gamehead200 Posted April 14, 2005 Posted April 14, 2005 OK, whenever I start my computer in the morning, I hear this grinding noise that stops a few minutes later... I'm pretty sure its not the CD-ROM/RW drives or any of my fans... It sounds like my HD, yet it still works... Could it be something in my HD or PSU? Whenever I wake up, my computer also wakes up (mobo setting to Auto-Start at 7AM) and makes this noise... Its starting to get annoying... Any guesses?
glent Posted April 14, 2005 Posted April 14, 2005 My Hitachi desktar 160 started soemthing similar two weeks ago..more like a "slapping" noise which was most likely the needle inside the drive...every few minutes until I was unable to boot and lost all my files ....backup up now
gamehead200 Posted April 14, 2005 Author Posted April 14, 2005 Its been going on for AGES and nothing has happened... No slowdowns or anything... When I go to one of my LAN parties tomorrow, I'm going to put my ear next to my computer to see where exactly the sound is coming from...
Tarun Posted April 14, 2005 Posted April 14, 2005 Pop the case open. If you suspect it is the hard drive unplug the power supply cord from the hard drive and then power up your machine, listening for the sound. This will help to narrow down the source for you. Let me know if this helps.
gamehead200 Posted April 14, 2005 Author Posted April 14, 2005 I'll do it tomorrow as it is a pain to unplug everything and replug everything in the back of my unit. I have about a foot of room to squeeze my arm and plug everything in the back!
XPerties Posted April 14, 2005 Posted April 14, 2005 My wife pc does this and it took me a few times to figure out that it was the fan on the vid card.It just might be the fans (bearings suck in a lot of fans) but hope for your sake it's not the HD.
nateklomp Posted April 15, 2005 Posted April 15, 2005 Hiya,I've seen (heard, rather) something like this several times before, in those cases the noises were symptoms of dying PSUs...although it's entirely possible your HDD is on its way out. Is it an Hitachi/IBM? They're known for bearing problems, which lead to premature failure. You may want to check it out, especially be sure your PSU fan hasn't crapped out (wanna see your PC catch fire?).Good Luck!
gamehead200 Posted April 15, 2005 Author Posted April 15, 2005 I'm going to check my PSU later on during the day... My PC went on this morning without making that noise...I have an 80GB Maxtor...
amw_drizz Posted April 15, 2005 Posted April 15, 2005 That is never good unless your comp is in a nice and cold room... that means that the psu fan is dead more or less.My moms computer did that. made this awful grinding noise at boot some times while it was on and then you started smelling burning silicon. the reason why it stops is that the fan is probaly dead(stopped) while your comp is on put your hand behind the fan on the psu and see if any air is being moved quickly. if it fells like a small breeze your fan is probally dead. as what ever air compresion you have in your case is pusshing out that hole. If your computer is in a cool enough room you can opererate your pc with the psu fan. look at my server. the fan in it died ages ago and its still running with out problems. short replace psu they are cheap enough. rosewill value serise 400w cost about $25 on new egg. got that for my comp from a 250w to 400w and gave my mom my 250w as a replacement for her dead psu.
gamehead200 Posted April 15, 2005 Author Posted April 15, 2005 Yup... Its the PSU... **** fan...
