many vista apps will not work on XP, the Dlls and dependices have changed or been rewritten, if you find what dependeces are needed for an app you can copy those across to XP and try it, no gauruntee that it will work though

Nitro I'm insulted you'd think I'd mix the two :P. The solution turned out to be that the Vista PE header is different somehow and that it needs to be patched to be compatible with XP; check out this site: http://www.joejoe.org/XP_Ports.

Now my next question is how you can patch any Vista EXE to work with XP.

Have you not heard of the VAIO project? The http://fromvistatoxp.com group has create a group of libraries that allow patching files and applications for use with Windows XP. It hasn't been updated since February, but it was complete enough to port the Vista Sidebar!

Here is a link to download the Windows Vista Sidebar (complete with VAIO XP):

Hope this helps!
