pci-e in pci slot

I have a spare pci-x slot, and a spare pci slot, can a pci-e graphics card go at a slower speed in one of the pci or pci-x slots? I have a spare pci-e card and wanted to add a third monitor to my setup.

unfortunatly, no a pci-e card cannot be put in a pci or pci-x slot

if you want a third moniter badly pci video adapters are really cheap now < 50$

well its just I remember an article I read saying that you could put them in and the card would just disable some channels, guess I was wrong.

I think you read putting a PCI-E card into a faster rated PCI-E slot.

No. You can only do it the other way around. You can put a 1x card into a 16x slot, but a 16x-slotted card will not physically fit into a 1x slot.

I meant within my current machine. I am saving up for two lcd's, and dont want to spend any money on things not necessary, I was just thinking about repurposing old hardware.

well like said there is no way unless you use a pci vid card
