WinXP installation from HD

try copying the identification files (WIN51, WIN51IA,...) to the root of your hard drive.

That would be a hard thing to do, since I want a clean install on my primary NTFS formatted partition.

Can you tell me the reason why you wanna go this way?

Is it coz you have a laptop with no CD/DVD drive and/or no PXE utility?

I'm trying to do the same thing with Vista. However, I've never tried to install XP from a HD either. My basic thought... I have a 40 internal drive on my laptop, no DVD drive. The drive is partitioned at 10gb/30gb, I figured there must be a way to copy the installations files to C:\ (10gb) and install Vista/XP via that drive to D:\ (30gb). May be a pipe dream, but if at all possible I'd like to know how. I've read in other places to copy the i386 folder to C:\ and use a Win98 boot disk to intialize the install to D:\, but not sure. Any ideas would be great. TIA

i think it is the setup files...most probably it is corrupt or not present.. you have to copy all files.. not the i386 directory only.....
