well the deference is more speed, if its ddr,, it breaks up the rate more efficently to produce speds that normal, sdram cant handle..

for an example,

a very good ddr stick has the ability to even be pushed to limits above 500 mhz

and sdram is just a single flow of data..

ddr means double the rate

and alot of tweakers and pcs will probably even start using the DDR2 tech because it has the ability to go all the way up to speeds as high as 1000mhz

heres some imfo for you on ddr rating

http://www.cluboverclocker.com/guides/memory_rating/

and to see what your mobo will handle youll have to check out the handbook of your mobo, and if you dont have that find out the brand and model number then take that to th manufacturers site,, they usually have the mobo specs and manuallys for download at there sites

hope this helps

No difference. Buying two identical modules effectively gives you a dual kit. I have noticed some retailers will price gouge customers on the retail packaged dual kits...becareful and compare prices.

how can i find out if my mobo can support dual channel?

Socket 754 is single channel, socket 939/940 are dual channel.

err i have Socket A, so old =(. and i tried searching my mobo model but couldnt find it. this is my mobo brand and model type

Biostar M7VIG (Pro) (3 PCI, 1 AGP, 1 CNR, 2 SDR DIMM, 2 DDR DIMM, Audio, Video)

Motherboard ID: 06/19/2003-KM266-8235-6A6LVB0GC-00

there 2 maybe 3 generations after your mobo who dont know nothing about dual channel.

so , forget that . just buy good memories .

dual channel means , if you have 2 banks with 1 or 2 slots each

(2 or 4 slots, generally with different colors per banks , never three slots )

if you put two memories , one in each bank ,

IF the mobo knew , at the same time , the processor can write

in one memory and read from other . no 2 reads no 2 writes same time.

this help programs with many arithmetic calculations.

dual channell kit : some vendors (maybe manufacturers ) said

that you have supplimentary reasons to buy them products .

if you have an 486 PC , same thing is recommended , if you need

to put 2 memories , is good to be identical . so ... just extra money for

others.

so by getting 2 sticks of DDR ram, you mean like buying 2 of This? or This?

no your mobo cant handle that speed your specs are

• Memory:

2 x 184-pin DDR DIMM

2 x 168-pin SDRAM DIMM

Maximum 2.0 GB

PC133 / DDR266

so that stats that your max mem stick can be between pc133/ddr266

and your asking about sticks that are DDR 333 (PC 2700) thats alittle too high for your pc to handle better try to stick to no higher than the pc2100 range

hmm, thats wierd, it must not be my EXACT mobo since i just checked what speed my current ram stick is and its DDR333 (PC2700).

EDIT: but then again my ram stick is supposed to be 256mb but XP reads it only as 224mb which is really wierd =/

DDR 400/333 will run at DDR 266 speeds just fine.

That motherboard has onboard video which uses system RAM. 32MB of it in your case, which is why XP is saying you have 224. The chipset that board uses doesnt have a dual channel memory controller either, not that it is really a big deal on an AXP board anyway.

so could i pick a ram stick that is DDR 400 (PC3200)? and it will still work fine?

yes , buy a good one , like i said .

it need a pair of memories only for dual chanell . not your case.

so , the best is to buy the capacity you need in one piece replacing old memory .

DDR333..400..500 are just faster memories . will work ok

on your 266MHz mobo , except the case you want to keep the old memory(ies) , case when nobody can predict how can understand eacheather the old and new memories.
