BSD when connecting a configured HD to a new mobo...

Recommended Posts

Here goes another question.... i dont know what's wrong with me....

So as some might know from a previous topic, I was having problems keeping a new mobo+cpu powered on for more than 10 minutes, this issue is taken care of. Now I want to connect my current 200gig HD that was on my old PC and hook it up to the new mobo. The few times I have done this windowsXP usually starts up and detects all the new components from the new mobo, this is not the case this time. Right before it reaches the WinXP splash screen it blues screens with a stop 7b error message. I tried botting in safe mode and it also crashes when it reaches a file called 'mup.sys'

Is there any way to get this to work without having to reinstall windows on the drive. What do you guys suggest

Thanks again guys,

ceez

did this drive have c: on the old system? might want to delete the "old"

c: partition.

regardless, boot from the xp cd to the repair console. once it gets to a prompt use:

fixmbr

fixboot

let me know how that works.

@Porn Loader: Yes, this drive DID have a C:\ drive, fully configured working XP. I dont want to wipe out my drive, I want to keep everything I have in it...a lot of stuff on a 200gig drive! I did forget to mention on my post that I tried the fixboot on the recovery consolde but did not try fixmbr. I will give that one a try later.

How about if before I connect it to then new mobo i go to the device manager and uninstall all the current mobo devices and then pop it in the new mobo? I'll give that a try after the fixmbr.... :)

thanks,

ceez

@ripken204, it's my primary drive. I just want to be able to move it from one mobo to another without having to backup everything and reinstalling.

Thanks again,

well after endless hours of google-ing, I found the answers....

there were two of them, the 2nd one was so much quicker and easier, to make a long story short...

ms kb link at end of post

1st fix

boot normally into your current mobo, insert xp cd, select upgrade, let it do its thing, when it gets to the point of restarting let it restart BUT turn it off before it continues the setup, then move harddrive to new mobo. OR boot with the xp cd on the new mobo and do a reinstall of the os without partitioning or formatting.

now, the 2nd one is so much easier,

with your current setup (pre mobo upgrade or HD move), find your drivers.cab file under %SystemRoot%\Driver Cache\I386\ and extract Atapi.sys, Intelide.sys, Pciide.sys, and Pciidex.sys , copy and replace those files into SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers.

Now copy the following:

run the regfile and merge into the registry.

Thanks everyone for you help... you might want to remember this one! :)
