Get WAssociate. You can do that quick and fast with this excellent program. Or just use the windows filetypes applet.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~wstudios/Associate/

Install it and then put a shortcut to it in the sendto folder. Send to it the filetypes you want to change and just use the browse button to choose a new app.

It is foolproof as there are multiple undo levels.

You can also easily save to registry file its panes.

To do so just copy the top key in the upper pane and paste into a text editor. Repeat with the lower pane and eventually with the Clsids you can jump to if any, and then save all that as a reg file.

Only quick way I know to backup any filetype associations on the fly.

Associate DOC, XLS, etc

Windows 2000/XP

1. Launch Explorer.

2. Select Tools/Folder Options/File Types.

3. Click New.

4. Type the file extension into

"File Extension." 5. Click OK.

6. Click Advanced, then New.

7. Type open into the "Action" field.

8. Type in the path of the .EXE file in

"Application used to perform action." either by typing in a new path or selecting Browse, locating and double clicking the .EXE file.

unfortuantely thats the best way i know, otherwise you can right click a file and use the open with and set to always open with. I just drag and drop the files i want to open on the shortcut. Otherwise you can use the full open office and run the installer which will create file associations.
