XP's built in one does protect against nanoprobes, but I would probably use ZoneAlarm if I didnt have a router.

Norton is a viable alternative too I guess.

Tiny Personal Firewall is the [b:4230a0cd3d]best[/b:4230a0cd3d]. I hate Norton Internet Security, Sygate looks ok. AtGuard used to be my favorite, and NIS 2000 was pretty good. I wouldn't use BlackICE if ya paid me.

This question has been asked SO many times. I believe you have asked it in the past. Please start refering to the search area on the forums. None of our options have changed.

Drew...yeah, it can get annoying when mods have to see the same posts over and over but I understand that you have good intentions so this is okay. XPerties and I go back and forth playing bad cop...whoever is in the worst mood! Chris gets the crown right now because he's dealing with a lot.

About the firewall deal...the ones that Lou mentioned are pretty much the ones that everybody here has tested. All have good things about them and all have bad...depending on who you ask. For instance, everybody seems to love ZA but when I use it, I can't send files on MSN or post on this forum...same goes for NPF2002. Sygate seemed very good to me but when I ran port scans, I had ports that were wide open. Also Chris had a hacker that got in and destroyed his files while using Sygate. I have also used Tiny and I don't have any complaints about that one but I am sure that somebody else does.

The point is, they are all good and they all suck..depending on how it works on your computer. You will never get a straight answer on this. One thing that I have learned is that if somebody wants to hack your computer, they can bust right through any one of these firewalls. A router may be the solution for the ultraparanoid like Chris.

Hope this helps dude!

Hell yah, Im not happy with just ZOne Alarm, every firewall is breakable so I made sure I added a better security lock down On my system. Along with the software firewall i also added a router. If you want the best you pay for the best.

And no, My sand is gone, I washed it out.:)

I test Tiny Personal Firewall with four different online scanning sites and these were the results. I'm invisible on the Internet, no ports open, etc.

I think Tiny is one of the most powerful firewalls, uses the fewest resources, and is really targetted more towards "power users". It's not as dumbed down as Zone Alarm or NIS but it's just as good if not better at protecting you both ways. The only real feature it lacks is ad filtering, however this is not a problem as I run The Proxomitron on my system and don't worry about ads, popups, popunders, banners, stupid background MIDIs, or flash animations.

Ditto - the last post. If you want to be totally secure - you MUST use a combination of hardware and software protection. A good router with firewall along with ANY of the software mentioned in this thread is the best you can hope for!
