Anyone know about alternative software to view/edit those types of files other than M$ Office or OpenOffice?

you can get freeware viewers for office documents, check softpedia

had a quick look and couldnm't see any on there..

Not as good or as complete as MS-Word but works for the basic things.

Edit only in rtf format but open doc files.
