  1. HELP!!! This must be the first time I couldnt figure my way out of a problem. I am configuring a cpu for a relative. Its an older 300mhz AMD K-6 with 128 ram. I am trying to install a new Epson Inkjet printer(Stylus C42UX) and because its a USB 2.0 printer I installed a Shuttle CV18 USB 2.0 card in the cpu. The card seemed to install fine because it is listed in the control panel>system>hardware area as being there. The problem is it doesnt see the Epson when I try to install the printer.I have used every method I can think of to get the card to see the printer. No luck! Also I dont own any other 2.0 device to see it the card is really there or only saying it is there, what I mean if it is really active. I have already spent one good evening at this can anyone give me some advice. I am useing a full updated version of Windows 98. Thanks brad Seattle
  2. I am looking for my defrag tool for XP and I cant find it on my XP cd. Brad
  3. I have 2 hardrives. Both NTFS based and one with XP,the other the slave. Here is my problem. I tried to drag a 1gig folder with subfolders and files into my 2nd drive. It did some of the folder but after a while I got an error message that said "Data Error:cyclic redundancy check." Any idea why. Now anytime I try to copy over a file or folder I get this error. Brad
  4. Help. I somehow got a search bar called "Intelligent Explorer" attached to the bottom of my upper search bar on my IE v6.0.28. I can usually get rid of these or track down the offending file. This one has got me stumped. Can someone help me remove it? Thanks Brad
  5. I just bought a new laptop. How do I synchronize my laptop with my home pc? I want to periodically update the email and other settings and documents as I use one or the other so that on the road I can have the latest emails and docs I am working on. I have a Linksys router in my house and both are on the networks, they are also running XP Home Edition. Thanks Brad
  6. Thanks it worked great. The only strange thing now is if I re boot I get another b/w screen that says, "invalid boot ini file boot from c:\windows" Then it goes ahead and boots just fine. Brad
  7. O.K. Then could I take that cd and run upstairs and put it on my wifes computer.
  8. I did a partial install of my XP and now Iget the b/w daul boot screen. How do I remove it? Brad
  9. I couldnt find the answer in the first few posts. Brad
  10. Thanks you guys. I'll get to work. Brad
  11. I finally bought a second 80 gig hd. Can someone help me with installation. I already have one 80 gig hd, one cd burner and one dvd player. What is the best way to install the second hd. Should I put the two cd units on one cable and the two hd's on one cable??? Thanks Brad
  12. I am trying to enable my XP firewall (Home Edition). The problem is I cant find the advanced tab as directed by Microsoft.com. Here is the instruction given. "How to Enable Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) on Windows XP On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click the Network and Internet Connections category. (If the Network and Internet Connectionsis not visible, click Switch to Category View under Control Panel on the left side of the Control Panel window.) Click Network Connections. Right-click the Dial-up, LAN, or High-Speed Internet connection that you use to connect to the Internet, and then click Properties from the context menu. On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select Protect my computer or network, and then click OK. The Windows XP firewall is now enabled." When I go to the Network Connections in Control Panel and right click on Internet Connection all I get is a settings tab. Where might I find the firewall option?
  13. Actually I didnt uinnstall the O&O program. When I reinstalled XP it didnt seem to see the startup file of O&O. So I just tried to delete the directory of O&O and I think it must of screwed up the default XP defrag somehow.O&O wasnt listed in the regular add/remove programs list. Thanks every one for your help. MSFN is the greatest. Brad
  14. I am the administrator on my machine. If there is no way to fix this problem. Then can I just reinstall XP,without redoing my account settings. It seems with W98 I was ableto just reinstall over an existing installation.
  15. Thanks for hanging in there with me AaronXP. I got the files and expanded them like you said. I installed from the inf file. And then there was an icon in the start>accesories>tools this time (disk defragment) It was not the normal defrag icon.It was a general dos icon . When I clicked on it it tried to search for the dfrg.msc file and didnt find it. I then thought to copy the file to windows>system32 directory. This time it gave me an error screen, called Microsoft Managment Console and information like "snap-in failed to initialize" "name:unknown" "CLSIDE: and a whole string of numbers....." SOOO, I am stuck again. One strange think is last week I installed my copy of XP on an older 350mhz machine for my wife because she got a virus and her W98 was locking up allot. XP installed fine but I know its not registered and I am going to get here a new machine anyway. But IT had defrag in the tools section and it worked great. Brad
  16. No. I only have the Home Edition.
  17. I did the right click on the C drive in properties I clicked on the defrag button. I then got an error screen that said the disk defrag is not installed, and to go to the add remove programs in control panel. I am thinking XP doesnt know what the heck it is doing. If it is a core program then it shouldnt suggest to go to the add/remove section. Would my only option be to reinstall the XP program? What really gets me is why the heck it would install in the beginning. Also I only get "check now" and "defrag" tabs in tools.
  18. As long as I am on the subject why the heck cant I just install it from the optional components of the setup from the WinXP cd. Sometimes Windows can be really frustrating!
  19. O.K. I did exactly what you said. It checked my XP CD and went back to the the command screen. I went to accesories and still now defrag tool. Any more ideas.
  20. Windows says it cant find file. Is it on the XP disk?
  21. I dont seem to have disk defrag installed under accesories >tools. And I cant find it on the WinXP cd. Where is it and how do I load it? Thanks Brad
  22. Yea,OK. I will get an upgrade version of W98 from a friend and try that. Does W98 recognize the new USB version 2.0 speed though?
  23. Win98. I took a really good look at the mobo. There seems to be a gray 16 prong female port labled "usb/mib" that my mouse is wired to. This is kind of a dated system. Do you think that port might have a conflict?
  24. Hi, I am trying to install a Shuttle USB 2.0 card (PCI) in a PII 266 machine. The motherboard is an ASUS TXP4. I put the card in and start the driver cd but I get to a "ERROR cant id the device" screen that stops me. How can I get my system to recognize the card? Any help would be appriciated. Brad
  25. I am trying to delete some junk spyware that got installed to my "Program Files" directory. When I do it gives me an access denied warning. When I go to the properties sceen for the folder and/or the specific folder and re-attribute to "read" it still doesnt work. In fact the explorer doesnt seem to hold the change I have made. How do I change the properties so I can delete some of these folders/files? Thanks Brad
