Free Upgrade to Windows XP Professional x64 Editio

Recommended Posts

Why do we have to read stoooopid posts?

If you trade up to x64 you loose your XP 32-bit license. That is the way it is. Why do you pay for shipping? Because you do. Don't like it? Don't use it then, move to Linux or better yet, unplug your computer.

The Technology Advancement Program

By participating in this program, your 32-bit version of Windows® XP Professional will no longer be licensed.

Source

My point was if you read the documentation, it spells out exactly what happens when you upgrade from 32-bit XP Pro to 64-bit XP Pro x64. "will no longer be licensed" seems pretty clear to me. We'll let you move to a newer operating system but there is a catch. You give up one for the other. Simple...

Microsoft has never charged for Service Packs or Hot-fixes. They have charged a nominal shipping fee for various programs like the Corporate Preview Program for Windows 2003 Serverand the Technology Advancement Program which is what we are talking about here. This is nothing new with Microsoft.

The Technology Advancement Program in a nutshell.

In order to be eligible to receive Windows® XP Professional x64 Edition, your computer must have been ordered between March 31, 2003 and July 31, 2005 with Microsoft Windows® XP Pro (32 Bit) preinstalled.

In addition, you must read and agree to the following:

By participating in this program, your 32-bit version of Windows® XP Professional will no longer be licensed.

The installation of Windows® XP Professional x64 Edition requires you to format your hard drive. You must back up your files and settings prior to the installation or they will be erased. Microsoft is not liable for any loss of data as a result of this installation.

Windows® XP Professional x64 Edition requires 64-bit hardware drivers (32-bit drivers are not supported). Drivers for 64-bit Windows are created at the discretion of hardware manufacturers and may not be available for some of your hardware components.

For the purposes of the End User License Agreement for your existing Windows® XP Pro (32 Bit) software, your installation of this software will be an “Upgrade.”

The installation of Windows® XP Professional x64 Editions will void any support with your PC manufacturer.

One free support call will be provided by Microsoft for any installation-related issues. Additional calls to Microsoft support will be available on a pay-per-incident basis.

Cost for shipping and handling of upgrade is $12.00 USD for domestic shipments and $22.00 USD for International shipments plus any applicable taxes.

I understand and agree to the above statements

I do not agree nor accept the above statements

The choice is yours...

Microsoft spells it out pretty clear in the above statement of conditions. If you want to participate in the program, you acknowledge those conditions and agree to them to participate. Don't like the any of the conditions, then it is very simple... don't participate in the program.

My three upgrades to XP Pro x64 and Windows 2003 Server x64 cost me a total of $39.15 in shipping fees. That tiny fee is a hell of a lot cheaper than going out and purchasing new systems with x64 preinstalled. x64 is not available on retail shelves. There won't be any retail SKU for either of the x64 products.

Your choices are simple. Upgrade through the program or purchase a new system with x64 installed.

Any questions???

I just got a few questions.

What exactly does it mean to no longer be licensed? Does this mean I can no longer install and use my xp pro on any pc ever again? I have to buy another copy of xp pro if I want to go back to regular xp pro? Does it mean I can just no longer use my current key?

Do I receive it on disc from the mail? Or do I just install it on my hard drive? What happens if I want to upgrade or my hard drive crashes or gets a virus?

Is it backwards compatible with 32 bit applications? I mean by this that I just like to play a lot of games and will my 32 bit games be able to install and run on the x64 windows?

It says it an “upgrade”, what exactly is meant by this? Do I install my xp pro then use the x64 installed on top of this on disc or from download?

What is meant by “ordered”? A premanufactured PC by various companies like dell? I custom built my pc and I am getting my nForce 4 board next week. Will I have to submit receipts of my purchase?

Thanks in advance.

Following in the long MS tradition. One CD, one install on one machine.

If you sign up for the upgrade to x64 you agree not to use your 32-bit copy of XP on another machine.

So if you install XP Pro x64 and you don't like it. Reinstall your copy of 32-bit XP Pro. Pretty simple to me.

Why would MS charge you for a download? They have never charged for downloads. Shipping and handling means they (MS) ships it to you via the mail or other international package carrier. If you have a CD in your hands you use it just like any other operating system CD. Stick it in you CD ROM drive and boot from it.

I run MS Office 2003 Professional (32-bit) with no problems on top of XP Pro x64.

Will any 32-bit game run on x64? I have no idea. There are lists around the web on what does install and runs on x64. You will have to do your homework or find out by trial and error.

It says it an “upgrade”, what exactly is meant by this? Do I install my xp pro then use the x64 installed on top of this on disc or from download?

It is not an upgrade in the traditional sense. It is a new product and requires a "clean install." It will not install over XP Pro 32-bit. You also agreee not to "dual-boot" it as well. The only version that you can download is the x64 trial version. It is timebombed and will expire at some point in the future.

What is meant by “ordered”? A premanufactured PC by various companies like dell? I custom built my pc and I am getting my nForce 4 board next week. Will I have to submit receipts of my purchase?

OEM means built by a company like Dell or you local white box builder. Is your copy of XP Pro legit? Did you purchase an OEM copy of XP Pro or Retail? You are allowed to upgrade either version.

Does it ask for or infer anywhere in the conditions about verifying with recepits? So, the answer is no.

Are you sure about that?

I thought once your trade your 32bit for 64bit license that microsoft will give you a 64bit license and invalidate the 32bit license. So, you probably could install 32bit but you wouldn't be able to activate it and after 30 days (i think) you would no longer be able to use it due to the activation grace period.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.
