AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+ a worthy choice?

I'm planning to buy an Athlon64 X2 3800+ for a cheap price for about $180 Canadian ever since AMD and Intel both slashed their cpu prices almost half (I see AMD is cutting prices, Intel is more like staying in "expensive mode"). Should I wait till the price drops down even lower or get something better but still wait for it to drop lower??

currently running on

AMD Sempron64 3400+ 2.0ghz Socket 939

1.25GB RAM DDR400

BFG Geforce 7300GS 256mb

www.amd.com/pricing

well according to this, the 3800 x2 should be 152$ usd

newegg has it for 149$.

180$cnd = 160$ usd

i would but it now, prices are great and i dont expect them to drop anymore.

What the..., a Sempron64 on S939? :blink::P

Are you sure it´s a Sempron64? Or it´s a S754?

Besides, you'd only be getting "400+" out of it (the unit of measurement here being "pluses" I guess... Whatever). Hardly a performance increase worth paying 180$ for IMHO. The 4200+ isn't much more expensive. And some of those have Pacifica as well (VT tech - if you're a VMWare user, it should help), SSE3, etc. I just bought a Windor core (AM2 socket) 4200+ and I'm quite happy with it (has DDR2 support too).

Anyways. I wouldn't really upgrade for a difference of less than 1GHz or so, unless it's dirt cheap.

Sempron64 has SSE3 too :).

@ 1337rice,

The max. you can get now is a 3700+S754

@ ripken204,
