but the thermal probe seems to be reading somewhere in the 30's C region. Can't tell because of the incomplete numbers on the display but the little thermometer graphic is showing slightly below half way. 97C = 206.6F, looool. I think it's a false reading. I Haven't seen, smelled any smoke and I haven't blown up yet so I think I'm safe.
  23. Processor is an intel p4 631, 3.0GHZ, Cedar mill Motherboard is an intel D945GCCR, lga775
  24. I have come to the realization that I will be getting a secondary hard drive and possibly XP. The new system's only hope is that a clean drive will be able to remedy the ACPI issue. I have played with the power setup in bios enabling/disable and then setting things back to defaults. I have tried bios flashes and board updates to the extremes such as physically removing and replacing back HAL compnents through command line. Hitting F7 disables ACPI from being implemented during a reinstall of windows 2000 which shows up as an install/upgrade option. Problem is, MS and intel don't outline what to do in the event that a recovery cannot take place and just hangs. After the F7 deal, or f5 for manually selecting computer types, things should had been good to go. The intel and MS instructions should have worked but for some reason it would not. Before trying again I flashed the board with a new bios and afterward reverted back. Same problem with the blue screen error of ACPI compliancy. The original harddrive eventually got corrupt in the latter part of the process and I had no other alternative but to do a fresh install of window 2000 on my older computer. Other than this the new system is indeed healthy and operational. I do thank all who have helped out and have given suggestions. Maybe that the new system needs a fresh, bare, drive in the first place with a fresh operating system? I'll be getting another western digital and not swap back and forth like I have been.
  25. Hey guys. It looks like the reading was false. The board was slightly warm but not hot. The thermal digital readout display has issues in that it doesn't display the digits right, they're kind of incomplete but the thermometer graphic on the display is slightly below halfway point so as to indicate no overheating. The numbers looked like they were 30 something?
