Old NEC Laptop

Hey guys,

I've had an old NEC laptop lying around for the past few months now... Everything works but the battery, but that's OK. I was wondering what I should use it for since it has a processor between 160MHz and 233MHz (can't remember) and about 32MB of RAM. I have a web server and an FTP server already, so I don't really need any more of them. The only OS I've had it run is Windows 98. It refuses to boot the CD of any other newer version of Windows (nLited or not).

I'm thinking of putting Linux on it and using it as some kind of server. You guys have any suggestions for it? :}

Anything is appreciated! :D

I'm not sure if a laptop that old would have an ethernet port (or two for that matter) but you might be able to set it up as a SmoothWall firewall.

If all else fails, you might be able to find a cheap PCMCIA ethernet card to add that in.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that... I do have a PCMCIA ethernet card for it! ;)

I don't really want another firewall... :}

What kind of firewall are you running right now? With Smoothwall, you'll never need a software firewall or anything else running. That laptop could save you and your family some resources on the rest of your computers...

I'm running exactly that! :P That's why I said I don't need another one! ;)

OK, I just took it out and it seems that the HD is 1.34GB, there IS 32MB of RAM, and it looks like the processor is 150MHz... :}

It won't boot any Windows 2000 CDs or Windows XP CDs that I have... It always gives me "CDBOOT: Cannot find NTLDR", but I know the CDs are perfectly fine. :}

It has one of those swappable CD-ROM and Floppy drives and has two PCMCIA slots and 2 IR ports! ;)

I guess there are a few things you could try doing with it. You could:

Use it as a picture frame thing

Use it in a vegetable-oil-cooling test

Use it as a hat

Use it as a horse-cleaner

Use it as a coffee dispenser

Use it as a dictatorship sitter

Use it as a banana obfuscator

Use it as a lamp

Use it as a sibling

Use it as a timed can-opener

Use it as a rotary internal combustion engine house

Use it as a fly-swatter

Use it as a mailman pincher

Use it as a nose sweeper

Use it as a stock market

Use it as a fish-jumper

Use it as a snow cone

Use it as a traffic jam

Use it as a having

Use it as a tree-sniffer

Use it as a cesium purifier

Use it as a song eater

Use it as a treatise on punctuation

Use it as a classical poet

Use it as a rice-cooker

Use it as a Christmas tree

Use it as a mini-chef

Use it as a sponge critic

Use it as a doom house

etc.

Cheers
