  1. Go to Google. It is right on their site. You have to hunt around a page or two, but it shouldn't take more than 15 seconds to find it.
  2. People hate MS so much, they pooh-pooh the XP firewall out of habit. I have had it for nine months and think it is fine. I tested it on the free 'Net stealth sites, and it passed with flying colors. Whereas, the 'Net is full of people who have had a hard time with XP and Zone Alarm, and the other firewalls tying up their whole systems. Supposedly, it lets things out. So, get Lavasoft Ad-aware and Ad-watch. Also, PC-illin is the best AV to use with XP. XP is funny, things must be done XP's way, or you will have trouble. External firewalls are a prime example.
  3. Post on PC Magazine's Discussions.
  4. Somewhere is an option for authorizing the mouse to 'turn on', 'favor', 'activate' whatever it is pointing at or resting in. You don't even have to click. This may be part of your problem.
  5. Not all shortcuts are marked as such, I would say at least half ar not. Many people delete icons on the desktop as they think they are all shortcuts, or does not say it is a shortcut. I have had many instances of checking an icon out, it does not say it is a shortcut, so I delete it to the Rec. Bin, but do not empty the Bin. Then, I search for the program in Search or Start or My Computer to make sure it will stlll run without the desktop icon. Then, I empty the Bin.
  6. I would not get rid of it. You may delete a program instead of a shortcut, and then you are really in troulbe. I've done that, embarrassingly.
  7. I just reread your post. Task Launcher is only in Works, if I remember. If it only happens in Works, that is not that bad. If it happens all over the computer, that is a real nightmare. Even if it warns you like that, you can still try to open up the folder to see what happens. Or, don't you have System Restore? Go back to the Restore Point before you had the problem, and that should fix it.
  8. I am not a genius, but, I think you made a boo-boo. I had Office, which is more 'serious' than Works, but I installed it and uninstal- led it. It turns out it is a bad thing to do: try not to uninstall large programs that reach down into the innards of the computer. Every programs leaves tentacles in the Registry and all the down deep parts. When you uninstall, those tentacles remain. You said you reinstalled Works, I hope you put it back in the same drive. Next, always check Microsoft's Knowledge Base, it may be a bug they know about. If you or none of your computer tech friends can fix it, I would recommend to post on PC Magazine's forum, where the readers are some pretty heavy dudes. Again, I am not an expert. But, if worse comes to worse, you might have to save all your info to disk, wipe everything out, and reload. That should solve the problem, but it is a major job.
  9. I am not a computer expert; but, I had that problem once. Every time I did something on the computer, I forget what, it made this horrble grinding sound of checking the floppy when no floppies were in there. I can be a little help: somebody told me to go into DOS or Safe Mode, I forget which, and there is a setting in there that you can turn off that gives you the choice of having the computer check the floppy at certain times or not. I am sorry, that is all I can remember, but if you play around with that, it may solve your problem.
