Stead Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 I was just wondering, since when vista comes out and the beta expires and i'm forced to buy since i've now gotten addicted to it and find xp feels slow in comparasion........if i were to buy my home premium vista experiance, would i be able to'upgrade' from my ultimate beta to my shiny home retail box?i'm not saying i would do this, infact i'm certain i will do a clean install, but after looking around i can't find a clear answer, i know you can upgrade from home to ultimate, but to me from ultimate to home would be a downgrade and i can't see anyware that says you can?just curious i get the impression a lot of people will just want to upgrade to the retail when it comes out, just wondering if its possible, or is it in huge writing on the ms site and i just missed it?
mark strelecki Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 Hi, Stead -Your hunch is correct - you'd be doing a "downgrade" and would not work properly, if at all. The clean install approach is ALWAYS best when moving to a new (or upgraded) OS.So, you think Vista is FASTER than XP, eh?You must have a very fast system. B) Best wishes from a beautifully sunny Fall day in Atlanta, GA.
LLXX Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 Hi, Stead -So, you think Vista is FASTER than XP, eh?You must have a very fast system. B)Either that or his XP installation is slow because of huge numbers of autoruns, disk not defragged, cache is filled up, etc.
Stead Posted November 2, 2006 Author Posted November 2, 2006 you find vista is slower?games run slower i've noticed, well i've only tried a couple, but definatly slower, but using windows feels a lot faster, its more more responsive than xp! saying that i haven't tried the 32bit vista, but i'm assuming its the same type of thing the only thing i hate about vista is the fact i have to press f8 to disable driver signing to get the wireless to work although i tend to just use sleep in vistai found vista was usuable until i put an extra bit of memory in tho! i don't think my computer is that good, was a few years ago, budget processor, budget ram budget, ish video card!
kutster Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't all the vista versions come out on 1 disk but you have to buy a serial number for the version that you want. So if you have Home Premium but wanted the features that business offers also you could buy a business key to unlock thoughs features that are special to the Business Edition. So now not only do you have the features of Business but also the features of Home Premium. So Basically in theory you won't need to downgrade at all because Microsoft has made it to where its a ladder as you go up from Home Basic to Ultimate for each version you go up you unlock more and more features. The point is that its not like xp where you can only have Xp home or Xp Pro or Xp media. With Vista you can have all of what comes with that version you bought and all the features that the lower versions have. I hope that makes sense.
Stead Posted November 7, 2006 Author Posted November 7, 2006 so if you install home, it will simply remove the ultimate features?
kutster Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 Basically. I just can't figure out why u wouldn't want Unlimate. It is supposed to be best of all of the versions.

Super-Magician Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 @LLXX, that is not true. Microsoft is releasing all versions on a single DVD. The key you use will determine the version.
Nakatomi2010 Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 I'm sure as hell not planning on buying Ultimate, I'll probably buy Home Premium, prmarily for the Media Centerish components... Worst case scenario I have to buy more copies to go around.... **** Gaming, office, media center PC, and laptop.... Much rather be allowed to install a single copy accross the board than buy 4.....Why am I upgrading? I HAVE seen a HUGE boost in performance, and my hope is that by going dual core I'll seea bigger boost since Vista is designed with this in mind....Need to remmeber here folks, Windows XP was made in a time when Dual Core chips were a theory, and compatibility has been stapled in, same as WiFi (Hence why SP2 was a huge boost for XP WiFi)

kutster Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Nakatomi makes a good point. Vista is made for 2 core while Xp wasn't. But as soon as microsoft seemed to be on the ball now Quad core chips are coming out, and if it takes another 5 years for microsoft to come out with a new windows version. Well, lets just say they will be lagging pretty far behind Apple, since they work pretty close to Intel.

Spooky Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 The next MS OS scheduled for delivery is 'Vienna' which is scheduled in 2012. In the interim we have the Longhorn Server (in late 2007) .... and SP1 for Vista (code named Fiji, which is not just an update or service pack but a major overhaul for Vista) which is scheduled in late 2007 also. So, until we have roughly 5 years (2006 is almost over) until we see a new one (unless your counting the SP1, or if your using Longhorn Server).
