videobruce
I am trying to troubleshoot a very slow cable internet connection by bypassing the router. When I connect the NIC directly into the cable modem (Motorola) the computer doesn't see the modem, when it sees the router and the internet ok (but very slow). It is connected with a 25' patch cable (I will try another cable later). I have power cycled the modem and re-boot the puter and set obtaining a IP address automatically, but still nothing. All the lites on the modem are lit.Any ideas? tain
Welcome to MSFN When you say that "it doesn't see the modem" do you mean that you aren't getting an IP? Or are you getting an IP but not able to reach the internet? Can you ping the gateway IP?
videobruce
Thanks for the welcome. If I remember it correctly, I believe I get a 'network cable unplugged' error. The modem 'sees' the computer though.Anyway, there is no internet access.
tain
Try another, preferably shorter, cable and see if that helps.
videobruce
I might of been wrong about the "cable unplugged" part. The computer is 8 miles away. It will be a few days before I can't troubleshoot it again.
ringfinger
Check the duplex settings on the NIC.
videobruce
It's a new card. I believe it was used on another box also with no problem. It was also tried on a DSL internet connection with no known issue.
