host file, entries needed?

I have this in my host file, do I need these for something, or can I delete them?

You need just one of those. But it is required, yes.

Mine seems to work just fine without... of course you can no longer use 'localhost' to refer to your own machine but 127.1 is shorter to type

I'm not saying that your computer won't work without that entry. But my personal recommendation is to leave it in. localhost loopback is a fundamental networking component.
