Zxian Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 If you did Wales, then you'd have to do Scotland as well.

bledd Posted July 20, 2006 Author Posted July 20, 2006 (edited) oops, forgot about this! Edited July 20, 2006 by bledd
Alanoll Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 is Wales a Country or a Province of England? You'll have to forgive me if I offend you with my question, but after all I am American and not entirely sure.I know from the states, that even though you have a seperate flag, doesn't mean you are a seperate country. If that were the case, I could ask for 50 US States flags to put added too EDIT:: I just did alittle research, and it's a constituent country. interesting.
Yzöwl Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 I am English, however my nationality is British, and I live in the United Kingdom. The name of the country is United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, its flag, already shown correctly by the board is the Union Flag, sometimes referred to as the Union Jack.England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not countries they are Nations and do not deserve to be treated as countries by this board.
bledd Posted July 20, 2006 Author Posted July 20, 2006 (edited) they're seperate countries!-edit, they're not the same as states anyway Edited July 20, 2006 by bledd
Yzöwl Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 they're seperate countries!Wales unified with England 570 years ago, (by now you'd think people would have come to terms with it).Scotland further unified with them, forming Great Britain, some 311 years later but still 259 years ago.Irelands unification 205 years ago, was later broken down some 85 years ago, but the country as named United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has been fully adopted since 1927, that is 79 years.England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are Nations. The differences /similarities between 'cultural' and 'state' nationalism are too wide to cover, however, for the purposes of your query the 'Nation' of Wales can be treated similarly to a 'State'.It still remains that the Union Flag is your 'countries flag', your 'national flag', Y Ddraig Goch (the red dragon), was officially recognised as such in the 1950s, over 50 years ago.
bledd Posted July 21, 2006 Author Posted July 21, 2006 maybebut all our countries are allowed to enter the world cup as seperate nations, ie having wales, england, northen ireland and scotland compete as seperate teams is allowed, wheras the usa compete as one teami just want a dragon flag tbh
Tomcat76 Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 @YzöwlThis is out of my territory, but shouldn't the "higher bodies" be the judge of that?If I understand this article correctly, Northern Ireland and the three entities that make up Great Britain are allowed to refer to themselves as "countries". The lack of associated citizenship doesn't change that, and the Prime Minister's web site and the Office for National Statistics' Glossary are speaking of "four countries" as well.As a side note... A lot of continental people still view "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" as a left over from the Commonwealth days. Ironically, those same people get confused when they come to a web site where they need to select a language and are presented the flag of England (among others); they think it's the page where they can get medical treatment... . I fell for it too a couple of years ago as this wasn't taught to us in school.
