Copying files to a new server (re: permissions)

Featured Replies

I am replacing about a half-dozen file servers in my various offices. Each user has a Home folder, plus there is a Common folder with various sub-folders (with all kinds of different permissions).

When I physically copy all of the data to the new server, is there any way to carry over all of the security settings? It's set by a combination of domain users and groups.

xcopy /O :)

The /O switch copies all ACL and ownership info. Add other switches as necessary.

Think you can also do this with robocopy out of the resource kit.

For server based operations I would recommend robocopy (free from Microsoft), it is really awesome error-prone utility...
