MDGx Posted June 27, 2006 Author Posted June 27, 2006 KRH:Most monitors need only INF files to install drivers, in fact most of these drivers are fake, not actual files.Majority of monitors are automatically detected [PnP] and install ok from within Windows INF files, which are already installed into %windir%\INF [usually C:\WINDOWS\INF] by Windows setup. These files are:MONITOR.INFMONITOR2.INFMONITOR3.INFMONITOR4.INFMONITOR6.INFMONITOR7.INFMONITR10.INFMONITR11.INFBut depending on what monitor [type/make/model, CRT, LCD, plasma etc] you have, you may need a specific driver [and/or INF file] from your monitor manufacturer/vendor/developer.Check their web site(s) for details. Also, please keep in mind that some system files installed by 98SE2ME [like USER32.DLL + USER.EXE] may not be compatible with stand by/resume ACPI/APM power saving features. These BUGs + their FIXes are all detailed in READ1ST.TXT:READ1ST.TXTunder the "KNOWN BUGS + FIXES" section.Basically you need to (re)install USER32.DLL + USER.EXE 4.10.2231 from Win98 SE hotfix [English]:http://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/CPatch/msupdate/.../291362usa8.exeWhen prompted to overwrite newer files [the ones from WinME = 4.90.3001], answer Yes , and then reboot.Win98 SE USER*.* files are also installed by Gape's SP2:http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.htmlHTH
PROBLEMCHYLD Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 (edited) I've been unable to get power management to work on this computer with Win98SE2ME installed although I've had no problem on two other computers and power management works fine on this one without Win98SE2ME. I have a feeling that if I could find an ME driver for for my monitor, it might work. Can anyone tell me how I might locate and extract a driver for my monitor from my ME setup disks?power management works on my sister computerbut she have this past January version of 98SE2ME i haven't seen her in a while to update it to June versionbut it used to work on my computer too up until now even without a monitor driver maybe it just a baby bugI don't use power management anymore i used a VBs timer script to shutdown my computer.power management is still a nice function 2 use Edited June 28, 2006 by PROBLEMCHYLD
Hu$tle Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Is it possible to change the Batch output to like a more uniqueUI don't get me wrong i love your work but you r playin in the big leagues nowand i think a nice UI wouldn't hurt it a bit.
jimmsta Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 I find 98SE2Me to be user-firendly enough. It's not intended for the majority of users, just the advanced power user that isn't worried about screwing up their system... Console apps own.
Hu$tle Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Its nothing wrong with it or anything i just thought a lil enhancement would be nice.I have to agree it does it jobno matter what UI output it has i guess thats what matters the most.
MDGx Posted July 11, 2006 Author Posted July 11, 2006 Is it possible to change the Batch output to like a more unique UIdon't get me wrong i love your work but you r playin in the big leagues nowand i think a nice UI wouldn't hurt it a bit. Thanks for your suggestion.I've thought of switching to another ["prettier"] UI, but that would add to the size of the installer, and would require complete overhaul of some of the scripts, which are entirely based on BATch scripting right now.Maybe sometime in the future...
Hu$tle Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Can you consider this in 98SE2ME?http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&...st&p=531455
MDGx Posted July 11, 2006 Author Posted July 11, 2006 Can you consider this in 98SE2ME?http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&...st&p=53145598SE2ME.EXE installer already uses LZMA compression [7-zip 7Z format] which in turn is used by Inno Setup, the setup installer I use to pack 98SE2ME with:* 98SE2ME.EXE is a self install + uninstall executable compiled using InnoSetup Installer [freeware]:http://www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.phpwhich uses 7-Zip [free GPL]:http://www.7-zip.org/7Z format [LZMA algorithm] with highest compression ratio, attainable only byACE/CAB/RAR/UHARC archiving formats.See INNOFILE.TXT (included) for more details.Quoted from 98SE2ME READ1ST.TXT, the "UNINSTALL 98SE2ME" section:READ1ST.TXTIs this what you were referring to, or did you mean to backup the original 98SE files replaced by option 1 + 2 in CAB format instead of just copying them to other directories? Please note that the files backed up by 98SE2ME options 1 + 2 take only ~ 24-30 MB, depending on which files are present on your HD at the time of the backup.Full OS backup, on the other hand, takes the same amount [basically doubles the HD space occupied by your OS, since this is an identical copy of your original 98SE OS] of disk space 98SE already takes on your HD [405 MB in my case, and I have "trimmed" a lot of files + folders].Average 98SE OS [entire %windir% + subdirectories + all files contained in them] takes ~ 500 MB or more.To compress in CAB or ZIP format the files replaced [24-30 MB uncompressed] doesn't take too long to process [even on slower CPUs], but to compress the entire OS into a CAB or ZIP, takes a very long time, even on fast CPUs.Please keep in mind that smaller the size of the archive file would be, the slower the compression process would be.If you wish to compress your entire OS copy, you could use WinZip, PowerArchiver, PKZIP, 7-zip [7za.exe is the comand line tool which can be used in batch files], etc:http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#ZIPNote that zipfldr.dll only extracts files from CABs, cannot create CABs.To create cabs, you need either iexpress.exe [free from M$]:http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#INFor similar 3rd party tool, like PowerArchiver [shareware].Examples:- M$ CAB SDK [contains iexpress.exe + makecab.exe, free, command line tools]:http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310618- CabPack [freeware, large file size, GUI only tool]:http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/english.htm- MsCab plugin for Total Commander [you must have Total Commander to use MsCab, free]:http://www.mscab.prv.pl/Besides, I would have to add a CAB or ZIP command line tool to 98SE2ME, and some are not free(ware), and these tools will also add to the file size. For example:- MAKECAB.EXE [150 KB] = large file size [free from M$, can be used].- 7ZA.EXE file [466 KB] = huge file size [free GPL, can be used].- PKZIP.EXE [51 KB] = small file size [shareware, cannot be used in packages like 98SE2ME because of its license].And among other things, I'm trying to keep 98SE2ME.EXE file size to a minimum [2.67 MB as of 6-1-2006], because some people still connect to the internet using dial-up/analog/56k modems, and 98SE2ME is targeted to everybody, not only to high speed broadband or fast CPU users.HTH
MDGx Posted July 11, 2006 Author Posted July 11, 2006 Thanks I love the abilities of this!If you are referring to Ryan's WM and/or WPI, please note that this is the *wrong* forum. This forum's title is "98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE", because deals strictly with 98SE2ME [Windows 98 SE and ME OSes] and related topics. Please post any comments you may have about Windows NTx OSes, NT4, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, etc, 32 or 64 bit and/or related tools/tweaks/scripts/etc into the appropriate MSFN forums:http://www.msfn.org/board/or:http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=95HTH

PROBLEMCHYLD Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 (edited) RSRCMTR.EXEdoesn't copy to C:\Windows or to any directory at all.http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&...st&p=532844 Edited July 17, 2006 by PROBLEMCHYLD
MDGx Posted July 18, 2006 Author Posted July 18, 2006 (edited) RSRCMTR.EXEdoesn't copy to C:\Windows or to any directory at all.http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&...st&p=532844RSRCMTR.EXE is extracted from WinME setup CAB and copied to %windir% only if another RSRCMTR.EXE file is already present in %windir%.Otherwise RSRCMTR.EXE is not copied anywhere.I did this [please see related C:\9!M\E0!X.BAT lines = open it in Notepad] because some people [myself included ] either moved RSRCMTR.EXE from %windir% somewhere else or deleted it.Thanks for the MM clarification.I haven't had time to test it anyway. I got your PM with the hex code to patch shell32.dll in order for MM to work.I'll do this [eventually] in the near future.I also need a tool [do you know any?] to create that patch and then apply it to the original file.I presume shell32.dll must be the one from WinME setup CD.Or I could use [probably, did no test] the hexed versions of MM by X-max, which are part of his 98SE Upgrade pack:http://www.bpa23.host.sk/wupg.htmlThanks. pjmelect Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 I have just installed 98se2me option 1 on my system and everything appears to work ok (I enjoy playing Spider solitaire on a windows 98SE system) however one small problem I now have is that Windows now no longer shuts down. I have tried reinstalling SP2a as described in the FAQ but it has had no effect. Suggestions please?
