slu77er Posted December 16, 2005 Share Posted December 16, 2005 G'day and Merry Xmas to all,OK, I know I'll probably get flamed bad for this one but hey, I gotta find out so I gotta ask...Say I go to C: and pick a file 'out of the blue', click on it and the "Open With" window opens with a list of programs which are used to open files of all sorts presented, typically none of these programs will open the file so what do I do?Also, how do I know (for future reference) which program to allocate for certain file types and extensions and is there a program out there that will do this for me?This problem has had me stumped from the first time I ever went near a computer and I am at the point now where I need to know....I am not so 'thin skinned' that any negative comments u choose to reply with are going to do anything other than humour me, however, if u would consider posting something helpful it would be very much appreciated...Thankyou,slu77er. Pantner Posted December 16, 2005 Share Posted December 16, 2005 the easiest way (IMO) is to just google the specific extension...unfourtunetly, you actually have to know yourself wat program to assign....99% of the time, if you have the program installed then it will automatically assign itself to that file...like a PDF file...if you have Acrobat reader installed, it will automatically try to open all pdf files with acrobat reader... randiroo76073 Posted December 16, 2005 Share Posted December 16, 2005 If you have "QuickView" enabled you can view most all file types with it, if enabled it will be on right click menu near top, as Pantner said if you can't figure out which prgm to use, Google. miko Posted December 17, 2005 Share Posted December 17, 2005 (edited) if you wanna get more advanced, OpenExpert ( http://www.baxbex.com/openexpert.html ) is one of coolest tools around.it'll let you open filetypes will multiple programs, so for example you could set it up so you can open graphic files in a viewer and an editor or music and video files in more than one player.
