Aegis Posted December 24, 2005 Posted December 24, 2005 Computer enthusiasts adore Raptor hard disk drives (HDDs) from Western Digital Technologies for unbeatable performance at relatively affordable cost. Unfortunately, the drives so far have not featured really large capacity. Nevertheless, WD may improve this in a few weeks when it released a new Raptor with 150GB capacity.Germany-based online store Alternate.de is currently offering its clients to pre-order WD1500AD hard disk drive, hich is also known as Raptor 150GB. The new Raptor drives reportedly sport 16MB cache, feature average seek time of 4.5ms, 10 000rpm motor, support for native command queuing (NCQ) technology. The new drive also has Serial ATA-300 interface and promises to offer leading performance. The new Raptor hard drive from WD will not only be an interesting purchase for gaming enthusiasts and workstation users, but will also be a valuable option for servers that require high performance. The new hard disk drive will reportedly be available in January, 2006. The price for pre-order is approximately $380 (€319), which is inline with expectations. Western Digital officials did not comment on the news-story.Source: http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/storage/displ...1223083509.html
suryad Posted December 24, 2005 Posted December 24, 2005 Wow this is badass....so some good did come off of Seagate having bought Maxtor. Now Western Digital is threatened. I mean is it really hard for them to make a 500 gig spin at those speeds?
Aegis Posted December 24, 2005 Author Posted December 24, 2005 Yeah it is. The amount of platters you can fit on a drive as small as the Raptor is the limiting factor.
suryad Posted December 25, 2005 Posted December 25, 2005 Hmm...the Raptor is a 3.5 inch disk right? So are the other 500 gig hard drives so I dont see what you are saying.
Aegis Posted December 25, 2005 Author Posted December 25, 2005 The platters are smaller than average to achieve the 10,000RPMs. You can see this in the pictures of the Raptor.
LLXX Posted December 29, 2005 Posted December 29, 2005 They also have to be stronger to withstand the forces of 10,000 RPM rotation.
Gouki Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Its out!The thing is BEAUTIFULL!! Clear case so we can see inside!Check it out!
ripken204 Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 wow i want one, but soo much money!this is officially the best hdd out yet! sataII, 16mb cache, wow!get it at newegg for 300$http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16822136012
Aegis Posted January 7, 2006 Author Posted January 7, 2006 The one on Newegg is the enterprise edition. It has some features that slows down desktop computers, but help in a multi-user, random request environment. There's also not that beautiful clear cover .
jcarle Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 Enterprise Edition drives are better because their reliability is much higher. They last twice as long, as built twice as tough and offer a 5 year warranty instead of 3 years. Also, if you're concerned about the performance hit from NCQ, you can just disable it.
