no, the permissions are set on the printer, not on the Machines :)

the above like you have meantioned use a Token, or like a Packet, which is unique to that computer.

but cost money,

you can elevate Permissions on the Printer, not the users Computer :)

Ethan.

Say what? These are direct attach network printers, ie Laserjet 4000 series. No permission to set expect for the ability to change the configuration, otherwise anyone can print to it if they are on the subnet. Or install software for that matter, which is what the HP printer wizard does.

WHat I mentioned above is a website, or a network appliance. Does not issue a token to the machine it accepts a document then prints it when the user releases it. Did you even look at the products. FollowMe is a little different but also not designed for a hotel situation.

Now to install a printer in windows XP you have to have admin rights.

well its worked in the past, only trying to help, :)

but what i would like to say, is if you connect a Printer to a Network, which is controlled by a Server, prefrably a Domain Controller,

then you as the DC Admin, can set Permission on the printer, which will affect any use who uses it, like a GPO,

Yes that would be true. But then it also requires domain membership or authentication. Yet again these are NOT our machines these are machines a hotel guest would bring with them while they are traveling. We want to be as non system invasive as possible. Which is why the web page/email submission is currently the solution being looked at. And most everyone knows how to navigate through a website and enter information.

Yes, there is a cost to us, but that could be recovered by charging for the service, or if it is not overly expensive we may just eat the cost and only charge for large print jobs to cover the supply cost. We currently will print your documents for free you just have to bring them to our business center and we have to have the application already installed on the system for you to print it.

@IcemanND

Nice finds.

You could also check places like libraries/university, unless it is a courtesy to customers, you will need something to keep track of the charges, similar to the webprint here:

http://www.rice.edu/ITtutorials/owlnet/printing.html

http://www.lib.msu.edu/services/printing/webprint.html

http://www.willamette.edu/wits/resources/d...twork/webprint/

(though cannot say which software they are using, sorry)

The easiest one is maybe now that most PC's have .pdf printing capabilities, to make customers to print to a "generic" PDF printer (read local file), then send the file as an attachment to an e-mail address like printer@myhotel.com and set an e-mail app to periodically check the account and automatically print the attachment....

For the few ones that don't have pre-installed a PDF printer driver there are several that are Freeware and redistrebutable....

same problem still applies to pdf printing if it's not installed and they have no admin rights you are stuck.

hence:

The key being it needs to be a simple as possible. If at all possible without installing drivers on the guest machine.
