Hi all, merry xmas to all!!! How can we remotely shutdown a computer in a local area network running windows xp sp2? I cannot shut it down it displays error message " Access Denied " and if I try to connect using the computer management, It displays an error "RPC server is unavailable" This is driving me nuts...Hope you guys can help...I've read on forums about adding a user account on the remote computer same as with the computer that is shutting down with the same priviledges, but it still dont work. I hope you guys could help. Thanks! :(

use the winxp/2003 command line shutdown.exe it will allow you to shutdown a local xp/2003 machine or a winxp/3004 machine on the network. Asuming you have permissions to do so. I think shutdown.exe is part of the Windows 2003 Resource Kit Here.

Hope this helps,

That would be this:

shutdown -m \\computername -s

I use this on my home computers! ;)

Follow the link provided above...the post talks about pstools, particularly psshutdown. Those are fantastic command line tools that offer a wealth options. Highly recommended. The site is:

I'm not a networking person, so I'm doing a lot of guessing here.

On your network can you access the desktop of the remote PC?

If you can ,,,,, can you click a shortcut on that desktop?

If you can,,,,, you can put this line into a shortcut on that desktop and just click it to shutdown that PC.

%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 00 -f

That's the correct syntax for a Quick Shutdown Icon on your desktop.

I use that myself and share it with all my customers.

Good Luck and Happy New Year,
