  1. Thanks WolfX2, sorry about the board confusion. I tried it and there are problems with the editor. My enter key doesnt scoll to next line and other code problems. Im using IE 7.0.52960 and its a new beta version. There must still be some bugs Microsoft needs to work on. Brad
  2. Am I just missing it?I cant find the spell check for the forum. Brad
  3. This is a problem I've had periodically. I believe when I reboot it cures itself. But sometimes it take a few times. The problem is if I go to START>MY Computer or any other file explorer option my curser goes into a couple seconds of hour glass mode and nothing happens.I have to click on a Desktop shortcut for a folder to get into the file explorer. Is this some kind of startup problem. It minor but annoying enough that Id like to know the reason. Thanks Brad
  4. LLXX Thanks for the direction here. I have been through every single option suggested and cant find any power saving options for my Linksys card. I think I'll email linsys and see what I can find. I know when I go on battery there has been some kind of notice about the network card and some kind of option to disable it to save power. I will try to get that screen and see if I can do something with it. Also on the Desktop>Properties >Power managment there is a drop down menu the chose an option on how the machine will us a certain power profile ,maybe theres something there. Thanks Ill try to take it from here. Love MSFN org great site.
  5. LLXX Yes,it must be the power managment issue. I think I was told that before but the problem is I cant find anyplace that would allow me to modify the card settings. I have a Linksys-G Notebook Adapter 2.4 ghz 802.11g model:WPC54GV4. I go to Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>Network Adapter>Wireless-G and there's no power managment options. If I got to Program File>Linksys>WPC54G there are some files and exe programs, one reconfigures my card (I shouldnt have hit that ,now I have to reset it up at work,I just plug in at home RU45),and I cant find anything there to reset the power managment setting. Where could I find that? Brad
  6. Gouki, It is a WPA,sorry. It is a private Linksys router that we have were I work. Im a firefighter and we pay for our own Comcast Cable account. Just like at home. It is about 20 ft away. The problem is,lets say I just rebooted and it works fine like right now. If I just close my IE and leave for 15 or 20 minutes I cant log back onto the router. If I disconnet and reconnect typing in our password that doest help either. I actually have to reboot my laptop, then I can relog into the router. Its obviously my laptop becasue everyone else can stay connected all day. Brad
  7. I have a problem thats really annoying. I have Dell Inspirion 8500 laptop using a Linksys card to a Linksys wireless router. The router uses WAP protect. It located at my work. When I get there I can log in an surf just fine, but if I leave my desk fr 10 min.or so I cant hookup to the internet. Sometimes my connection gets slower and slower till it just stops working. I updated my Linksys wirless card driver and seemed to get a little improvemnet, but keep getting the lockup after while. If I reboot my computer I can re-connect and surf away till it happens again. What kind of problem does this sound like? Any ideas. Thanks Brad Seattle
  8. I am using XP Home Edition and everytime I boot the first screen gives me my regular desktop but it also has a file exploer screen on it and I have to remove it to proceed. There is nothing in my StartUp folder about this. Where do I find the setting to remove this Explorer screen? Thanks Title Edited - Please follow new posting rules from now on. --Zxian
  9. I figured it out. I am a little embarrased because it really isnt Microsofts fault. i am using Sygate Personal Firewall. All I did was diable both ends and was able to connect. Thanks anyway.
  10. Can someone give me a little direction here. I am ready to tear my hair out over my home lan network. I am using XP Home and a wired Linksys router with a broadband connection. I think my problem is my general understanding of how XP uses a lan (network) connection. When try to access a computer, say my laptop after I have taken it to work, the other computers and my laptop gives me an no permission error.Thogh the 2 computer at home can connect no problem. Also why do I see the hour glass sooo darn long when I want to go anywhere in the My Network folder? Just deleting a connection thaks over a minute. Sometime it just gives me a "Not Responding" in the task manager programs. One more thing,on the "Entire Network" icon that looks like a little globe theres a thing that looks like a pad lock on my main system computer and I cant figure out what it is. That obviously a problem but I cant figure out where to go to get that padlock open. I wish Microsoft would make this network stuff a little more user friendly. I work to hard at my real job just to make a living and I cant spend hours memorizing the nuances of building a stable home network, I need it to work with little effort. I know this is a somewhat disjoined question but I would love to figure out how to keep my lan stable and know where to go with the settings each time it gets a little out of wack. Could you recommend a user friendly web site that might help me. The Microsoft web site is so big and complicated I cant seem to grasp it. Thanks Brad
  11. I am sure but the other part of you question might apply. I have a USB 2.0 Creative Labs Zen that works great when I plug it into the Sis card. Soooo it must have something to do with the external drive. Right? I am asking here because i really dont know what to look for with this problem. My exteranal drive is an Argosy case with 2 media card readers the the device manager sees but the Hitachi drive I put inside of it my computer doesnt see. Here is one possibility that could make my original question moot. I might of got the 12v power cord mixed up with another power cord at another location where there was several devices being used. I know its 12v but I am thinking the watts are different. The power cord isnt label either way. I will try to confirm that I get the right sord and try again in a day or 2. Thanks
  12. I have a new external 80 gig hd with a usb 2.0 connection.I have used it on 2 other computers so far that have usb 2.0 ports. One a laptop the other I installed a pci 2.0 card.I have had no problems thus far till today. I tried to use it on another computer in my house (I use the thing as a large portable fileing cabinet both at home and at work) that I had installed a SiS 2 port pci usb 2.0 card. Every time I plugged it in I got the error"this device can work faster with a usb 2.0 hub....and to choose the hub from the list" so when I go to the list it doesnt even show my new SiS card but my old 1.0 hubs. I know the SiS card is there and working because of Device Manager information about the card. Am I doing something work or am I missing a step? Thanks Brad
  13. Yes you would think so but I tried that and there was no options for changing the way the page scrolls down other then to choose the number of lines be whell turn or movement. I did buy a wireless Logitech mouse and didnt use the software because windows sets it up on its own. I have had the same problem with PS2 mouses also. The scroll setting is in an obscure are I think. Brad
  14. This is a problem I always have and keep forgeting how to fix. I reinstalled my XP and now when I scroll with my wheel mouse in IE or any program I get a cascading effect. I want it to use a smoother effect that I was able to use but since forgotten where to set. Where do I set this option? Thanks Brad
  15. I doged the bullet yesterday with my wifes pc. It basically crashed and I was able to take the hd out and put it in my pc and get her important doc over to my hd. I now think I would like to build a free standing hd that is just for full system backups. I would also like to run it directly off my Linksys router so that it is a separate compomnent of my house system. Has anyone used these and what is the best way to do it.Is there a particular brand and is there software other than the standard XP Backup that would allow it to do it at night without me having to do it manually? Now for my cheap side, would getting onme of those cases to hold an internal hd be a way to save money? I have seen the Maxtor exteranl with a button on it but then I read a bad review.
  16. I just hooked up to Comcast cable the other day from a DSL account. My problem now is that I can recieve email but not send.I know the problem is at my router because when I connect directly I can send and recieve. I have a Linksys wired router and I get an error message about "too many connections (2) on rwcrmhc12". I am not sure what rwcrmhc12 means though.
  17. I have a dell computer with a dvd drive and a dvd burner drive. Neither one will read cds or dvds. I did a system restor and uninstalled both drives. they then worked for about two hours. After that they stopped reading the discs again. I tried the same thing and it didn't work a second time. What should I try?
  18. Thanks all. Again good advice. I am learning more about my firewalls. Both XP and Sygate.Maybe a little knowledge about my connection will help me. Also I found a great site called DSL Reports that tested my connection and gave me more insite about how my dsl actually works.
  19. I have a Linksys 4 port route with a DSL line running XP> Some mornings I get up to surf and my IE wont hook up. I get the white screen that says I am not on line. Do anyone know what might be happening overnight to block my internet connection? I have to go out and unplug both my DSL modem and my router to get hooked back up. Thanks Brad
  20. I got it fixed. Defraged and deindexed and still had this sound. I finally got down there with the power on and the cover off and realized it was the video card fan. I had balls of dust jammed in the workings. I cleaned it out and now the thing seems to be back to normal. Thanks I needed to defrag anyway.
  21. Hi, I have an 80 gig hd running on XP Home and I am worried about it wearing itself out. I can see it turning its light on all night long and hear a grinding (more like soft spinning) each time the light goes on. I have the energy settings set to turn off the hd after 15 minutes and turn the monitor off but it seems like they dont do their job. Am I right to be worried about wearing the hd out?
  22. Now I am really p***ed. I reformated the hd installed XP ,updated the mobo drivers and the thing still wont see the printer no matter what I do. It sees the 2.0 usb card but it doesnt see the printer. Do you think its some kind of PnP setting in the bios? Brad
  23. O.K. I hooked the card and the Epson into my 1.8 Intel computer with an Asus P4S333 mobo. It worked like a charm. I am running XP though. It saw the Shuttle VIA card and loaded the drivers on its own and I loaded the Epson driver. The one thing I saw that was different is a couple things in the System>Hardware area that was not there in the older machine. One says "USB Printer support " in the Universl Serial Bus catagory. That is not listed in the older machine. The old machine is a 300 mhz AMD with a Soyo mobo. Maybe its a mobo driver problem. Brad
  24. Yes,my next move is to hook up the whole mess to my first line computer. I will see if it works then. About the printer not needing the 2.0 that is news to me. That would solve all my problems! I will see about getting it to work on the 1.1. But I think the salesman told my sister(the eventual owner)that it was a 2.0 printer and that is why they sold the card with the printer. Brad
  25. Aaron' I have 1.1 usb ports on the mobo that seem to be working because I hooked up a digital camera and it saw the camera. Since the hardware manager lists the usb 2.0 card and says its working doesnt that mean that the W98 I have has usb support? Also I went to the Windows update site and downloaded all the critical updates for my W98 is there something I might be missing? How can I tell if I have the full SE W98 going? Thanks Brad
