I just got an iPod of Christmas and was delighted to use it on my PC.Surprisingly as soon as I attached my iPod Windows98SE Recognized it as an Apple iPod Thanks to Maxim Decim USB Drivers.But I couldn't get iTunes on Windows 98SE and after trying several other equvalents(vPod,EphPod).To My surprise non of them detected my iPod Nano, even though it was installed by windows.I checked in the My Computer Folder and sure enough the iPod Drive was there.The Computer recognized it as a normal USB Disk Drive.But every software I tired could not detect the iPod.

What Should I do?

You don't need iTunes.

Use Windows Explorer to copy the files over if you must.

tried it...it stores the MP3's Just fine..but when I browse for the music I don't find it...iPod isn't a traditional Drag and Drop Digital Player, you have do some formatting to the Sound Files Before it is sent to the iPod

I had the same problem, and I found a good solution -> anapod. It is the only downloaded software I ever paid for, and believe me, it's well worth it. I just used PayPal to pay it and that's it. You can download and install a 30-day trial as far as I know, it just has some restrictions. I've been using it for 1 year now and it's awesome.

Try reTune.

This is console based program, but works.

And it runs from your ipod, so you don't have to have pc with special software installed.

It handles album art too it says.

I use this to transfer my mp3s to iPod.

- Copy mp3s to iPod, run reTune. done.

UPDATE-After an extensive research from the provided links(Thank You Everyone) I realized that my iPod was Formated for MAC and downloaded the Anapod Reinitializer to format my iPod and reinitialize it to use on a Windows PC.After that I retried it on Anapod and sure enough it worked...!

For others that don't use Anapod (I do, however, use Anapod), You can get YamiPod, which runs on all versions of windows from Win98 through Vista, as well as Linux and MacOS. (http://www.yamipod.com)

you can use foobar2000 (www.foobar2000.org), with the foo_dop.dll component.

you can also try the rockbox (www.rockbox.org) firmware.

RockBox firmware is awsome. It works very well, and it includes drag and drop.

@ LLXX, I've noticed the same thing. A standard MP3 player (Ie. Creative, Sandisk, generic mp3 player) are much better, not just for drag and drop, but in sound quality too. The iPod has almost no bass response (vastly depending on headphones) but people buy it mainly because of the advertizing, but the reason I got my iPod was because it was the cheapest 4gb flash mp3 player I could find at the time. I would not want a Hard Drive player because its moving parts/can get damaged easier than a flash disk. Thats why I got mine. I like my iPod, but I also like my Creative MP3 player.

Foxhound, I know you've gotten your iPod to work, but you might be interested in this software as it may just work on Win98.

Anyway, I've been looking for an iTunes replacement, and I have found a really good program to put music on the iPod with out it. I'm currently using it on my PII 366 laptop (WinXP though) and the software says it won't work with Win98, however the developer said there has been some interest in porting it to 98, so that could be a good thing for some of us (I might be putting Win98 on my PII 366 laptop soon).
