Just revisiting this thread to see if anyone has found a way to move the location of the Norton Antivirus 2005 updates off the C drive.

I am particularly refering to the following parts.

C:/Program Files/Symantec

C:/Program Files/Common Files/Symantec Shared

I just noticed you are running Norton's...the Protected Recycle Bin can grow to astronomical proportions.

Check there as well.

Would there be a registry hack for making Norton move this folder?

I have already changed the default location to the D:/Program Files.

just delete the norton protected files. i think u can also disable that protection.

First, Set the paging file to be on d: It will help you control things.

The c: drive should never be more than 1 gig in my opinion. Mine is 550 meg.

That way it keep windows clean and fast.

My pagefile.sys was almost 800mb on its own!

You wouldnt happen to have a list or make a list of all the stuff i can move off the C drive??

I just like to keep it lean and fast!

As a non-exhaustive list :

page file (preferrably on a different physical drive, for performance reasons)

'my documents' Infact the whole user profile from documents and settings can be moved I believe (search for it).

temp files (go to System Properties -> advanced -> environment variables, and change the 'TEMP' and 'TMP' variables in both the user and system areas to point to another drive. Note you will probably have to change the user setting for each individual user you have) Once you have done this and rebooted you can clean out the original directories (in windows\temp and in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp)

Temporary Internet Files (IE) IE -> tools -> Internet Options -> Settings. Change the path here to somewhere else.

Of course, use nlite to cut down the size in the first place!

Other Points : remove all the *.pnf files (NOT .INF!) from the windows\inf directory - these mount up after a while, they are recreated as required.

I am sure there are more that others can add to this. Personally, I would like to find a way to change the default uninstall location for Windows Update (when using the website I mean) to something other than the windows directory.

After a rebuild today, using my nlite and slipstreamed XPpro sp2 disc, i am at 820mb for my OS,

I will report back again with the size after all the XP updates

Is system restore turned on? That can also burn a lot of space.

Yes it is, but i dont know if i can move this to another drive (partition)

No you can't. Each volume has its own restore data. What you can do though is go into system restore & delete old restore points or do it from a file manager like TotalCommander. It will free up a whole lot of space.

By default I keep My documents folder on d drive. I regfularly backup OE & Outlook data to d:\backup.

I have no worries. & don't need/use "system restore" at all.
