CHANGING name of "START" menu ?

Featured Replies

hi

i am preparing a xp cd and i want to change "START" writing. i opened explorer.exe with reshacker and did it. it works properly with my current windows. but i want to put it in my unattended cd. when i replace it with the old file in cd, it doesnt work. it still seems as start. and i noticed the explorer.exe file that have been coppied to xp directory by windows setup is still the original file.but there is my new explorer.exe file in cd (in i386) what can i do???

i am waiting for your solutions.

it depends on how you put it in your I386

i think you should compress it and name it something like explorer.ex_

indeed mod explorer.exe with resourcetuner or hacker and then modyfipe and makecab explorer.exe then put in your I386 folder reddy

Try my Explorer.exe it has the word Hi on the button now edit it to what you want.

This one installs as I have used and tested it, this is for XP SP2 english.

Gsm_Explorer.Exe

When you have finished editing the Explorer.exe to what you like then run

this Cmd in the same dir as the Explorer.exe

MakeCab_Explorer.Cmd

@Echo Off && Mode 75,5 && Color f3 && Title Make Cab Explorer.exe

MakeCab Explorer.exe

gunsmokingman's way is not working
Then you are doing it wrong plain and simple, this always works for me.

Did you read the my Guide I have done at least 10 test install

since i wrote that and have never had any problems.

How can 4 easy steps be so hard for you to do?

1:\ Mod you file, this means to make changes

2:\ makecab the file, this is the format for compression

3:\ place the mod file in the Ua Source, this is what you are installing

4:\ It installs this way.

@gunsmokingman

Nice guide there.

I think you need to "modifype" the explorer.exe before CABbing it (otherwise you get error messages or corrupted-file dialogs). Or is it not necessary?

I do this to allow the mod file during install, I have change all the False to true.

Is your problem that the modded and compressed file will not read at the BSOI?

I just open reshacker(I know it's crude but it works), do the modifications I need, run makecab on explorer and rename it EXPLORER.EX_. :)

If it still doesn't work or setup gripes about a copy/protection problem you'll probably have to change the checksum. I still haven't found a proper way of doing this.

fisrt of all there are plenty of posts about this already.. second this is how you do it and you will need to use 3 programs to be sure this works right.

1.) use ResHacker.exe and open explorer.exe, go to the branch "String Table" and go to 37 and 38 and change the word start in both to whatever you want. one is for classic nonthemed taskbar and the other is for themed i forget which is which but i think 38 is for the classic.

2.) use MODIFYPE.EXE and correct the checksum on explorer.exe ( >modifype.exe explorer.exe -c )

3.) use MAKECAB.EXE and compress explorer.exe ( >MAKECAB.EXE /D COMPRESSIONTYPE=LZX /D COMPRESSIONMEMORY=21 explorer.exe explorer.ex_ )

and then place the compressed file which should be naed explorer.ex_ in the i386 dir on you unattended disk.

You do not need to rename the Explorer.exe to to Explorer.ex_ because after you run make cab

you are left with Explorer.ex_

Read my posts very carefully. I didn't put emphasis on the rename because of the extension...

This is what you said, you state and rename it EXPLORER.EX_.

Maybe I am reading that wrong could you please explain that statement to me

This is to show that my way of adding mod files work.
