Yeah Thanks Guys :thumbup

@clintb specs are little over the top there for me basically another machine to use @ home mostly for the wife & children etc. A budget of around $1,200 to $1,400 AUS

With the Acer etc they come with xp home standard, I have two lic copies of pro that I know I can use on me desktop & also the notebook, Eula allows. Is there any forseeable problems in simply wiping the drive/partitions & installing xp pro sp2 on those, not keen on home?

I'd go for the Dell over the Acer. Acer's quality control isn't much to write home about.

As for installing XP Pro - you shouldn't have any troubles in either case. I'd suggest still running any "backup recovery media creator" software they've got, just in case you ever run into a snag where their customer support requires it of you.

well for the dell

$300 off $999+ on select Inspiron notebooks w/ coupon: GCFR6??LQQ9HWW, exp 5/11

$450 off $1499+ on select Inspiron notebooks w/ coupon: 4BK9N5L$56RPF8, exp 5/11

$500 off $1599+ on select Inspiron notebooks w/ coupon: KCZGSCHQ0FPZ2C, exp 5/11

The guys in the laptop service centers tell me that Toshiba has the greatest mean time between failures of any of the major brands. I install lots of Toshibas for my customers and I really like them.

Not considered a major brand, SagerNotebooks are a real dream machine.

Take a look at www.sagernotebook.com

And, they have set up service centers all accross the country.

On the other hand, if you don't really need a laptop, you'll get a lot more for your money if you get a desktop PC and have the advantage of being able to upgrade it later, when you need to.

laptops are not very upgradable and very hard and expensive to repair.

By their very nature, they don't perform as well as a desktop PC either.

They also use very proprietary drivers that you may not be able to easily find if you reformat for a different OS.

XP home can easily be upgraded to XP Pro/SP2 with a simple Upgrade CD. It's done all the time.

Good Luck,

Finally opted for the Acer

Which has similar specs to what I first suggested with the smaller screen 14 inch but not bad.

All for around a grand not bad value I thought.

It came with xp home which I put up with for a few days till I scoured it for non window drivers & added them to my ua source. My first go basically installed pro to the second partition but I then changed the ans file to repartition =yes & that sorted it :thumbup .

All in All very happy with the choice so far.

Cheers
